Are yu preparing fr a standardized English exam? D yu find the listening sectin particularly challenging?
The wrld f standardized examinatins t assess candidates’ abilities in the English language has grwn rapidly, especially in the last 30 years. Mst f these exams include a listening paper, in which a number f micr-skills are tested, such as listening fr detailed infrmatin, understanding an authr’s attitude and mre. Despite the different types f exams ut there, they all share many things. We can call them “skills”, as they can be applied while taking the listening test.
Yu need t exercise yur skills t make “educated guesses” althugh yu wn’t ever have super pwers. Mst standardized tests give yu sme time t read ahead. Yu must use this time wisely, as this is crucial t predicting as much as pssible a number f things. Yu shuld quickly ask yurself: What is their relatinship? Where are they? Why are they talking? What are their tnes?
By ding this, yu will be able t set the situatin and expect specific vcabulary which might be used in the cming listening materials. All this can be dne very quickly. If the passage cntains gaps that yu must fill ut, yu shuld try t predict the type f wrd r expressin (nun, adjective, verb, etc.). D nt try t read everything in detail; nly fcus n the key wrds. With practice, yu will be able t predict with a certain level f precisin. Even if yu find it difficult, trying t make a predictin will always help yu cncentrate n the task, thus making it a lt mre manageable and understandable.
Becming a successful candidate takes time and practice. Unless yu have had enugh practice in English, yu wn’t prbably be able t get yur desired scre. Keep in mind that mst standardized exams are mre abut skills than knwledge.
    35. The underlined term “educated guesses” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced with _____.
    A. effrts t achieve high scresB. quick decisins abut the chice
    C. better ptins using the same wrdsD. predictins with a certain level f precisin
    36. What shuld be stressed mre in a standardized listening test accrding t the passage?
    A. Skills.B. Vcabulary.C. Scres.D. Knwledge.
    37. Wh d yu think the passage is intended fr?
    A. Teachers.B. Managers.C. Speakers.D. Candidates.

GENETIC testing cannt tell teachers anything useful abut an individual pupil’s educatinal achievement. That is the cnclusin f a study that lked at hw well s-called plygenic scres fr educatin predict a persn’s educatinal achievements, based n a lng-term study f thusands f peple in the UK. “Sme peple with a very lw genetic scre are very high perfrmers at age 16. Sme are even in the tp 3 percent,” says Tim Mrris at the University f Bristl, UK.
And while Mrris expects the accuracy f plygenic scres fr educatinal achievements t imprve, he desn’t think they will ever be gd enugh t predict hw well an individual will d. Even relatively simple qualities such as height are influenced by thusands f genetic variants, each f which may nly have a tiny effect. It has been claimed that plygenic scres can be used t make useful predictins, such as a persn’s likelihd f develping varius diseases. One cmpany is even ffering embry screening (screening f an unbrn baby in the very stages f develpment) based n plygenic scres fr disease risk.
Sme researchers - ntably Rbert Plmin f King’s Cllege Lndn - think that schls shuld start using plygenic scres fr educatinal achievement. In mst cases, the scres may reflect qualities such as persistence as well as intelligence.
T assess the usefulness f plygenic scres in educatin, Mrris and his clleagues calculated them fr 8,000 peple in Bristl wh are part f a lng-term study knwn as the Children f the 90s. The participants’ genmes have been queued and their academic results are available t researchers. Amng ther things, the team fund a crrelatin f 0.4 between a persn’s plygenic scre and their exam results at age 16. But there wuld need t be a crrelatin f at least 0.8 t make useful predictins abut individuals, says Mrris.
Plmin, hwever, argues that the results supprt his pinin. “A crrelatin f 0.4 makes it the strngest plygenic predictr in the behaviural sciences,” says Plmin. “It’s s much strnger than a lt f ther things we base decisins n. S it’s a very big finding.”
Mrris says schls already have access t ther predictrs that are mre accurate, such as a pupil’s earlier test results. Lking at parents’ educatinal achievements is als a better predictr f a pupil’s academic results than studying their genme, his results shw. Prviding teachers with an extra predictr based n genetics wuld just cnfuse matters, says Mrris, and the cst cannt be justified.
    38. In paragraph 2, Mrris talks abut “height” in rder t tell readers that _____.
    A. sme qualities are hardly affected by any genetic variants
    B. sme qualities are influenced by thusands f genetic variants
    C. genetic scres are useful in predicting ne’s ptential diseases
    D. genetic scres can help children imprve their scres at schl
    39. Hw did Mrris prve the effect f plygenetic scres in educatin?
    A. By prviding ppsite examples.B. By explaining hw the genme wrks.
    C. By listing findings frm anther scientist.D. By presenting facts and data frm research.
    40. Accrding t Plmin, a crrelatin f 0.4 is reliable because it is _____.
    A. useful in telling yu hw intelligent and persistent children are
    B. useful in predicting peple wh might struggle academically
    C. strnger cmpared t ther factrs in behaviural sciences
    D. strngly crrelated t children’s academic achievements
    41. Mrris suggested that schls shuld _____.
    A. study every pupil’s genmes
    B. spend sme mney n genetic tests
    C. knw abut parents’ educatinal achievements
    D. prvide teachers with students’ genetic infrmatin
    【答案】38. B 39. D 40. C 41. C

