    Hw a Teacher Can Change Yur Life
    Smiling with satisfactin, Karin Andersn cntinues t cnduct while dzens f students were playing their instruments, and Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphny fills the hall. The emtinal (情感的) drama f cnducting an rchestra (管弦乐团) f teenagers is part f a typical day's teaching fr Karin. “Teaching is like surfing,” she says. “Yu have n idea what's ging t happen and there's n guarantee that things will g accrding t plan. Yu have t be n guard at all times.” But the unpredictability f her students desn't make her jb hard, she says. In fact, wrking with smetimes difficult teenagers, which she says might exhaust ther teachers, is what keeps her cming back day after day.
    Karin believes music lessns may have unexpected benefits. Research has fund that they imprve a child's language develpment, and the reasning skills extremely imprtant t maths and science. “We can't be sure if music really makes kids perfrm better academically, r if smarter students just naturally becme invlved with music anyway, but there might be a cnnectin. Certainly, schls need smething fr thse brighter students. It's nt s much giving them a release frm studying hard, but mre that they need t be stretched, and pushed in a different directin.”
    But the benefits f music educatin are fr everyne, nt just the clever kids. Karin pints ut that there are strng cnnectins between music and the mtivatin t learn, the ability t fcus, and even smene's cnfidence and tlerance.
    Music can als help t create a psitive, supprtive learning envirnment, which Karin always tries t create in her rchestra. Being gruped by age, nt ability, makes everyne new feel welcme and part f a family. “In schl yu're very aware f scial classes — the rich kids and the pr kids — and all the little grups that gssip all the time,” says rchestra member Laura Greene. “But in the rchestra, everyne is part f the grup, and equally imprtant. We're all trying t imprve tgether. We've all gt unique talents.”
    In Karin's classrm, there are n awards decrating the walls. She says this might put the rchestra under pressure r make them wrry abut cmpetitin, thugh in fact the schl has wn many prizes, which she is clearly prud f. “What's mst imprtant t me is that everyne wrks as a team,” she says. “It's a magic mment when there's abslute unity.”
    Karin wants the rchestra t widen the hrizns f everyne wh jins. When sme parents weren't able t affrd certain trips f the rchestra, Karin surprised everyne by rganising what she called “schlarships”, with the schl paying part f the mney t students wh had been psitive and cperative. They weren't awarded n the basis f wh had a special gift fr music.
    In her ffice, Karin prudly displays a picture f anther student. Karin says, “Thmas was smart, but he hated schl, and he seemed cut ff frm his peers, alne in a wrld f his wn. The rchestra made him cme ut f his shell.” After graduating, Thmas wrte t Karin, “I'm s grateful t yu fr allwing me t play the mst beautiful music in the wrld, even thugh I never tk it up prfessinally. I understand nw that music educates the mind and the heart, and helps yu t cnnect with thers.”

    4 . Whether yu are frm China, France, r Germany, yu smile in the same language. A smile has the pwer t make smene's day. If yu smile at smene, they will prbably smile back. Therefre, smile all the time and pretty sn the whle planet will wear a happy smile. Life is like a mirrr, and we get the best results when we smile at it.
