Alexis, 17, sat quietly in the passenger seat of her dad's car.She let her eyes lazily scan, the landscape for wildlife. Then a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them.“Dad, there's a deer there!” Alexis said.It was a male deer with sharp antlers(角) on each side of its head.

As the car moved closer, Alexis saw that the deer's head was bent toward the ground. Then she heard a scream and saw an arm fly up near the deer's head.Alexis realized the deer was attacking a woman.Sue, a 44yearold mother, had been out for her morning run.The deer followed her and edged closer.“I knew I was in trouble,” Sue says. She went to pick up a stick for selfdefense, and the deer charged. It lifted her with its antlers and threw her into the air.Sue could feel blood flew down her leg.Within seconds, the deer had pushed her off the road.

When Alexis and her father pulled up, the deer was throwing Sue like a doll.Alexis looked into the woman's terrified eyes, and before her father had even stopped the car, the teenager jumped quickly out of the car and ran toward the deer.“I was kicking it to get its attention,” she says. Then her father, who had followed his daughter, pushed the deer away from the woman.

Alexis helped Sue into the car, and then applied a piece of cloth to Sue's injured leg.“We're going to get you to a hospital,” Alexis said. Then she heard her father shout loudly. He had been knocked to the ground.Alexis took hold of a hammer from the car and ran to where her father lay on his back. She beat the deer's head and neck, but the blows didn't scare it away.“I was losing faith,” she says.“A couple more strikes, Alexis,” said her father.“You can do it.” Turning the hammer around, Alexis closed her eyes and beat the deer's neck with all her strength. When she opened her eyes, the deer was running away.Alexis got in the driver's seat and sped toward the nearest hospital.

After Sue was treated, she tearfully thanked her rescuers.“You expect a teenage girl to get on the phone and call for help,” she says, “not to beat up a deer.”

Human beings have used tools for a very long time.In some parts of the world you can still find tools that people used more than two million years ago. They made these tools by hitting one stone against another. In this way, they broke off pieces from one of the stones. These chips of stone were usually sharp on one side.People used them for cutting meat and skin from dead animals, and also for making other tools out of wood.Human beings needed to use tools because they did not have sharp teeth like other meat eating animals, such as lions and tigers.Tools helped people to get food more easily.

Working with tools also helped to develop human intelligence. The human brain grew bigger, and human beings began to invent more and more tools and machines. The stone chip was one of the first tools that people used, and perhaps it is the most important. Some scientists say that it was the key to success of mankind.

Since 1960 a new kind of tool has appeared. This is the silicon chip (硅芯片).It is smaller than a finger nail, but it can store lots of information. It is an electronic brain.Every year these chips get cleverer, but their size gets smaller, and their cost gets less. They are used in watches, calculators and intelligent machines that we can use in many ways.In the future we will not need to work with tools in the old way.Machines will do everything for us.People will have plenty of spare time. But what will they do with it?

Human beings used stone chips for more than two million years, but human life changed very little in that time.We have used silicon chips for only a few years, but life is changing faster every day. What will life be like twenty years from now? What will the world be like two million years from now?

    8.From Paragraph 1, we can know         .

A.why early human beings cut skin from dead animals

B.how early human beings discovered the tools

C.what early human beings used the tools for

D.what food early human beings stored

根据第一段中“People used them for cutting meat and skin from dead animals, and also for making other tools out of wood.”

Even as Google plans to test its fleet(车队)of selfdriving cars on public roads this summer, its business model remains a bit of a mystery.By 2025, as many as 250,000 selfdriving vehicles could be sold each year globally, according to a study by an industry research firm.

“Vehicles that can take anyone from A to B at the push of a button could transform mobility for millions of people,” said Chris Urmson, director of Google's selfdriving car project. For now, Google has no plans to sell any of its selfdriving cars. They are strictly for research. But they will hit public roads this summer near Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California.Previous testing has taken place only on closed courses.

The cars are built to operate without a steering wheel, accelerator(油门) or brake pedal.“Our software and sensors do all the work,” Urmson said.“The vehicles will be very basic—we want to learn from them and adapt them as quickly as possible—but they will take you where you want to go at the push of a button.” The prototypes(雏形) are the first of a 100car fleet the tech giant is building.

