Integrated skills

I. Teaching aims and learning objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. master the important new words and phrases;

2. obtain the information of the changes in Starlight town from listening;

3. complete the diary entry about Starlight Town by using the information from the listening;

4. talk about past and present about their friends and themselves.

II. Teaching contents

1. New words and phrases: environment, condition, return, last, abroad, primary, communicate, communication, exactly, transport, go abroad, keep in touch with, primary school

2. New structures: The internet makes communication much easier.

III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty

1. Obtain the key information from listening.

2. Talk about past and present about students’ friends and themselves.

IV. Teaching procedures

A  Changes in Starlight Town

Step 1 Lead-in

1. Free talk

Ask questions about Mr Chen and changes in Sunshine town.

T: Do you still remember Mr Chen? Where does he live? What changes happened there?

【设计意图：通过复习阳光镇的变化，激活学生已有知识，并通过这些已有知识引出新知，将学生带入课堂的话题情境中。】

Step 2 Pre-listening

1. Look and say

T: Today we will learn another town called Starlight Town. Let’s see what it was like in the past and what it is like at present.

T: What can you see in the picture?

【设计意图：通过看图引导学生说出birds、houses、trees、green hills、river/lake，建构听前知识框架。】

2. Read and guess

Read Part A1and Part A2, and try to make a guess. We may guess the answers to blanks 4 and 5.

【设计意图：让学生通过阅读图片和已有信息做听前猜测，这有助于他们快速捕捉信息。】

3. Listening tips

Learn the tips of catching the key words as quickly as possible.

【设计意图：告诉学生记录信息时可以只记首字母，听完后再写出完整单词，并根据上下文和句子结构等判断词性和词形。】

Step 3 While-listening

1. Listen and complete Part A1

  (1) Play the recording for the first time. Remind the students to use the listening tips.

  (2) Play the recording again if necessary.

(3) Students read Part A1 aloud to check answers or choose two students write the answers on the blackboard.

【设计意图：巩固听力策略，关注学生情况以便及时采取有效措施。让学生大声朗读可以培养他们的朗读习惯，在黑板上写出答案可了解学生的实际状况，防止学生拼错单词或遗漏复数词尾变化。】

2. Listen and complete Part A2

(1) Read Part A2 and guess the missing words.

(2) Listen to the recording and fill in the blanks.

Step 4 Post-listening

1. Describe changes in Starlight Town

【设计意图：让学生重新组织语言描述星光镇的过去和现在，实现知识的内化。】

2. Complete the diary entry

3. Complete the table

【设计意图：采用任务型阅读的形式检测学生对文章内容的理解和掌握情况，在强化重点词汇运用能力的同时，也培养了学生信息转换的能力。】

B  Speak up: We haven’t seen each other since then.

Step 1 Presentation

T: Starlight Town has changed a lot. Our lives have also changed. I have a friend called Lily who went abroad ten years ago. We haven’t seen each other for many years. To keep in touch with each other, we often communicate with them on the Internet. I know Lily has two children: her daughter is 18 years and she is studying at high school; her son is 10 years old and he is studying in a Primary school. Do you have any old friends living in different cities? How often do they return to visit you? When did you last see your friend? Do you think the Internet can make communication much easier? I really think so.

【设计意图：通过星光镇的变化自然过渡到我们生活中的变化，教师叙述自己生活中的变化，并询问学生的情况，自然地引出对话中的生词，教师在叙述过程中板书用到的词汇引导学生在语境中辨认和理解词汇。】

Step 2 Listening

Students listen to Speak up and answer the following questions.

(1) Where has Becky just returned from?

(2) When did they last see each other?

(3) How do they keep in touch with each other? And why?

【设计意图：通过问题训练学生在听的过程中获取信息的能力，并帮助学生理解对话的基本含义。】

Step 3 Practice

1. Read the conversation in different ways

(1) Read after the recording.

(2) Read in pairs.

(3) Have a reading competition.

2. Ask and answer

T: Use the words and expressions in the box to ask and answer questions about Millie and Becky.

    Sample questions:

(1) Where did Becky return from?

    (2) When did Millie last see her?

    (3) Why haven’t Becky and Millie seen each other for five years?

    (4) How do they communicate?

【设计意图：为了突出重点知识，在学生通过模仿、分角色朗读掌握了生词读音的基础上，再将重点知识提取出来放在方框中，首先让学生辨认，再通过逐一运用来加深理解。】

3. Make up your own conversation

T: Work in pairs and tell your partner about the changes in your life. You can use the conversation in Part B as a model.

【设计意图：引导学生用听力和对话中学到的知识来谈论实际生活，既实现有效输出也培养学生学以致用的能力。】

V. Homework

1. Find more changes around you.

2. Write down your feeling about the changes.
