Robert Frost(18741963) was the statesman of American letters in the twentieth centurya rare national poet who was read and respected by both university professors and everyday citizens. In his lifeFrost won four Pulitzer Prizes for his works—more than any other poet in American history. His most famous poems include “The Road Not Taken” “Fire and Ice” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”Though he is widely readFrost is also one of the most misunderstood writers in the United States for the complexity of his poems.

Though born in CaliforniaFrost was brought up in New Englandwhere he is inseparably linked. After dropping out of Dartmouth College to seek his literary dreamhe remained upset for yearsproducing collections of works but failing to get enough of them published to make his efforts financially worthwhile. FinallyFrost left the United States in 1912 to see whether his work might be better received in London. It wasand in 1913 his first full collection was published in Great Britain. Fellow American poet Amy Lowell adored Frost's work and brought it back to the United Statespublicizing it insistently. Soon afterwards Frost's collections became bestsellersand he became a famous figure.

From then onFrost was on his way to the lifelong respect and recognition for his achievements in poetry. In 1961he was invited to read a poem for the presidential inauguration (总统就职典礼) of John FKennedy. He recited his poem“The Gift Outright” from memory at the ceremony. This was perhaps his last poetry reading in front of a wide national audience before his death in 1963.More importantlyFrost became the first poet to read a poem at a presidential inauguration.

Every year at this time, the peasants began their long religious journey to Geedleh, to visit the church there, and to pray for God's help. They walked or rode in wagons; they crowded the roads leading to the holy town, for Geedleh was famous in Poland as a place where God did miracles. The cool autumn days also brought many beggars to Geedleh. The peasants gave away more of their money on such a religious holiday as this. Some of the beggars were blind; some had no feet or arms. Some were very old and seemed like lost children looking for their mothers.

There was one among them who was called “the Mute Singer”. He was given this name because he could not speak. There was a time when he was able to sing, while playing his guitar. But he lost his voice. Now he played the guitar and sang, but no sounds came from his throat. His lips just moved with the music.

The Mute Singer was a tall, strangelooking man. His face and hands were brown. He had white hair and a white beardhe looked like one of the wise men you read about in the Bible.

Early one morning I saw the Mute Singer washing himself at the river. He smiled and touched the ground with his hand, meaning that I should sit down. Then, he pointed his finger straight up, to tell me that he had a surprise for me.

Suddenly, he put his hand into the water and rubbed two of his fingers together, making a strange sound, exactly like the sound of a frog. He did it many times, and then he lightly hit the top of the water, sending little waves across the water to the other side.

Suddenly, everything around us seemed to be moving. I could not believe that it was real. Thousands of frogs came racing toward us, jumping, and swimming ... under the water and on top of the water. I began to shake with excitement.

The frogs crowded around us. I could see their heads and eyes showing above the top of the water.

    One possible version

    Dear Peter,

How nice to receive your email and I am very glad to know that you show such a great interest in Chinese Tang Poems. Now I will try my best to help you. This is an ancient Chinese poem written by a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty, Meng Jiao. The poem tells about mother's love, which is deep and sincere. A son will be on a long journey. Before leaving, his mother sews and mends clothes for the boy carefully by the candlelight, afraid that he will come back home late. Mother is the warm spring sun while we are new green grass bathing in her golden rays. How can we repay such a great love?

Reading the poem, I feel my heart deeply moved. There is no greater love in the world than maternal love. I'm determined to work hard and try my best to make sure my mother has a happy life in the future.

    Yours

    Li Hua