Cnvincing smene t change their mind is really the prcess f cnvincing them t change their tribe (部落). If they abandn their beliefs, they run the risk f lsing scial ties. Yu can’t expect smene t change their mind if yu take away their cmmunity t.
The way t change peple’s minds is t becme friends with them, t cmbine them int yur tribe, t bring them int yur circle. Nw, they can change their beliefs withut the risk f being abandned scially.
The British philspher Alain de Bttn suggests that we simply share meals with thse wh disagree with us: “Sitting dwn at a table with a grup f strangers has the incmparable and dd benefit f making it a little mre difficult t hate them withut punishment. Prejudice and cnflict between grups f peple frm different natins r races feed ff abstractin. Hwever, during a meal, smething abut handing dishes arund, unflding napkins (餐巾纸) at the same mment, even asking a stranger t pass the salt makes us less likely t hld the belief that the utsiders wh wear unusual clthes and speak in distinctive accents deserve t be sent hme r attacked. Fr all the large-scale plitical slutins which have been prpsed t ease racial r cultural cnflict, there are few mre effective ways t prmte tlerance between suspicius neighburs than t frce them t eat supper tgether.”
Perhaps it is nt difference, but distance that prduces tribalism and unfriendliness. As prximity increases, s des understanding. I am reminded f Abraham Lincln’s qute, “I dn’t like that man. I must get t knw him better.” Facts dn’t change ur minds. Friendship des.
The Japanese writer Haruki Murakami nce wrte, “Always remember that t argue, and win, is t break dwn the reality f the persn yu are arguing against. It is painful t lse yur reality, s be kind, even if yu are right.”
When we are in the mment, we can easily frget that the gal is t cnnect with the ther side, cperate with them, befriend them, and integrate them int ur tribe. We are s caught up in winning that we frget abut cnnecting. It’s easy t spend yur energy labeling peple rather than wrking with them.
The wrd “kind (family and relatives)” riginated frm the wrd “kin (ld fashin f family and relatives).” When yu are kind t smene, it means yu are treating them like family. This, I think, is a gd methd fr actually changing smene’s mind. Develp a friendship. Share a meal. Gift a bk. Be kind first, be right later.
    42. Peple are likely t change their mind when they _____.
    A. change their beliefsB. are made friends with
    C. mve t a new cmmunityD. are given smewhere t g
    43. What des the underlined wrd “prximity” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Nearness.B. Actin.C. Cmmunicatin.D. Pliteness.
    44. The authr qutes frm Haruki Murakami t imply that _____.
    A. breaking dwn ne’s reality is easy
    B. kindness is mre imprtant than right
    C. arguing and winning are nt imprtant
    D. lsing ne’s identity is a painful prcess
    45. Accrding t the passage, sharing meals is effective in building cnnectins because it ____.
    A. pleases peple with different beliefs r accents
    B. makes peple fcus n eating rather than cnflicts
    C. brings benefits t the peple having dinner tgether
    D. prmtes understanding and tlerance amng peple

