What do you plan to do in your retirement? Tom Brown—an engineer who grew up in rural North Carolina discovered unexpectedly his retirement passion project in 1998 at a farmer’s market. Brown was introduced to several heritage apples—varieties of the fruit which were standardized in the 18th and 19th centuries. For the past 20 years, he has devoted his time and efforts to hunting down rare and lost heritage apples across the east coast.

The number of apple types has likely numbered over 14,000 across the United States by 1905. At that time, food production and consumption was more localized than the international produce market of today. Some of the richest variety in apples was found along the east coast, particularly in the rural south. Many small farms boasted apple trees.

The consumer and technological shifts of the 20th century reduced American apple offerings. Orchards (果园) were abandoned, destroyed, or lost to growing forest. As a result, thousands of varieties seemingly disappeared from the palate (味觉) of the nation. Brown refers to these varieties as “Lost Heritage Apples,” apples which have not been documented or clearly known since about 1930.

Brown began his website Apple Search in search of these lost pieces of culinary (食物的) history. He spends much of his time driving around, literally knocking on doors and talking about apples. At times, Brown heads off for an old orchard mentioned in historical records. Other times, he follows the word of mouth as people whisper of apple trees they knew in their youth.

When Brown finds a variety of apple, he often donates cuttings to heritage apple orchards. While it may seem like a never-ending task to track down these trees, Brown says, “It is exciting for me to look for rare apple varieties knowing that I am helping restore the agricultural heritage of our country. It feels wrong to just let them die and be lost forever.”

    4. What probably caused the disappearance of some apple types in America?

    A. Change of climate. B. Development of times.

    C. Expansion of forests. D. Decrease of consumers.

    5. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

    A. Brown’s efforts to build his website.

    B. Brown’s interest in talking about apples.

    C. Brown’s curiosity about the history of orchards.

    D. Brown’s struggle to look for the missing apple species.

    6. Which of the following can best describe Tom Brown?

    A. Faithful and humorous. B. Optimistic and modest.

    C. Responsible and determined. D. Hard-working and considerate.

    7. What is a suitable title for the text?

    A. The Apple Hunter B. The Rare Apple Species

    C. The Apple Dealer D. The Lost Heritage Apples

In a global report of lake color, researchers estimate that roughly one-third of Earth’s lakes are blue. But, should average summer air temperatures rise by a few degrees, some of those clear waters could turn a cloudy green or brown, the Learn reports in the Sept. 28 Geophysical Research Letters.

The changing colors could change how people use those waters and offer clues about the stability of lake ecosystems. Compared with blue lakes, green or brown lakes have more algae (藻类) and organic matter, says Xiao Yang, a hydrologist (水文专家) at Southern Methodist University.

Lakes in places with average summer air temperatures that were below 19° Celsius were more likely to be blue than lakes with warmer summers. That’s because warmer water helps algae bloom more, which changes the properties of the water.

Yang and colleagues used satellite photos from 2013 to 2020 to analyze the color of more than 85,000 lakes around the world. Because storms and seasons can temporarily affect a lake’s color, the researchers focused on the most frequent color observed for each lake over the seven-year period. The researchers also created an interactive online map that can be used to explore the colors of these lakes. The approach is “super cool,” the researchers say. These satellite data are “just so powerful.”

If some lakes do become less blue, people will probably lose some of the resources they have come to value, O’Reilly says, who is an ecologist at Illinois State University. Lakes are often used for drinking water, food or recreation. If the water has more algae, it could be unappealing for play or more costly to clean for drinking. But the color changes wouldn’t necessarily mean that the lakes are any less healthy. “Humans don’t value lots of algae in a lake, but if you’re a certain type of fish species, you might be like ‘this is great’” O’Reilly says.

    8. What can we learn about the lakes’ color change according to the text?

    A. It is caused by water pollution. B. It does harm to the growth of algae.

    C. It results from the temperature increase. D. It can disturb the stability of lake ecosystems.

    9. How was the research conducted?

    A. By doing field investigation. B. By researching previous studies.

    C. By analyzing long-term satellite data. D. By observing the daily color of the lakes.

    10. Which word best describes O’Reilly’s attitude to the color change?

    A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Favourable.

    11. What’s the authors purpose in writing the text?

    A. To call on people to protect lakes. B. To introduce a new research method.

    C. To present the outcome of a research. D. To provide solutions to lakes’ color change.

    D

Cancer is caused by gene mutations (突变) that accumulate in cells over time, yet long-lived animals that have lots of cells, such as elephants and whales, hardly ever get it. Why?

For elephants, at least, part of the answer may be the gene commonly known as p53, which also helps humans and many other animals repair DNA damaged during replication (复制). Elephants have an amazing 20 copies of this gene. Those copies, each with two variations produce a total of 40 proteins, compared with humans’ (and most animals’) single copy producing two proteins.

