Pllack’s intellectual pwer and clarity f phrase are invaluable in describing the scientific evidence fr glbal warming, the ways in which it will affect the wrld, and the all -t-prbable cnsequences. Pllack is nt ne t brush awkward issues under the carpet. There is serius discussin abut uncertainties in climate science, and in particular, the cmputer mdels used t frecast future warming. Fr its frensic analysis (取证分析) and strng destructin f climate sceptic (怀疑论者) arguments alne, A Wrld Withut Ice is wrth keeping n a nearby shelf.
Sme readers may find Pllack's US-centric apprach ccasinally grating (刺耳的). On the subject f the bk itself, he writes: "Nature's best thermmeter (温度计), perhaps its mst sensitive and unambiguus indicatr f climate change, is ice. When ice gets sufficient warm, it melts. Ice asks n questins, presents n arguments, reads n newspapers, listens t n debates. It is nt burdened by idelgy and carries n plitical baggage as it crsses the threshld (门槛) frm slid t liquid. A Wrld Withut Ice is a call t arms. Debates abut which mitigatin (减缓) strategies might give us the best chances f reducing ur emissins miss the pint, Pllack says. Pllack's argument is attractive, persuasive and deeply upsetting, n matter the climate change tiredness that unavidably sets in as a cnsequence f endless media cverage f glbal warming.
