    Starting ut
Watch the vide and answer the questins. 1 What predictins abut the future were made? Were they crrect?2 What is yur understanding f “the future has unlimited pssibilities”?
    >视频脚本Future r Fantasy? Nt s very lng ag,the idea f flying acrss the Atlantic Ocean in just a few hurs wuld have been pure fantasy. The American aviatr Orville Wright even declared in 1908 that “N flying machine will ever fly frm New Yrk t Paris...” Yet,tday,we think little f hpping n a plane t take such a jurney. Lking back at sme f the predictins thrughut histry, what is perhaps mst remarkable is that they were made decades r even centuries befre becming reality. Mre than 300 years ag,the wrld’s first scientific bdy,the Ryal Sciety, was funded in Lndn. Its mtt Nullius in verba, meaning“take nbdy’s wrd fr it”,reflected its funders’ spirit f investigatin— a spirit that led them t predict flying machines, rgan transplantatin and “perpetual light” with extrardinary accuracy. But it’s nt nly scientists wh have lked int the future. Predictins have als been made by writers. At the start f the twentieth century,H.G. Wells predicted the inventin f the atm bmb in his nvel The Wrld Set Free. And in the 1940s,authr Arthur C. Clarke prpsed that space statins wuld ne day bradcast televisin signals all ver the glbe. Nt all predictins, hwever, have turned ut t be quite s accurate. Thmas Watsn, chairman f IBM,was quted as saying in 1943 that“there is a wrld market fr maybe five cmputers”. As fr the 1955 predictin in The New Yrk Times that“nuclear-pwered vacuum cleaners will prbably be a reality in 10 years”—well, even tday that sunds rather a lt like science fictin. Crrect and incrrect, the great number f insights int the unknwn indicates that the future is filled with unlimited pssibilities. Wh knws what we will be able t create tmrrw? Only time will tell.
Lk at the pictures and answer the questins.
1 Have yu watched any f these films? What stries d they tell abut the future f ur wrld? I’ve watched the film Avatar and Ready Player One. Avatar tells a stry abut human beings invading anther planet in search f a rare mineral. Ready Player One displays a stry happening in virtual reality in the future. 2 D yu think the events in these films culd cme true? What d yu think the wrld will be like in the future? N,I dn’t think s. I think human beings still live n Earth and peple will try t live in harmny with nature.
    Understanding ideas
Read the facts abut Al and answer the questins.
Milestnes in Artificial Intelligence○1950 Mathematician and lgician,Alan Turing devised the Turing Test,a test n the ability f machines t shw human-like intelligence. ○1955 Cmputer scientist,Jhn McCarthy cined the term“artificial intelligence”. ○1972 Shakey, the first mbile rbt able t make decisins accrding t reasn, was cmpleted. ○2001 The Electrlux Trilbite, the first rbtic vacuum cleaner designed fr hme use, went n sale. ○2015 AlphaG became the first cmputer prgram t beat a human prfessinal G player. ○2017 AlphaG Zer beat the previus versin f AlphaG by 100 games t nil.
1 What can yu learn frm the timeline?Frm the timeline,I can learn that AI technlgy has develped greatly, and can nw utperfrm humans in sme aspects.
2 Are yu cncerned abut develpments in AI? Why r why nt?I am cncerned. Because the rise f pwerful artificial intelligence is either the best thing t happen t humanity r the wrst thing t happen t humanity. We have n chice but t d what we can t ensure that ur future is gd fr us and the envirnment.
Milestnes in Artificial Intelligence○1950 Mathematician and lgician,Alan Turing devised the Turing Test,a test n the ability f machines t shw human-like intelligence. ○1955 Cmputer scientist,Jhn McCarthy cined the term “artificial intelligence”.
3 Hw d yu think AI will develp in the future? In my pinin,in the future, machines will be infinitely clse t human capabilities, but never surpass them.
Read the passage t see if it changes yur pinin n the future f AI. If s, in what ways?
    Artificial Intelligence:A REAL THREAT?