The wrld’s tp autmakers are increasingly ffering mre electric vehicle mdels. This grwth is expected t cntinue, with mre peple chsing t hit the rad with clean-running electric- pwered cars.
Envirnmentalists have praised the autmakers fr taking majr steps t limit harmful pllutants linked t wrldwide climate change. But electric vehicles are als knwn fr nt prducing anther kind f pllutin—nise. They run n batteries instead f fuel, and can perate in silence.
While many peple might cnsider this a gd thing, quiet cars can als cause prblems. The main danger is that peple walking in areas arund electric vehicles face a greater risk f being hit if they cannt hear the cars cming.
Gvernments in the United States and Eurpe have recgnized this prblem. S, they have set requirements fr manufacturers t add warning sunds t vehicles perating n electricity.
The f Transprtatin finalized its rules a year ag. The rules require electric and hybrid (混合能源) vehicles t be equipped with sme kind f warning sund when mving at speeds up t 30 kilmeters per hur. The rules are aimed at preventing injuries amng peple walking r riding bicycles and t prtect the blind.
S what kinds f sunds can we expect t hear frm the next generatin f electric vehicles? One f the easiest slutins wuld be fr carmakers t simply reprduce the sund a car wuld make if it actually did run n fuel. But many industry fficials believe this wuld be a mistake. They say this wuld nt supprt the electric vehicle’s true identity. It wuld als limit great pssibilities t link the car’s sund t a whle new image, which culd help increase sales.
Frank Welsch is head f technical develpment at Germany’s Vlkswagen. He said that finding the perfect sund mix is nt an easy prcess. “The electric vehicle sund is its identity,” he said. “It cannt be t annying. It cannt sund like anything we had in the past.”
An fficial frm Mercedes-Benz said the sund was designed t prvide a safe warning withut annying passengers inside the vehicle. He said the gal was t create a car that remains cmpletely quiet n the inside, but fills the sund requirements and supprts the mdel’s image n the utside.
It might seem strange t think that part f ur autmtive future is currently being develped in the same kinds f recrding studis used by musicians. But that is exactly what is happening.

There’s n dubt that real life can be frightening smetimes, r even dangerus t ne’s health. That is part f the reasn peple lve a gd fright in a haunted huse r mvie theater, which they can manage with little actual risk invlved.
“It’s a big thing fr peple t d smething they’re really afraid f, and cme ut n the ther side knwing, ‘I did it, I cntrlled it, I didn’t fall apart.’” said Glenn Sparks, a Purdue University prfessr wh has studied hw peple handle fear frm media images.

Sparks has bserved hw haunted huses and hrrr films are cmmn dating experiences fr yung cuples. He believes that males and females have expectatins f hw the ther shuld act. “If a male ges int ne f thse situatins and shws cntrl, females tend t find him mre attractive and he is admired mre,” he said. “Similarly, fr a female, the nrmal reactin is t shw fear. If a female desn’t shw that, the female becmes less attractive.”
It’s unusual fr fright alne t actually harm anyne, althugh DeMatteis remembered wrking at a haunted huse a few years ag where a man fainted(昏厥)inside. Dr. Cyril Wecht is unaware f any cases in which peple reacted t frightening images s strngly that they were actually scared t death. Hwever, he desn’t say it's impssible. It depends n the strength f the persn’s heart at the time he experiences fear. Wecht and thers say that a real-life fear is mre likely t affect ne’s health.
Recently, Theresa Streshenkff, 16, was n her third trip t the haunted huse even thugh she said she was ften scared. Her first time this year, the high schl student ran screaming frm a frightening figure in cstume. She still felt excitement ging thrugh again days later, even after she knew what t expect. “It isn’t suppsed t be fun t be scared, but if it’s frightening and yu knw it’s nt ging t hurt yu, it’s fun,” she explained.
    23. Why d peple lve t be scared in haunted huses r mvie theaters?
    A. Because being frightened is gd fr their health.
    B. Because they knw they aren’t taking real risks.
    C. Because these places are cnsidered dangerus.
    D. Because screaming makes them feel gd.

