My biggest regret f 2023 was the relatinship t my smartphne. I spent the equal f January, February and March lking at that tiny screen. While sme f that time was necessary fr wrk, r staying cnnected with family, I became glued t it. This habit started t make me feel uneasy.
S, in December, I made a big change. I swapped my expensive iPhne fr a basic flip phne (翻盖手机), which nly cst $108. This decisin was met with disbelief, especially frm my seven-year-ld daughter wh culdn’t understand why I chse such a device. Hwever, I was determined t reduce my screen time and take back cntrl f my life.
Making the switch was neither easy nr fast. I had t adjust t its limited functins and learn t live withut the cnvenience f having everything at my fingertips. There were mments when I felt frustrated, like when I culdn’t use a smartphne app t charge my electric car r navigate withut Ggle Maps. Despite these challenges, I survived, and even prgressed during the mnth.
It was a relief t discnnect my brain frm the internet regularly and fr hurs at a time. I read fur bks. I even did a magic” jigsaw puzzle. After tw weeks, I nticed I’d lst my thumb twitch”— physical desire t check my phne in the mrning, at red lights, waiting fr an elevatr r at any ther mment when my mind had a brief pprtunity t wander.
“Our health is struggling against many f these services and cmpanies that are cmpeting fr ur time and ur energy and ur attentin,” said Matthew Buman, a prfessr f mvement sciences at Arizna State University. I tld him abut my wn strategy —the flip phne. He said it prbably made my mind feel mre free and feel as if I had mre time bth true), but that in ur sciety, it’s hard t maintain that in the lng term.”

It is nw pssible t generate fake but realistic cntent with little mre than the click f a muse. This can be fun: a TikTk accunt n which an artificial Tm Cruise wearing a purple rbe sings Tiny Dancer” Paris Hiltn hlding a ty dg has attracted 5.1 millin fllwers. Hwever, this technlgy als causes challenges. Cheaters can cpy lved nes’ vices with just ten secnds, and AI-generated celebrities advertise questinable prducts nline. Fake vides f pliticians are als spreading rapidly.
The fundamental prblem is an ld ne. Frm the printing press t the internet, new technlgies have ften made it easier t spread untruths r pretend t be the trustwrthy. While humans have traditinally relied n shrtcuts t detect fakes, such as spelling mistakes r strangely rendered (渲染的) hands in I-generated images, these signs are becming less reliable as AI cntinues t imprve. The arms race between generating and detecting fakes currently favrs the frmer, and it seems that eventually, AI mdels will be able t prduce perfect fakes.
This rapid advancement in AI technlgy raises serius cncerns. Fr example, it culd lead t a wrld where any phtgraph f a persn can be used fr blackmail (敲诈). Additinally, anyne culd create a vide f a plitical leader annuncing a nuclear first strike, causing widespread panic.
Despite these awful pssibilities, scieties will adapt t the rise f fake cntent. Peple will learn t distrust images, audi, r vide as prf f events, similar t hw they view drawings. Instead, the fcus will shift t identifying the surce f cntent, with reliable surces becming increasingly imprtant.
It may sund strange, but this was true fr mst f histry. While AI technlgy presents significant challenges, it is nt the end f the marketplace f ideas. Over time, the fakes that rise will mstly be the funny nes.
    28. What is the main cncern ver the ability f AI t generate realistic fake cntent?
    A. It makes peple pretend t be smene else.
    B. It enables cheaters t prmte fake prducts nline.
    C. It causes arms race between generating and detecting fakes.
    D. It makes it difficult t distinguish the real cntent frm the fake.
    29. What are peple advised t fcus n when ensuring the reliability f cntent?
    A. Its surce.B. Its visual quality.C. Its ppularity.D. Its emtinal impact.
    30. What des the authr cnvey in the last paragraph?
    A. Funny fakes will be the nly ne that rise in the future.
    B. The rise f fakes cntent will nt des try the exchange f ideas.
    C. Peple will find it necessary t distinguish AI-made cntent frm reality.
    D. Peple will n lnger trust any frm f media wing t the fld f fakes.
    31. What is the best title fr the text?

T Swedes, the scent f surströmming (鲱鱼罐头) is pleasant, but t mst thers, it’s sickening. This cntrast highlights the rle f culture in shaping ur perceptins (见解) f scent. Hwever, researchers nw suggest that bi lgy might play a mre significant rle than previusly thught.
Artin Arshamian, a neurscientist at the Karlinska Institute in Sweden, and Asifa Majid, a psychlgist at the University f Oxfrd, nticed frm their wn previus wrk that peple frm different cultures described smells differently. They als knew frm past experiments by ther researchers that culture was imprtant in determining which srts f faces peple fund beautiful. Thus, they expected t see a similar phenmenn with smells.
The researchers cnducted a study invlving nine diverse grups f peple, including hunter-gatherers in Mexic, farmers in Ecuadr, and residents f cities like Mexic City and Bangkk. They were presented with ten smells, ranging frm isvaleric acid t vanilla extract, and asked t rate them accrding t pleasantness. The results shwed high cnsistency acrss cultures, with isvaleric acid universally disliked and vanilla extract mstly enjyed.
Interestingly, the chemical cmpsitin f the smells accunted fr 41% f the reactins, while cultural factrs nly explained 6%. It is quite different in the case f visual perceptin f faces, where a persn’s culture makes up 50% f the explanatin fr which faces they find beautiful. Meanwhile, the researchers identified an “eye f the behlder” effect in ur perceptins f scent. This phenmenn, thugh less bvius than in visual perceptin, represents the persnal preferences that are shaped by influences utside individual culture, accunting fr 54% f the differences in which smells peple liked.
This study suggests that ur sense f smell may be mre influenced by bilgical factrs than cultural nes. It challenges the idea that culture alne determines what we find pleasant r unpleasant and pens up new ways f explring the bilgical basis f ur senses.
    32. What is the initial purpse f the research?
    A. T explre hw culture affects ur sense f smell.
    B. T prve all peple enjy the scent f surströmming.
    C. T examine gegraphy plays a rle in scent perceptin.
    D. T cnfirm bilgy has an influence n scent perceptin.
    33. Hw did the researchers cnduct the research?
    A. By making questinnaire surveys.B. By recrding participants’ reactins.
    C. By cmparing cultural backgrunds.D. By referring t previus study reprts.
    34. The underlined “eye f the behlder” effect mentined in the research refers t ________.
    A. the standard f beauty acrss different cultures
    B. the rle f culture in shaping ur sense f smell
    C. the impact f persnal preferences n scent perceptin
    D. the influence f utside factrs n ur visual preference
    35. What can be inferred frm the participants’ reactins t isvaleric acid?
    A. They were familiar with isvaleric acid befrehand.
    B. They hated isvaleric acid all due t its unpleasant smell.
    C. Their reactins t the scent f isvaleric acid varied amng cultures.
    D. Their dislike fr isvaleric acid was based mre n bilgical factrs.