In mammals, p53 plays a crucial role in preventing mutated cells from turning into tumors (肿瘤). It works by pausing replication and then either initiating repair or causing cells to self-destruct if the damage is too extensive. Without action from p53, cancer can easily take hold: in more than half of all human cancers, the gene’s function has been lost through random mutations.

The scientists virtually modeled and studied carefully elephants’ 40 p53 proteins, finding two ways the gene could help elephants avoid cancer. First, the fact that elephants possess multiple copies lowers the chance of p53 no longer working because of mutations. Additionally, elephants’ p53 copies activate in response to varying mutations and so respond to damaged cells differently, which likely gives an edge when detecting and getting rid of mutations.

These “remarkable” results imply that elephants have a series of means though which p53 can operate, says Sue Haupt, a cell biologist who was not involved in the work. This points to “exciting possibilities for exploring powerful new approaches to cancer protection in humans,” she adds.

Study co-author Robin Fahraeus and his colleagues are now following up on these results using blood samples from an African elephant at the Vienna Zoo. They are exploring how its p53 proteins interact with damaged cells and plan to compare those findings with results from human cells.

    12. What does the underlined word “initiating” mean in paragraph 3?

    A. Delaying. B. Indicating.

    C. Stopping. D. Starting.

    13. How do p53 copies free elephants from cancer?

    A. By preventing the replication thoroughly.

    B. By providing precise response continuously.

    C. By lowering the chance of mutations in advance.

    D. By repairing the damaged cells in the same way.

    14. What can we conclude from the last 2 paragraphs?

    A. The results need further tests.

    B. More biologists will participate in the study.

    C. The results throw light on humans’ fighting cancer.

    D. Researchers have new findings in African elephants.

    15. What is the text mainly about?

    A. Why elephants don’t get cancer.

    B. What contributes to elephants’ long life.

    C. Where the anticancer breakthrough lies.

    D. How the key cancer-fighting gene works.

After, all your sleuthing (侦查), you come to the conclusion that you have found some fake news. ____19____ If it is a post or message from someone you know, you can reach out to them and let them know it’s not entirely accurate. It’s better to do this by politely messaging them privately rather than leaving a public comment if it’s a post on social media.

Studies suggest that fake news spreads faster than real news. ____20____

    A. Don’t share it.

    B. Fake news is not new.

    C. Delete it immediately.

Henry was a college student at UC Santa Cruz. For years, he had been saving up to buy a decent used car. He had a part-time job at a local coffee shop. He repainted a room in his neighbor’s house in his free time. He had an internship (实习) at a software company. He saved a lot: Christmas money, birthday money, a penny here, a penny there.

While Henry worked to buy a car, Hua Kuan had a car to sell. Kuan was born and lived in Mexico for about 13 years. His parents had immigrated there from China.

In Mexico, he didn’t really grow up in a very nice area. He had to work when he was young, a lot of restaurant work—cleaning dishes, bussing tables.

Kuan’s family headed north to California in the late 1990s. A few years later, he was awarded a full scholarship to UC Berkeley. During Kuan’s junior year, his proud parents bought him a first car.

Kuan’s parents were blue-collar workers, and worked very hard for their money. They bought the car for their son, which was the only gift they were able to provide for him. And Kuan had been driving that car since it was brand new for about 14 years.

However, Kuan is a 35-year-old dentist now. His friends convinced him to upgrade his ride, so he listed his beloved car for sale on Craigslist. By chance, Henry saw the ad for the black car with gold wheels and over 150,000 miles. However, it was priced at $7000. He fell in love with the car the first time he saw it, and thought it just might be the one. Although it was a little bit over his budget, he determined to take a chance.

Besides, some volunteers selected from the students told their stories about being health. Finally, the headmaster delivered a meaningful lecture, which made a profound effect on students.

    第二节(满分25)

    52题答案】

【答案】    So last Saturday, he headed north to meet Kuan. Upon arrival, he told Kuan immediately what his aim was. He convinced Kuan that he had been working hard to save money to buy his own right car. However, it was still somewhat short to afford the car he had advertised. Seeing the honest boy, Kuan thought about his teen times and his parents’ struggling to raise the family. He agreed to give the boy a good bargain and received the envelop containing money.(74)
Kuan took a thousand dollars out of the envelope and handed it back. He informed Henry that he was greatly touched by his honesty and his efforts to achieve his goal. Meanwhile, he told Henry only work hard and stick to his dream can he benefit and fulfill his ambition. So the efforts Henry made beforehand worth the rest of the price and he just took a thousand dollars. Hearing the sayings, Henry was grateful, thanked Kuan and drove his own “new car” back happily.(72)
