    Finding information on the Internet

    1. Teaching objectives

    (1)  The students can learn about the Internet and use the Internet to find

    information they need.

    1. Teaching procedures

    Step 1. Lead-in

    T: Do you like reading stories?

    Ss: Yes.

    T: Today we are going to read a story. Look at this.(Present the story to the students.)

    Molly's teacher, Mr Williams, walked towards the band. “Okay, girls, it's your turn next,” he smiled.

    Molly led her band onto the stage. The girls plugged in their electric guitars. Jasmine picked up her drumsticks.

    “All right, everyone, let's rock this place!” shouted Molly.

    “Yeah!” said the girls.

    Suddenly, there was a loud bang, and the power turned off. The school hall fell silent.

    “Oh no!” cried Jasmine.

    (设计说明:该部分故事节选自新理念英语阅读初中一年级第一册Battle of the Bands,在平时的教学过程中学生已经阅读过该故事,有较深的印象,因此本课选取此故事来导入,以便引出use a dictionary\library\the Internet to find information这三个寻找信息的方法。)

    T: Do you still remember the story?

    Ss: Yes.

    T: Do you remember Molly?

    Ss: Yes.

    T: In this story, Molly and her band took part in a competition, right?

    Ss: Yes.

    T: Now please read part of the story by yourself quickly and quietly. And the I will have a question for you.

    Step 2. Presentation

    T: Have you finished reading the story?

    Ss: Yes.

    T: OK. Here is a question for you. Whats the meaning of rock in the story?

    S: 奏摇滚乐。

    T: Yes! You are right! But how do you get its meaning? We have never learnt

    this word before, right?

    S: I can guess the meaning.

    T: Very clever. If I want to learn more about how to use rock, can I just have a guess?

    Ss: No.

    T: Then what can I do?

    S: I think you can use a dictionary.

    T: Yes. So the dictionary is a good way to find information. And we have learnt how to find information with the help of a dictionary, right?

    Ss: Yes.

    T: If I want to learn more about the story, can I use a dictionary?

    Ss: No.

    T: So what can I do?

    Ss: You can find the book.

    T: Yes. We all know this story is from a book and all of you have this book. (Present the book to the student.) Look at this book. Where can I get this book?

    S: You can buy one in a bookshop.

    S: You can borrow it from the library.

    S: ......

    T: Yes. I borrowed one from our school library. I think the library is a second way for us to find information. Do you agree?

    Ss: Yes.

    T: Do you want to read another part of the story?

    Ss: Yes.

    T: Lets open this book together. (Present another part of the story to the students.)

    “You know the song ‘Forever’?” Molly asked. “ The one I played at my brother’s wedding(婚礼)?”

    Jasmine nodded.

    “Well, we can sing that song today. We don’t need any power(电力) to sing ‘Forever’.”

    Jasmine smiled. “Molly, you are right,” She said. “ That’s such a beautiful song. I cried when I heard you sing it.”

    Jasmine picked up her drumsticks(鼓槌) again. “Okay, let’s do it!” She shouted.

    T: In this story, Mollys band played a song. Do you know its name?

    Ss: Forever.

    T: Do you want to listen to the song?

    Ss: Yes.

    T: OK. Please read another part of the story quietly when you listen to the song.(Play the song.)

    (设计说明:该部分让学生一边读故事,一边听歌曲,既可以让学生感受英文歌曲之美,放松学生身心,调动学生的课堂积极性,也可以为引出the Internet做良好的铺垫。)

    T: What do you think of the song?

    S: It is beautiful.

    T: Yes. I agree with you. It sounds so beautiful! Do you want to learn more about this song?

    Ss: Yes.

    T: How can I get information about this song? Can I use a dictionary?

    Ss: No.

    T: Can I use a library?

    S: No.

    T: So what can I do?

    S: You can use the Internet.

    T: Yes. You are very clever!

    (设计说明:该部分通过连问的方式,让学生对dictionary\library\Internet三种信息获取方式进行潜意识中的归纳和比较,为下面的小结和group work做铺垫。)

    T: Now we have three ways to find information. What are they? Can you fill in the table?(Present the table to the students.)

     

     

     

    Ss: The dictionary, the library and the Internet.

    Step 3: Practice

    T: Some stuents are trying to find informaton. Lets help them choose the best way.

