When Tal Golesworthy was told he needed a lifesaving heart operation in 1993, he said no. Golesworthy has Marfan syndrome, a genetic condition affecting body tissues.
Back in 1993, his doctor told him that his aorta (主动脉) was so enlarged that it would unavoidably break unless he underwent a major surgery. “The operation really didn’t look attractive,” says Golesworthy. What he particularly didn’t like was having to take a medicine after the operation that would prevent blood clots (血栓) but presented its own risks. “I was riding motorbikes then, and skiing, so my whole lifestyle would have been affected.”
By 2000, however, his condition had worsened. Realizing something had to be done, Golesworthy put his years of experience as a research-and-development engineer with the United Kingdom’s National Coal Board to good use. He decided he would fix himself. “Learning new stuff and developing new ideas, that was my job,” Golesworthy says.
So Golesworthy spent 30 hours in an MRI scanner, used 3D printing to create a copy of his heart aorta, and wrapped it with a special material. Strong determination together with an original yet practical solution won him the support of two leading surgeons who helped him raise the money to develop his idea.
In May 2004, at the age of 47, he became the guinea pig for his own invention. The operation was a success. It has since been used by surgeons in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the Netherlands. “When you’re as motivated as I was,” Golesworthy said, “you make things happen.”
    4. Why did Golesworthy refuse to take the major operation?
    A. Because the heart surgery was too risky.
    B. Because his way of life would be influenced.
    C. Because his aorta would break during the surgery.
    D. Because he assumed that it would not save his life.
    5. Golesworthy is a person with .
    A. resolution and new ideas B. motivation and magical power
    C. curiosity and mental problems D. optimism and practical lifestyle
    6. What does the underlined part in the last paragraph probably mean?
    A. An expert in medicine. B. An animal with talents.
    C. A subject for experiment. D. A patient with a serious disease.
    7. What is the main idea of the text?
    A. An engineer became a surgeon. B. A patient invented an operation.
    C. A patient never gave in to death. D. An engineer helped fix his own heart.
    【答案】4. B 5. A 6. C 7. D
    【解析】

    【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Strong determination together with an original yet practical solution won him the support of two leading surgeons who helped him raise the money to develop his idea.(坚定的决心和一个新颖而实用的解决方案为他赢得了两位顶尖外科医生的支持,他们帮助他筹集资金来实现他的想法)”可知,Golesworthy是一个有决心和新想法的人。故选A项。
    【6题详解】

Sometimes when we eat, what we’re hungry for isn’t food — it’s the taste of memory. Studies show that foods we think of as comfort foods don’t contain any magical properties. What might be comforting is the feeling of proximity (亲近) to other people associated with the foods.
Thoughts about comfort foods are often linked to calories, warmth or a sense of well-being, but what we don’t think about is that they also provide something social to us. People like comfort foods because of their ability to make them feel that they belong.
When Marcel Proust, author of Remembrance of Things Past, bit into a cake at his aunt’s house, he was overwhelmed by a feeling of nostalgia. Where had this “all-powerful joy ” come from? He sensed that it was connected to the taste of tea and cake, but it “ went far beyond” those flavors, he wrote. In Proust’s case, the taste he experienced took him back to childhood experiences with a beloved aunt, to whom he formed a strong bond.
Comfort foods are often thought of as being rich in calories or full of sugar. Nevertheless, other studies have also shown that the line between comfort and food isn’t as clear as “ junk food = happiness. ” Eating so-called junk food does activate the brain’s reward system, but that high is short-lived. It’s not the deep reward of real comfort. On the other hand, if you feel bad, you might as well have a salad, as long as there is something in the food to bring back pleasant memories and create a sense of belonging. Taste and smell, Proust wrote, “ stay fresh a long time. ”
    8. How do comfort foods function?
    A. They inspire a sense of belonging. B. They are linked to all-powerful joy.
    C. They provide the calories one needs. D. They set off the brain’s reward system.
    9. Why does the author mention Marcel Proust in Para. 3?
    A. To express love for a special cake. B. To share a good childhood memory.
    C. To. show the nature of comfort foods. D. To prove a popular belief about foods.
    10. What does Para. 4 mainly talk about?
    A. The less clear line between comfort and food.
    B. The connection between junk food and happiness.
    C. The difference between comfort foods and junk food.
    D. The relationship between comfort foods and reward system.
    11. Where does the passage probably come from?
    A. A science report. B. An advertisement.
    C. A cooking guide. D. A health magazine.
    【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. A

