Paul O’Sullivan lounged around his Baltimore apartment one evening in 2014,feeling bored. So, like many others, he logged on to Facebook to find out just how many others on the social network shared his name. Moments later, dozens of name twins from around the world filled his screen. On a whim, he decided to send friend requests to them all.

Many of his fellow Paul O’Sullivans ignored him, but a few felt too curious to pass up his invitation. As Baltimore Paul scrolled through the other Paul O’Sullivans’ profiles, he noticed something four of them had in common: They were all musicians. Like Baltimore Paul, Rotterdam Paul sang and played guitar. Another Paul in Manchester, England, played bass. And Paul from Pennsylvania was a drummer. Baltimore Paul had an idea. Wouldn’t it be funny, he asked the other musical Pauls, if they formed a band called The Paul O’Sullivans? Yes, they all agreed,

Starting a band across multiple time zones proved to be tricky. Shaky Wi-Fi and other technical difficulties meant they were often out of sync. And being even half a second off from one another wrecked their sound. To fix this, they created a sort of musical assembly line. Baltimore Paul and Rotterdam Paul wrote and recorded a basic track, then e-mailed it to Manchester Paul.

“I listen to the song over a few days,” says Manchester Paul, to get a feel for what bass arrangement seems most appropriate.“ Once he recorded a bass track, he e-mailed it back to Baltimore Paul, who then built it into the main song. Later, Pennsylvania Paul added the drumbeat. Round and round the track went, with each member adding on his own layer until they achieved the sound they want.

The Paul O’Sullivan Band released its first original song, “Namesake”, in March2016, which was about long-distance relationships. And when COVID-19 slowly shutdown the world, the Pauls didn’t miss a beat. After all, the band had already got the hang of remote work. They used their time during the pandemic to record their first EP.

Titled Internet Famous: A Retrospective, it was released last April.

“What are the odds,” says Baltimore Paul, “that a random Facebook request would lead not only to new music but to lasting friendships as well?” “Some things are just meant to be.”

    24. How can the four Paul O’Sullivans be distinguished?

    A. By the musical instruments they play.

    B. By their e-mail addresses.

    C. By the musical styles they like.

    D. By the place they come from.

    25. What does “this” refer to in paragraph three?

    A. The inaccessibility of Wi-Fi.

    B. The existence of technical barriers.

    C. Their being in different time zones.

    D. Their lack of experience.

    26. What can we infer from the underlined sentence in paragraph five?

    A. The band had to pause because of the pandemic.

    B. They got inspired and composed original songs.

    C. The whole world was badly destroyed by COVID-19.

    D. The band continued to work in spite of the pandemic.

    27. What can be the best title for the article?

    A. Banding Together B. A Random Facebook Request

    C. Long-distance Friendships D. A Pure Coincidence

    C

A new study shows that increases in extreme winter weather in parts of the US are linked to quickened warming of the Arctic.

Over the past four decades, warming in the Arctic has been far more definite than that in the rest of the world and has caused a rapid decrease of summer sea ice. Heating in the Arctic has ultimately disturbed the circular pattern of winds known as the polar vortex (旋涡). As a result, it got stretched out of shape and slid southward off the pole. Scientists believe this vortex stretching process led to the deadly Texas cold wave in February this year.

“The polar vortex over the Arctic usually locks in cold air at the poles and does not easily move south. The stronger the winds, the more the air inside is kept, and the colder it gets,” explained lead researcher Dr. Judah Cohen, who’s a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “Melting ice in the Arctic and rising temperatures can disturb the Arctic vortex, making cold air no longer locked in the Arctic, but move some farther south.” The researchers say that their findings are based on both observations and modelling and they show a physical link between climate change in the Arctic, the stretching of the polar vortex and the impacts on ground.