In the wrds f Prfessr Stephen Hawking artificial intelligence will be “either the best,r the wrst thing, ever t happen t humanity ” . Technlgy f Tmrrw Frum wants t hear yur thughts n AI. Is it ur greatest human achievement s far? Or is it the biggest threat t ur existence?
Thanks t AI,I’ve gt my wn super-smart persnal assistant built int my phne. She always has an immediate answer fr any questin I put t her,and even uses my answers t learn mre abut my preferences. It used t feel like 50 per cent f my time was spent researching new restaurants. In cntrast,my PA nly needs a few secnds t find the right place. Every recmmendatin she gives me is great since she can predict if I will like a particular restaurant.
And speaking f hanging ut,I’m hping that self-driving cars are available sn. I’ve been taking driving lessns fr ver a year, and still haven’t gt my licence. Self-driving cars can learn t drive in the same way that we d,and can make judgements based n infrmatin. And as they wn’t be susceptible t human errr, they’ll certainly be a lt safer. The nly thing is that there might be a few machine-learning prblems when the first cars hit the market,s perhaps I’d better learn t drive first. Still,I d think that develpments in AI will n the whle make ding day-t-day things a lt easier.
The technlgy yu’re using and enjying tday is a basic frm f AI which can’t think independently withut prgramming. Of curse,it culd be very useful t have a mre advanced frm f AI—a truly independent frm f artificial intelligence, capable f exercising its wn judgement, culd help us slve many f the wrld’s prblems. But have yu ever thught abut the risks? After all,why wuld an independent frm f AI need t cnsider the pinins and desires f humans? We culd be seen as a “small” incnvenience that’s in the way f a slutin t a bigger prblem. If we’re lucky,AI might think we’re valuable enugh t keep arund. If nt,it might wipe us all ut!
Even if that desn’t happen, there are ther risks. Millenniumbutterfly,yu say hw great it wuld be t have self-driving cars, but what abut all the taxi drivers wh wuld lse their jbs? They wuld just be amng the first victims f AI. Nearly every jb is ptentially at risk in the lng run. Even jurnalists are nw being replaced with technlgy that can write basic news reprts. As it is,almst 50 per cent f US jbs are at risk frm autmatin in the next 20 years. The truth is that nne f us is prepared fr the challenges f AI.
Machine learning is smething we have cme t accept as a part f ur mdern wrld. I believe mst f the value f AI lies in its capacity t analyse and interpret vast amunts f data, which means it can even slve prblems that are t challenging fr human experts. But while super-intelligent AI culd be the biggest leap frward in human histry, if it ges wrng r falls int the wrng hands it culd als be the mst dangerus. Hwever,AI is nt ging t g away. We have n chice but t embrace it and regulate it. One thing I think we all agree n, thugh,is that saying “My AI did it!” wn’t be any excuse fr illegal r immral behaviur!
Yes. In the aspects f the safety and self-driving.
Read the pinins and match them t the persns. Talk abut the pinin yu agree with.
We all need t learn t live with AI technlgy whether we like it r are cncerned abut it. We cannt stp the march f prgress.
I admit that mre advanced AI culd be helpful in slving thewrld’s prblems, but there is a high level f risk invlved.
I can’t understand why sme peple wrry s much. I hpemre breakthrughs in AI will be made sn,s that wecan enjy mre and mre cnvenience.
Organise infrmatin frm the passage and cmplete the diagram.
    AI can make driving safer.
AI can make ding day-t-day things a lt easier.
    AI can slve prblems
Jbs are at risk due t AI.
    AI culd be dangerus
Nw cme up with mre ideas fr each pint f view and share them with the class.
1 What did Stephen Hawking mean when he said that AI will be “either the best, r the wrst thing, ever t happen t humanity”? He meant that AI culd bring us incredible benefits, but nly if the technlgy is managed prperly. If we d nt manage the technlgy prperly,it culd result in human extinctin. 2 D yu use AI in yur daily life? What ther rles can AI play in peple’s lives?Yes. AI has been used in ur daily life, helping us clean the rm, cntrlling sme electrnic devices r even taking care f the ld. AI has als been used in many ther fields, like industry, finance and s n. 3 Hw de s the diagram help yu better understand the passage ? The diagram clearly displays tw different pinins abut AI.