It’s the last year f high schl, and yung minds are turning their attentin t the thught f leaving hme. This seems a natural prgressin: parents have children; raise children; children graduate frm high schl and flee far frm parents, returning n weekends t eat hme-cked meals. But what happens when a child lses hme right befre leaving?
My family has lived in my hme since I was tw years ld. Seventeen years later, as I gt ready t leave fr university, my parents decided that it was time t mve. And naturally, I panicked. This was the place I used t run arund with friends; where I gt sunburned, chasing ants with sidewalk chalk; where I wuld sit fr hurs staring ut, making up sngs abut the passersby. If we were t mve, the new huse wuldn’t be my hme at all, just a strange, new place. After all, I’d be mving ut t g t university. But smething still wasn’t quite right.
And then it hit me: this is what the mve was really abut. I wasn’t cncerned with lsing my childhd bedrm. What was bthering me was that I’d sn be cmpletely respnsible fr myself.
    When I d g t university, I’ll g withut a safe place t cme hme t. Of curse I’ll have my family’s lve and supprt, but I’ll never be able t g hme again.
As graduating high-schl students, we’re all in lve with the idea f ging away and having wild adventures if we always have smeplace t return t. Leaving the family hme behind is really just grwing up withut a safety net. The mve frm ne place in life t anther is an imprtant change. Because it’s true, yu can never g hme. Nt really, hwever. Once yu’ve had an adventure r tw, yu will still have a nice place t cme back t fr a nice visit.

Why Des Walking thrugh Drways Make Us Frget?
We’ve all dne it. Run upstairs t get yur keys, but frget that it is them yu’re lking fr nce yu get t the bedrm. Open the fridge dr and reach fr the middle shelf nly t realize that we can't remember why we pened the fridge in the first place.
We can understand thse temprary mments f frgetfulness may be mre than just an annyance. Althugh these errrs can be embarrassing, they are als cmmn. It’s knwn as the “Drway Effect”, and it shws sme imprtant features f hw ur minds are rganized. Understanding this might help us accept thse temprary mments f frgetfulness as mre than just an annyance.
The Drway Effect ccurs when ur attentin mves between levels, and it reflects the trust in ur memries---even memries fr what we were abut t d---n the envirnment we’re in.
Imagine that we’re ging upstairs t get ur keys and frget that it is the keys we came fr as sn as we enter the bedrm. Psychlgically, what has happened is that the plan (“Keys!”) has been frgtten even in the middle f carrying ut a necessary part f the strategy (“G t bedrm!”). Prbably the plan itself is part f a larger plan (“Get ready t leave the huse!”), which is part f plans n a wider and wider field (“G t wrk!”, “Keep my jb!”, “Be a prductive and respnsible citizen”, r whatever). Each field requires attentin at sme pint. Smewhere in cntrlling the cmplex levels the need fr keys suddenly cmes int mind.
Our memries, even fr ur gals, are planted in webs f cnnectins. That can be the physical envirnment in which we frm them, which is why revisiting ur childhd hme can bring back a fld f previusly frgtten memries, r it can be the mental envirnment---the set f things we were just thinking abut when that thing suddenly cmes int mind.
The Drway Effect ccurs because we change bth the physical and mental envirnments, mving t a different rm and thinking abut different things. That hurriedly thught-up gal, which was prbably nly ne plate amng the many we’re trying t spin(旋转), gets frgtten when the cntext changes.