The researchers believe their work could improve predictions about the beginning of extreme cold winter events. The research team also believes that their findings will help people understand that global warming is complex and perhaps let go of the idea that colder winters mean climate change isn’t happening. “In the past, these cold extremes over the US and Russia have been used to justify not reducing carbon, but there’s no longer any excuse not to start reducing emissions right away,” said Dr. Cohen.

    28. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A. The explanation given by scientists. B. The formation of Texas cold wave.

    C. The decrease of summer sea ice. D. The polar vortex’s being disturbed.

    29. What is the function of polar vortex?

    A. Preventing cold air from escaping. B. Helping cold air move freely.

    C. Accelerating the melting of ice. D. Making the wind stronger.

    30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

    A. Global warming merely causes unnecessary fear.

    B. Weather-gone-wild pattern is a fantasy.

    C. Reducing emissions is a pressing matter.

    D. There’s no longer any excuse not to start reducing emissions.

    31. In which column of a website can the text probably be found?

    A. Entertainment. B. Tourism. C. Education. D. Environment.

    D

A green classroom used to be a classroom whose walls were green. But today’s green classrooms are “greener” than that! New ““green” classrooms help schools save money and provide clean environment where students learn better.

Many classrooms are going green by adding solar panels(太阳能电池板) to their roofs. The solar panels collect energy from the sun and use it to power lights and computers.

The panels help create at least as much electricity(电力) as the classrooms use. They can also cut down the cost of energy.

Many new ““green” classrooms are built by using recycled things.

Green schools have other new ideas. Some classrooms are painted with special paint that helps improve indoor air quality(质量). Some use windows that help keep classrooms warm in cold weather and let in lots of natural daylight. Others no longer use glue that adds chemical(化学的) smells to the air.

Experts(专家) say that green classrooms are good for education. Studies show that the environment with good air can cut colds and flu by more than 50 percent. That means fewer sick days for students and teachers. Studies have also shown that natural light and other green features(特点) improve students’ learning and marks in tests, too.

    32. Solar panels can do the following things EXCEPT ________.

    A. cutting down the cost of energy B. collecting energy from the sun

    C. keeping the classroom cool D. helping create electricity

33 What can be used to make the air in the classrooms better?

    A. Glue. B. Special paint. C. Recycled things. D. Windows.

    34. Which of the following is the advantage(优点) of the green classrooms?

    A. They can make students have fewer sick days.

    B. They can produce natural daylight.

    C. The natural light makes air fresh

    D. They can help students get full marks in tests.

    35. What’s the best title for this passage?

    A. How to Improve Students’ Marks B. Green Classrooms in the Future

    C. How to Use Green Classrooms D. Classrooms Are Going Green

Mason followed his mother to the market as usual. It was a thing he enjoyed because the market was such an exciting place. There was always something interesting to see.

That day, Mason caught sight of a middle-aged man with untidy hair and old clothes. He was a beggar. He held out a wooden bowl and passers-by dropped in coins. Mason’s mother put a small coin into the bowl as she passed him by. His eyes followed the mother and son as they set off for home.

As Mason and his mother turned into the narrow path that led to their house, he suddenly realized that the beggar was following them. Mason told his mother about it. Alarmed, she quickened her steps and as soon as they got inside their house, she locked it. Mason peered out the window and saw the beggar sitting on the ground near the gate. Why did the beggar follow them? Mason wished he knew.

After a couple of hours, Mason’s mother became concerned for the poor beggar. He had not moved from his spot. She gathered up her courage and went to ask the beggar to leave. But the beggar merely looked at her with a gentle smile. Worried that he would fall ill with no food and water, she sent Mason to give him a bowl of rice and vegetables and some tea. The beggar ate and drank. Then he lay down under a tree to sleep.

Mason’s mother was at a loss as to what else to do. She was just a poor woman with a young son. Since the beggar refused to leave, she and Mason built a little shelter for him. He seemed content with whatever they gave him.

A week passed and one day, Mason found the beggar gone. Mason and his mother searched for him but he was nowhere to be found. They didn’t know what had happened to him.
