    Unit 2  A day in the life of whiz-kid Wendy

    Vocabulary and background

    Teaching aims

    1   To help students review regular activities students do every day

    2   To introduce and provide students with vocabulary

     

    Materials

    1           Students Book 8A, page 18

     

    Teaching procedure

    Step 1  Mime game

    Say: Guess what I usually do in my daily life.

    Teacher pantomimes the activities to students, and have them guess what the teacher does in his/her daily life

           I clean my teeth every day.

           I sometimes play badminton. (I play badminton twice a week.)

           I often ride my bicycle to school. (I ride my bicycle to school most days.)

           I never play the piano.

     

    Step 2   A Brainstorming: What about you?

    Ask: Which of these things do you do every day?

                           do once or twice a day?

                           do you never do?

    Show Ss some pictures and let them talk about their daily life freely.

     

    Step 3  An interview: About your parents

    Have Ss work in pairs to interview each other about their parents the daily life.

      Suggested questions:

             Whats your fathers job?

             What does he usually do?

             What does he do at 7 oclock in the morning?

             When does he go to work?

     

    Step 4:  Introduce the new vocabulary

    a)        Teacher may introduce the vocabulary like this:

    The manager is someone who works in a company. The manager is one of the best people in the company. He/She is the top one. And he/she always talk about the work with the clients. They discuss it. The clients are the people who buy the things or use a service from the company. And the accountants work for the manager. He/She looks after the money and keeps the financial records. His/Her work is not easy or simple.

    b)        Show students the following diagram by introducing the vocabulary.

    c)         Have students read the new vocabulary.

    d)        Have students read and choose the suitable words to complete the passage.

    My brother also works in the company. He looks after the money and keeps the financial records. He is an _________________, but his job isnt _______________.

    ( answers: manager, top, clients, discuss, accountant, simple)

     

    Step 5:  Pair work: Guess the meaning

    Say: I’ve taught you some vocabulary with the meaning. Now its your turn to read the sentences and try to guess the meaning of each italized words.

    a)      Have Ss discuss in pairs and try to match the correct paraphrases to the words.

    1. I will attend a meeting this Friday.
    2. My sister works for the pet shop. She is responsible for feeding and walking the dogs every day.
    3. The sales of our new car are very high.
    4. They play the violin in the concert on Sundays.

    b)      Check the answers and have students read the words with the paraphrases.

    Step 6:  Write a camping plan

    Say: Next month, 35 persons from Mr Gs company will go camping on Holiday Island. 20 will be female (F) and 15 will be make (M). The manager asked Mr G to arrange a programme of

    activities for them. So Mr G asked his colleague what they would like to do, and got the answers noted below.