    B. t intrduce the tpic
    C. t remind us f ur weak memry
    D. t call attentin t the danger f frgetfulness

    A. They can be understd and accepted.
    B. They are imprtant features f ur minds.
    C. They shw that ur minds are ut f rder.
    D. They are embarrassing and shuld be avided.
    35. Which f the fllwing memries was frmed in the physical envirnment?
    A. A ty helps yu remember a childhd friend.
    B. When yu sing a sng, yu think f a frmer classmate.
    C. Yu are playing basketball when yu remember yur hmewrk.
    D. While visiting yur primary schl, yu recall a frgtten memry.
Hw is the passage mainly develped?
    A. By prviding examples.
    B. By making cmparisns.
    C. By fllwing the rder f time.
    D. By fllwing the rder f space.
    26. C 27. D 28. C 29. B 30. B 31. A

We were extremely pr. We had n huse, n fd. We had nthing. My parents had many prblems. My family was always n the edge f vilence. It was unbelievably stressful. There wasn't a mment t relax during my entire childhd.
I wanted t be an artist when I was abut six. But my family was s pr that I gt kncked ff track by the wrking-class educatinal system and the envirnment I was living in. I became a street gang member, causing truble and fighting against ther grups.
Being a teenager with vivid imaginatin, a strng sense f adventure and sme degree f curage, it was attractive t steal cars, drive them away, and get chased by the plice.
If I had nthing t d, I wuld g t evening schl t learn painting. I tried t enter ne f thse art schls, but I was rejected by 11 schls when they heard I had been a street gang member. When I was nt accepted, I cried a lt.

I culd nt affrd t live. I was s defeated. I thught maybe I shuld g smewhere in the middle f America and find a new jb, have a car and a huse with a garage. That lasted abut an hur, but it was such a stressful experience.
Nw I'm famus, and I gt a lt f my wrks sld at a pretty high price. I think befre ne is famus, ne has t be infamus, and befre ne is accepted, ne has t be rejected. Painting desn't explain itself. Painting is nt an explanatin. Painting desn't try t teach. Painting is a bdy f experiences. Painting is called a hard business. One has t have firm beliefs. And I d. One has t have curage t be an artist because ne has gt t put up with all the insults ne has t suffer as an artist. S ne has t persist, in ther wrds, t have a little hpe.

A new study has fund that scial media culd be affecting the sleep f yung adults. The study is a prject f researchers at the University f Pittsburgh's Schl f Medicine. They fund that yung peple wh ften use scial media are mre likely t suffer frm sleep disrders than thse wh use scial media less.
The researchers say dctrs shuld ask yung adults abut their use f scial media when treating sleep issues. "This is ne f the first pieces f evidence that scial media use really can affect yur sleep," said Jessica C. Levensn. She is a pstdctral researcher in the university's Department f Psychiatry. She was the lead authr f a reprt n the study. The researchers set ut t examine the cnnectin between scial media use and sleep amng yung adults.

On average, members f the study grup used scial media sites ne hur a day. They als visited varius scial media accunts 30 times per week. And thse wh spent the mst time n scial media were tw times as likely t suffer frm sleep disturbances.

Researchers say scial media can influence sleep patterns in a number f ways. Peple can lse sleep by staying up t late lking at scial media. Sensitive issues argued abut n scial media can cause "emtinal, cgnitive r physilgical" excitement. Using an electrnic device can disturb a bdy's natural sleep rhythms because f the light cming frm cell phnes r cmputer screens. The researchers nte that in sme cases, yung adults wh have a hard time sleeping may use scial media t help them fall asleep.
"It als may be that bth f these hyptheses (假定) are true," says Brian A. Primack. He is directr f the Center fr Research n Media, Technlgy and Health. He is als the study's senir authr. Primack says, "Difficult sleeping may lead t increased use f scial media, which may in turn lead t mre prblems sleeping. This cycle may be particularly prblematic with scial media. Many frms f scial media invlve interactive screen time that is stimulating (刺激) and rewarding and, fr thse reasns, can keep yu awake."
    34. Frm the results f the questinnaire, wh are mre likely t have a sleep prblem?

    B. The participants visiting scial media frequently.