    Practice:

    1. Millie meets some new words when she is reading an English article at school, what can she do?

    2. Daniel are interested in science,  he likes reading something about it between classes, what can he do?

    3. Simon is going to make a presentation(展示) about some amazing things in the world in class, what can he do?

    (设计说明:该部分设计是为了考察学生对三种信息获取方式的优劣理解情况,为后面的group work活动做铺垫。)

    Step 4: Watch and answer

    T: We know we can find information on the Internet. But what is the Internet exactly? Lets watch a video about the Internet and fill in the blanks.(Present the video to the students.)

    T: When you are watching the video, I hope you can write down some keywords. Do you know keywords? Keywords mean important words. Now lets watch the video.

    connected to each other so people can _______________________________.

    (设计说明:该部分设计是为了帮助学生对Internet的含义有形象生动的了解,进一步调动学生的学习兴趣,同时帮助学生练习听力并了解keywords的概念、使用技巧和实用性。)

    Step 5: Read and answer

    Present the followng paragraph to the students.

    T: This is a paragraph form our textbook. Please read this paragraph by yourselves and answer me the question: What is the Internet exactly? You can use your dictionary to look up the new words when you read. Now you have two minutes.

     

    T: What is Internet exactly?

    S: The Internet is an internationl computer network......

    T: Very good. Do you know websites and search engines? Have you looked up them in your dictionary?

    Ss: Yes. They mean 网站and 搜索引擎.

    T: Excellent. I will show you some pictures about them.

    (Present some pictures about websites and search engines to the stunts.)

    T: Why do we need search engines? Read the next paragraph and tell me the answer. You can use your dictionary to look up the new words while reading.

    (设计说明:该部分设计是为了帮助学生熟悉英文词典的使用,同时理解如何使用英特网和搜索引擎,理解搜索引擎的便利性。)

     

     

    Step 6: Practice

    T: Now please fill in the blanks.

    Practice 1: How do we use search engines?

    Practice 2: Millie and her friends are using the search engines to find information. Look at what they want to find. Help them choose the best keywords.

    Step 7: Pair work

    T: Please make up a dialogue about how to use the Internet to find information with your partner.

    A: How can I find information on the Internet?

    B: You can use… They can help you find information…

    A: I want to find information about… Which keyword

       should I type in?

    B: I think … is the best key word.

    A: What should I do after that?

    B: The search engine will you …

    Step 8: Group work

    T: Work in groups of six and talk about the following questions: Which is the best way to look for information for you? And why?

    Tips:

    1. You should write a report and read it to your classmates.
    2. You should write at least 60 words.
    3. You can just write down some keywords when you are preparing for your report.
    4. You should work together to finish your report.
    5. You can use your dictionary when you need some words.
    6. You can begin your report like this:

    We think the ... is the best way to find information. We have ... reasons. Firstly... Secondly... And at last...

    (设计说明:该部分设计是为了综合考察学生对三种信息搜索方式的理解以及他们的语言听、说、读、写综合运用能力,同时培养学生使用英语词典的习惯、团队协作的能力、使用keywords的习惯等。)

    Step 9: Conclusion

    T: Who can tell me what we learn from this lesson?

    S: ......

    T: The world is becoming smaller and smaller because of the Internet!

    We have to work hard on English and computer science!

    So we can make a big difference in the future!

    1. Teaching reflection

    本节课是一节study skills课程,主题是finding information on the Internet。在之前的两个单元的学习中,已经涉及过dictionarylibrary两个信息查找方法,因此本课内容与之前两个单元内容紧密相关、一脉相承。

    本节课环节设置紧凑、合理、有序,线索清晰,让人觉得一目了然。每一个步骤的设计意图很明确,针对性很强,且各个步骤之间具有前后呼应的作用,让学生每一步走得都比较扎实。

    在课堂形式上,采用了多媒体教学,课堂上有视频帮助学生理解Internet这一概念,形象而又生动。播放了动听的音乐,让学生在轻松愉快的课堂氛围中收获了英语学习的乐趣和知识。

    借助于新理念英语阅读读本作为本节课导入的材料是本课的一大亮点,且该材料的使用比较频繁,使用得也恰到好处,十分巧妙。

    本节课的不知之处有:设计了pair workgroup work,虽然取得了较为理想的操练效果,但形式上有些老套,缺乏新意。因课堂时间有限,在某些小环节上来不及启发学生深入思考,如启发学生思考:What should we pay attention to when choosing keywords?

    总的来说,本节课还是取得了既定的教学目标,教学效果较为理想。
