威廉·莎士比亚（WilliamShakespeare，1564－1616）是英国杰出的戏剧家和诗人，他在欧洲文学史上占有特殊的地位，1564年出生在英国中部艾汶河上斯特拉福镇一个富商家庭。少年时代，莎士比亚曾在当地的“文法学校”学习过古典文。”他虽受过良好的基本教育，但是未上过大学。在他13岁的时候，由于家道中落，他中途辍学，走上了独立谋生的道路。1582年，18岁的莎士比亚娶了比自己大8岁的安妮·赫索威。婚后他们生有三个孩子。
三年后，莎士比亚只身离开家乡来到伦敦，在剧场门口给人看马匹，在剧场担任临时演员。大约1592年，莎士比亚开始戏剧创作，并不断获得成功。1599年公司建立了“环球剧院”，他还曾为伦敦环球剧场的股东之一。 大约在1612年，莎士比亚大致完成了38个剧本、两首长诗和154首十四行诗的写作，遂离开伦敦，回到故乡斯特拉福。1616年4月23日，莎士比亚病逝，享年52岁。1995年，联合国教科文组织将4月23日定为“世界读书日”。
虽然莎士比亚只用英文写作，但他却是世界著名作家。他的大部分作品都已被译成多种文字，其剧作也在许多国家上演。代表作品有：《罗密欧与朱丽叶》；四大悲剧《哈姆雷特》、《奥赛罗》、《李尔王》、《麦克白》；等。他的作品反映了当时的社会现实，表达了人文主义的社会政治理想。

《奥赛罗》剧写的是威尼斯大将、摩尔人奥赛罗与元老之女苔丝狄蒙娜倾心相爱，冲破家庭阻力结为夫妻并一同出征。旗官伊阿古，因个人私怨而设计诬陷苔丝狄蒙娜有私情。奥赛罗轻信中计，亲手将妻子掐死，最后真相大白，奥赛罗悔恨交加，拔剑自刎。
《李尔王》剧叙述不列颠王李尔将国土全分给了花言巧语的两个大女儿，而将秉性耿直的小女儿远嫁法国。最终遭到长女次女百般虐待，流落荒野，疯癫而死。《麦克白》剧写苏格兰大将麦克白受女巫诱惑，在野心和夫人的驱使下，杀君自立，后终日被噩梦纠缠，神思恍惚。其妻也发狂自杀而死。最后王子率兵讨伐，麦克白兵败而死。