In the long run, Urmson sees a future of safer roads-the majority of auto accidents are caused by human error-and fewer traffic jams.Robotic cars could also shuttle people who can't drive because of age or illness.

Google has said that selfdriving cars could launch new business models in which people buy the use of vehicles they don't own.The company has already tested other types of selfdriving cars on public streets, including modified Lexus sportutility vehicles, under a special permit program by the California Department of Motor Vehicles that requires a human driver at the controls.

The state has issued six other companies permits to operate such cars, including Delphi, MercedesBenz, Volkswagen, Tesla, Bosch and Nissan. The vehicles that will be tested on open roads this summer will have removable steering wheels, accelerator and brake pedals to allow “safety drivers” to take control if needed.

Google says the cars are safe. The vehicles have sensors that “can detect objects out to a distance of more than two football fields in all directions, which is especially helpful on busy streets with lots of intersections,” Urmson said.“We're looking forward to learning how the community understands and interacts with the vehicles, and to uncovering challenges that are unique to a fully selfdriving vehicle,” Urmson said.

12.The passage informs us that selfdriving cars         .

    A.will probably decrease traffic jams

    B.have already passed necessary tests

C.have been purchased by some companies

D.will be able to communicate with drivers

根据文章最后一段前两句“Google says the cars are safe. The vehicles have sensors that ‘can detect objects out to a distance of more than two football fields in all directions, which is especially helpful on busy streets with lots of intersections,’”可知Google说这些汽车很安全,可以从很远的距离就感应到物体的存在,这对于交通安全很有帮助。再根据第四段第一句“In the long run, Urmson sees a future of safer roads—the majority of auto accidents are caused by human error—and fewer traffic jams.” 故A正确。]

    13.According to Chris Urmson,         .

A.software and sensors are vital for selfdriving cars

B.selfdriving cars can give driving orders to humans

C.selfdriving cars are specially designed for the elderly

D.ordinary vehicles will be replaced by selfdriving cars

根据第三段前两句“The cars are built to operate without a steering wheel, accelerator(油门)or brake pedal.‘Our software and sensors do all the work,’ Urmson said.” 故A正确。]

14.The underlined word “intersection” in the last paragraph probably means         .

    A.accidents B.buildings

    C.crossings D.vehicles

根据最后一段第二句“The vehicles have sensors that ‘can detect objects out to a distance of more than two football fields in all directions, which is especially helpful on busy streets with lots of intersections,’(这种新型车辆可以感应到很远之外的物体,这一点对于有很多交叉路口的忙碌的街道上是很有帮助的)”。

15.What is the best title for this passage?

    A.Selfdriving Car Avoids Human Errors

    B.Selfdriving Car Meets New Challenges

C.Google's Selfdriving Car Enjoys Global Popularity

D.Google's Selfdriving Car Graduates to City Streets

Sometimes even though you're paying attention in class, studying for tests, and doing your homework, certain classes seem too hard. Although you may hope that things will get easier, most of the time this doesn't happen.

What does happen for many people is that they work hard as they fall further behind.  16  If you need extra help, the most important thing to know is that there's nothing embarrassing about it. No one is expected to understand everything, and people have very different learning styles.

17  He or she may be able to work with you before or after school and explain things more clearly. But what if you don't feel comfortable with your teacher? If so, you can speak to other teachers directly.  18

You might also be able to get some help from other students. If there's a good student, think about asking that person if you can study together.  19  However, keep in mind that this might not get you the results you need.

Another option for extra help is a tutor, either on weekends, or in the evenings. You'll need to tell your parents about this because it costs money to hire a tutor. Tutors sometimes come to your home, but there are also tutoring centers across the country.  20  Tutors help review and further explain things taught in the classroom. The advantage of having a tutor is that it gives you the opportunity to ask questions directly and work at your own pace.

A.Naturally, this makes them hate a class and everything to do with it.

B.Working hard means you can succeed.

C.The first place to turn for help is your teacher.

