A week ago, “Sports for Life”programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their children to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it.Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones.

Sport 1：Basketball

We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.

Sport 2：Gym

We will be using St Peter's Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6：00 pm. Second, it has lots of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping, jogging, outdoor aerobics (有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.

Sport 3：Hiking

Hiking will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2：30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/hour. Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

Sport 4：Swimming

The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10­minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings­on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (Le. 2: 45 pm to 3: 45 pm). Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit.The cost is $10 per visit.

Since commercial airlines took to the air, drinking and flying have tended to go hand in hand, with drink seeming to add the pleasing sense of a flight. But in the face of a rising tide of drink­fuelled violence, there are increasing calls from the public that drinking on flights should be restricted. The government is reviewing licensing laws at airports. It has yet to report, but World Duty Free (免税店) has announced its own decision — selling duty­free alcoholic drinks only in sealed (密封的) bags that, in theory, cannot easily be opened on the plane.

Rob Griggs, a spokesman for Airlines UK, welcomes the move of World Duty Free. However, he thinks more should be done by airports and the local authorities. “The places that sell alcohol should be subject to the same licensing conditions as elsewhere.” It would then be up to the local authority to decide whether drinking a little before boarding was acceptable.

Suzannah Robin, an alcohol and drug specialist at AlcoDigital, accepts Griggs' argument that most drinking is done in the terminal rather than on the plane. She advocates breathalysing (酒精测试) passengers who show signs of being drunk before they board. She says the Civil Aviation Authority has to take the lead. “They state that it's illegal to be drunk on board. They now need to decide what being drunk means. In the same way as you have a drink­drive limit, you would have a passenger limit, and as an authority they need to force the airport to have a method of checking passengers before they board.”

She wonders whether the relationship between drinking and flying will ever be broken completely. “I'd be surprised if drinking were banned on flights，” she says. “The events that happen become well­known quickly because of social media, but it's a tiny percentage of the population that causes these issues. The airlines benefit because they sell alcohol on board; the airports benefit because they have shops selling alcohol within their terminals; I can't see them wanting to back down. You're asking an entire nation to change what they do when they go on holiday because of the behaviour of a tiny minority. Being able to manage it would be better.”