推理判断题。根据第三段中“In Proust’s case, the taste he experienced took him back to childhood experiences with a beloved aunt, to whom he formed a strong bond.(在普鲁斯特的例子中,他体验到的味道把他带回了童年与心爱的阿姨的经历,他与她形成了牢固的纽带。)”可知,作者举Marcel Proust的例子来展示安慰食物的本质,故选C。
    【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段中“Comfort foods are often thought of as being rich in calories or full of sugar. Nevertheless, other studies have also shown that the line between comfort and food isn’t as clear as “ junk food = happiness. ”(安慰食物通常被认为是富含卡路里或糖分的食物。然而,其他研究也表明,舒适和食物之间的界限并不像“垃圾食品=快乐”那样清晰。)”可知,本段主要讲述安慰食物与其功能作用之间的关系,故选D。
    【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“Studies show that foods we think of as comfort foods don’t contain any magical properties. What might be comforting is the feeling of proximity (亲近) to other people associated with the foods.(研究表明,我们认为是安慰食物并不含有任何神奇的特性。令人舒服的是与这些食物相关的其他人的亲近感。)”可知,这篇文章的主旨为科学研究表明,安慰食物令人感到舒适的原因,故本文应该是来自于科学报告,故选A。
    D
Quite often, no matter how good you are, your success is dependent on how other people such as your boss, peers, clients and customers perceive your communication and responses. So when you come to people who make the key difference between helping you or holding you back, how can you influence and persuade them to give what you want?
Psychological researches repeatedly show that people generally make up their minds on whether to help or hinder you based on whether they like you or not. It is human nature. What can you do about it? You need to make a good impression on others to ensure they like you and give you what you want. Research again shows that people give opportunities to the people they like best. In fact, most people actually make up their minds about other people in the first five minutes or less of meeting someone. These are called first impressions or “moments of truth” .
Once they make up their minds, they tend to be very reluctant to change their opinions. You hardly have room for error when making that first impression on a new acquaintance. Therefore, whether you are applying for a job, going for an interview, attending a meeting with your boss or peers, or serving a customer, you need to prepare yourself mentally and rehearse how you will manage the first few minutes of your interaction. This includes doing your homework to gather information and researching all possible issues so you will know how to address them should the other party raise them unexpectedly.
It is amazing how poorly some people can come across at the beginning. The worst thing is that they do not even seem to realize it. Having good qualifications and an excellent work performance does not excuse candidates from trying to make a good first impression.
    12. What is the passage mainly about?
    A. Persuading people to like you. B. People making the key difference.
    C. Winning strategies for a job interview. D. Making a good first impression.
    13. Which is the way people tend to decide whether to like other people or not?
    A. They make quick decisions.
    B. They change their opinions frequently.
    C. They prefer people who are experienced.
    D. They pay much attention to good qualifications.
    14. Which of the following strategies might help in an interview?
    A. Show your friendliness and confidence.
B Ask the interviewers for homework to do.
    C. Know as much as possible about the situation.
    D. Do something unexpected to impress interviewers.
    15. What will probably be talked about in the next part of the passage?
    A. Examples of how good first impressions help people succeed.
    B. Some practical advice to help make a good first impression.
    C. Questions that might be asked by the interviewers.
    D. How to win over people who don't like you at first.
    【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. B

    第二节故事续写(满分25分)
    52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was only a dollar. Dylan Belscher noticed it on the floor as he sat at the back of his English class in March. When the school day ended, Belscher wandered back to the classroom. The wrinkled old bill was still there. He could have pocketed it easily without thinking twice. But he picked it up and brought it to his English teacher. Katie Mattison. “It wasn’t my money,” Belscher said, which he saw as a sufficient explanation.
Mattison, 54, was a little surprised he should turn the dollar in, knowing a lot of people would have just kept it. She suggested that Belscher tape it to the whiteboard at the front of the classroom, where she always put lost things. Maybe the dollar was the money for lunch or bustickets for the student who lost it. “You can always tell when someone is looking for something,” Mattison said. A day or two later, the school shut down for the holiday break. Neither the teacher nor her student thought twice about the dollar.
Hunter Rose, then a senior, was in an English class after break when she spotted the dollar on the whiteboard. It was a bit of a mystery, Rose said. After class, she asked Mattison why it was there. The teacher was still waiting for the original owner to claim it, so she replied, “I don’t know.” Rose took the tape from Mattison’s desk and taped a second dollar to the board. That got it rolling.
The sight of the two dollar bills, side by side, awakened something in Mattison’s students. They started asking about the purpose of the money. to which Mattison always gave the same answer: She didn’t know. At that point, it was true. Several other students, feeling it interesting, taped up single dollar bills. Mattison—an experienced teacher who recognized a phenomenon in the making-wrote the initial of each student on each specific bill, and she started to leave the tape beside the whiteboard. The effort snowballed.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Even with no specific purpose, many students wanted to participate.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One morning, Mattison asked her students if they’d like to use the money for something good.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Even with no specific purpose, many students wanted to participate. Belscher said everyone decided Mattison had some unspoken goal and that there would be some mysterious point at which she would reveal the secret. They figured larger donations could help them get there faster. One student taped a $20 bill to the whiteboard. Another student dug into her birthday savings and taped up another $20. The amount continued to grow over several weeks until it reached $175. As for the original dollar, the person who lost it never came looking. That left Mattison to decide upon the best resolution.
One morning Mattison asked her students if they’d like to use the money for something good. They all agreed delightedly, waiting for Mattison’s plan. She continued to ask the teens whether they minded if she donated the dollars in their names to a non-profit for cancer cure. Their answer was to tape more money to push the amount up to $320. Mattison, choking back tears as she recalled the moment, carefully took the cash off the board and made a donation before the beginning of May. That was Saturday. By Monday afternoon, eight more dollars had been taped to the board.
