My brother Jack, and I have many hobbies in common. We watch videos on YouTube. We go swimming or run round outside. Jack makes me laugh really hard. He's so much smarter than any other student I know. But most kids never find out how funny, kind and wise Jack is. That's because most kids don't get to know Jack at all. He doesn't get invited to birthday parties. He doesn't get picked first in gym class.

Jack has a disability. He walks with braces on his legs. Jack also doesn't have as much social awareness as other kids at his age. That weans it can be hard for him to understand what other people are thinking and feeling. Sometimes he makes sudden sounds and talks too much. But he doesn't mean to take over the conversation. Usually he's just really excited and doesn't want to lose other kids' attention.

When Jack was born, doctors said he might never walk, talk, or swallow. He has worked so hard to be able to do these things. From the time he was a baby, he has had many surgeries. Now he goes to about nine different appointments each week. He does stretches every day before he puts on his braces. He also does a really cool bath treatment. It helps improve his speech and movement. Now he's even able to help with chores. As his sister, I am so proud of all that Jack has achieved.

But I am also grateful for all that Jack's challenges have taught our family. We always support each other and have learned to have compassion for others and it is this kind of sympathy that leads me to help others.

I know teens like me hear so many lessons about treating people equally. But please understand that every kid deserves to be included. You have the power to make that happen. It starts with the most simple thing: Just say "hi".

    24. Why does Jack sometimes talk too much in the conversation?

    A. To attract attention.                    B. To show off his cleverness.

    C. To present his high social awareness.      D. To let others know his sense of humor.

    25. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about concerning Jack?

    A. His expectations for the future life.      B. His advantages over other children.

    C. His efforts to overcome difficulties.      D. His sufferings during his teenage years.

    26. What does the underlined word "compassion" in paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A. Appreciation.      B. Pity.      C. Judgement.      D. Defense.

    27. What does the author call on us to do in the last paragraph?

    A. Meet the needs of kids.             B. Treat disabled kids well.

    C. Do simple things for our family.      D. Understand the importance of politeness.

A third of all food produced worldwide is never eaten. But how easy is it to reduce our food waste? Two students have found out.

"That's not a very pleasant smell," says student Helen Chigwende, standing with the entire contents of her household food waste bin laid out before her. Helen and one of her housemates, Will Smith, want to learn how to live a more sustainable(可持续的)lifestyle, so they need to understand their habits. That means searching their leftovers or food that has been sent straight to the bin without being touched. They soon find out how much of their food waste could have been avoided. "We've got a piece of sandwich meat that doesn't even seem to be eaten," Will says, looking at what still-eatable food he could save. It is formed into a pile of "avoidable" waste, which soon becomes the "unavoidable" things.

"One of the reasons why we end up with a lot of food waste is that food isn't stored properly," explained Dr Woolley. Sometimes it is placed in an area of the fridge or cupboard where it is not easily noticeable, so it gets left and not eaten in time. There are also two other tips in reducing food waste. "The first is planning," he says. "Write a shopping list to make sure you're not repeating things you've already got. The second is preparation. Cook the right amount for the people that are going to eat."

Back at the student house, Helen and Will are cooking vegetarian food to ensure a sustainable lifestyle. The long-term test of whether they can keep up with their dietary prices and reduce food waste is yet to come. But both are devoted to making a positive change now. Despite being a "picky eater", Helen says a week of sticking to health has not been too difficult. "It's just about finding things you'll enjoy eating."

    32. What can we learn about Helen from paragraph 2?

    A. She has wasted a lot of "avoidable" food.

    B. She has never touched her household's bin.

    C. She has formed a habit of sorting out waste food.

    D. She has calculated the amount of household waste.

    33. What does Dr Woolley stress in paragraph 3?

    A. Measures to keep food fresh.          B. Negative effects of food waste.

    C. Ways of living a healthy lifestyle.      D. Suggestions for reducing food waste.

    34. What can be inferred about Helen and Will from the last paragraph?

    A. They are tired of eating vegetables.       B. They find it difficult to stick to health.

    C. They are trying to live more sustainably.   D. They have difficulty keeping good eating habits.

    35. What is the best title for the text?

    A. Be Cautious about Food Waste          B. Food Waste Can Be Unavoidable

    C. Reduce the Amount of Daily Food       D. Forming Good Dietary Habits Is Important

All the three words habit, custom and tradition relate to actions   61   are done many times. The difference is that traditions and customs are practiced over a long period by many people. Habits arc more informal, and usually they   62   (limit) by persons.

Let's talk more about traditions and customs first. Traditions   63   (general) include what most people in a country do on holidays. For example, sharing a meal with turkey   64   (be) a Thanksgiving tradition in the United States. Besides, fireworks are part of America's July 4th holiday tradition.

Customs are also usual ways of behaving. But they are not as old as traditions, and they are practiced by fewer people. Here is   65   example: In the American workplace, it is a custom to shake   66   (hand) with each other when people first meet.

When a custom continues   67   generation to generation, it becomes a tradition. For fifty years, my grandparents had a custom of   68   (swim) in the lake on the first day of summer. Now my aunts, uncles, parents, and cousins do it, too. "Summer swim" is our family tradition.

In comparison, habits are about just   69   (people) behaviors. A habit is something that a person does often in a regular and repeated manner. For example, Jane makes it a habit   70   (look) at the weather first when she reads the newspaper.