D.This might help because you'll hear the information from your peers.

E.However, you may be refused in most cases as no one wants to help you.

F.Sometimes it just helps to have someone new explain something in a different way.

G.A tutor may have broad knowledge of many things or may be trained in just one subject.

16.A [由“What does happen for many people is that they work hard as they fall further behind.” 故选A项。]

17.C [由“He or she may be able to work with you before or after school and explain things more clearly.”

18.F [由“But what if you don't feel comfortable with your teacher? If so, you can speak to other teachers directly.”

19.D [由“You might also be able to get some help from other students. If there's a good student, think about asking that person if you can study together.”

20.G [由“Tutors help review and further explain things taught in the classroom.”

29  by Emily's selflessness, I decided to contribute one my old bicycles to a car dealer who was collecting used bikes for poor children.  30   I selected a shiny model from my collection, however, it seemed as if a   31   bike took on a glow(发光).Should I contribute two? No! One would be enough! But I still couldn't shake the feeling that I should give another bike. When I later  32  the bikes, the car dealer said, “You're making two kids very happy, sir. Here are your tickets. For each bicycle we receive from the kind people, we're giving away one chance to   33   a girls' mountain bike.”

ask sb. to do sth.“让某人做某事”为固定短语。故填to accept。]

故填but。]

    42.her [考查人称代词,of one's own属于某人自己的,指Lily,所以用her。故填her。]

come up with“提出”为固定短语。故填with。]

Festivals are meant to celebrate important times of year.Different countries have different festivals.

Some festivals are held to honor the dead or to satisfy the ancestors.Others are in memory of famous people.Besides, there are some harvest festivals, when people are grateful because their food is gathered for the winter and the agricultural work is over. The most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter and the coming of spring.

Festivals bring people together, let them enjoy life, be proud of their customs and forget their work for a little while.

We all could say that we have bad days to endure as we go through life, but what does it take to have a really good day?

Some would suggest that a day would be great if everything they did turned out well, or they got exactly what they needed. On the other hand, have you ever thought that what you may give someone else may be the best day you ever had especially when you put someone else's wellbeing or happiness first on your list?

There is special warmth available to you and that warmth can come from a helping hand, doing a small favor for a total stranger, or even a smile.

I recall a day recently when I had to go to the hospital for an appointment because I wasn't feeling well and my doctor sent me to a specialist to try and determine the cause.

As I drove to the hospital, I admittedly was feeling gloomy and certainly wasn't on top of my game.As I approached the hospital, I began my search for a parking spot, a spot that was hard to come with everyone else trying to do the same thing.I finally found a spot not too far from the entrance to the hospital.

As I got out and brought my change out of my pocket, I noticed a man looking somewhat upset standing in front of a parking meter two cars away.He seemed to be searching his pockets for what I supposed was change for the meter.

Although,I really didn't feel that great, I thought that I should at least go over to him and find out if I could help him.As I approached him, he turned to look at me, feeling at a loss not knowing what to do.I asked him if he had a problem I could help with, and he said, without hesitation, that he had no change at all because he left it in his houseonly thinking about visiting his sick wife.

    Paragraph 1:

Faced with such a situation, I reached into my pocket.

    Paragraph 2:

The funny thing was that I felt a lot brighter, and a small smile came to my face.

    Paragraph 1:

Faced with such a situation, I reached into my pocket.Soon I pulled out some change and gave it to him, without hesitation and saving a single word, I went on towards completing my own business. As you know , I had an appointment, for a response, I turned on my heel and said to him as I was walking away, “Have a good day.”

    Paragraph 2:

The funny thing was that I felt a lot brighter, and a small smile came to my face. And I seemed to walk just a little quicker.I was walking away when he called out “thank you so much” far behind.Honestly, I didn't even expect him to say anything. It was satisfying enough to know that I had made a simple gesture to help someone else who needed a little hand, a little help. However, it brought to my face a smile. It doesn't take much to lend those in need a helping hand; a big payoff is what you get in return.More importantly, with such warmth catching on, our society will become more and more harmonious and comfortable.
