PAUL HEMINGTON, 57, is the Assistant Operatins Manager at Cheddar Grge(切达峡谷) and Caves
I mved t SOMERSET mainly fr my family. My daughter was getting married and I didn’t want t live six hurs away, s we made the mve. Once we mved, we were made unneeded and it was a mad race t get wrk. I ended up at here at Cheddar Grge and Caves.

A frest in Staffrdshire (in the UK) transfrmed int a hi-tech labratry. Researchers here are investigating hw the trees use carbn, and it’s difficult t find ut. In an unusual experiment, extra carbn dixide is piped t the trees, t create the kind f atmspheric cnditins expected in the middle f the century. And instruments measure hw the frest reacts.
The scientist in charge says there’s still a lt t learn. And he wrries that gvernments and cmpanies are rushing t plant trees as an easy answer t climate change. “If yu try and use trees t tidy up the mess that we’re making thrugh emissins, yu are putting thse trees int a very rapidly changing climate and they will struggle t adapt,” said Prfessr Rb MacKenzie, University f Birmingham.
This device tracks the mvement f carbn dixide. In a healthy frest, the gas is nt nly absrbed by the trees but sme is released as well. What scientists here are finding ut is the way carbn flws int a frest and ut f it is a lt mre cmplicated than yu might think. S, if mass tree planting is meant t be a slutin t tackling climate change, the trees are ging t have t be mnitred and cared fr, ver nt just decades, but may be centuries as well.
Of all the challenges, the task f planting is the simplest. Shelby Barber frm Canada can d an amazing 4,000 trees in a day. “Peple talking abut planting millins billins f trees arund the wrld. Is it pssible d yu think, physically?” asked BBC.
“It’s definitely pssible with the right amunt f peple, the right grup f peple. I’ve persnally, in three years, planted just ver half a millin trees.” said Prfessr Rb MacKenzie.
Once planted, the trees need t survive, and experts are mixing different types t minimize the risk f disease. “It’s a bit like making sure yu dn’t put all yur eggs in ne basket, yu’re spreading ut yur risk. And then if ne part f that wdland fails, fr whatever reasn, it gets a disease r it can’t tlerate future climatic cnditins, there are ther parts f the frest that are healthy and able t fill in thse gaps.” said Eleanr Tew f Frestry England.
Suddenly there’s mmentum t plant trees n a scale never seen befre. S what matters is ding it in a way that ensures the frests thrive — s they really d help with climate change.
    63. Why is extra carbn dixide piped t the trees in the experiment?
    A. T predict the future atmspheric cnditins.
    B. T imitate the pssible air cnditin in the future.
    C. T create an instrument t measure atmspheric cnditins.
    D. T investigate the quality f air cnditin in the future.
64.The underlined wrd “sme” in the secnd paragraph refers t __________.
    A. xygenB. carbn dixideC. messD. purified gas
    65. What will Eleanr Tew suggest cncerning the survival f the frest?
    A. Minimizing the area f the wdland.
    B. Studying future climatic cnditins.
    C. Planting different types f trees.
    D. Aviding mixing different species.
    66. Which statement cncerning mass tree planting will Prfessr Rb Mackenzie mstly likely agree with?
    A. It shuld be advcated in terms f efficiency and cnvenience.
    B. It is the mst effective slutin t fighting climate changes.
    C. It will d mre harm than gd t the health f the envirnment.
    D. It needs t be studied further as a measure against climate change.
    Sectin C
Directins: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a prper sentence given in the bx. Each sentence can be used nly nce. Nte that there are tw mre sentences than yu need.
    The Fight against Fast Furniture
Fast furniture is a term that refers t furniture that is prduced cheaply and quickly. These items are ften bad fr the envirnment because they are made frm materials that break easily and need t be replaced ften. (67) ____________________
T help prtect the envirnment, a mvement t mve away frm fast furniture has begun. Many cmpanies are jining the fight by finding cleaner ways t manufacture furniture. Fr example, IKEA has agreed t switch t using renewable r recycled materials fr their furniture by the year 2030. (68) ____________________
There is als a push t encurage shppers t buy mre used furniture fr their hmes. Small businesses that help transfrm ld chairs and sfas int cmpletely new prducts have even ppped up recently. At the end f the day, cnsumers will play the mst imprtant rle in the fight t end fast furniture. Shppers shuld try t think mre abut the lng term when preparing t purchase new furniture. They shuld stay away frm furniture that is made frm cheap materials like fiberbard r plastic because they will ften fall apart after a few years. (69) ____________________
A much better alternative is furniture made frm real wd because it wn’t break as easily. If wd furniture is damaged, it can ften be repaired t last lnger. High-quality metals are anther gd material, as they are durable. If the furniture is n lnger fit fr use, these metals can still be recycled and used t make new prducts.
    (70) ____________________ S, the next time yu buy furniture, think abut whether it’s smething that will last a lng time r it’s just fast furniture that will break sn and g int the trash.
    IV. Summary Writing
Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Summarize the main idea and the main pint(s) f the passage in n mre than 60 wrds. Use yur wn wrds as far as pssible.
    Digital Nmads (游牧人)
Hw wuld yu like t answer yur wrk emails frm a beachfrnt café in Thailand r a cffee shp in Prtugal? If that appeals t yu, being a digital nmad might be fr yu. Digital nmads can literally wrk frm anywhere as their jbs are nline. Digital nmads rely n prtable devices with wireless Internet capabilities such as laptps, tablets and smartphnes. Typically, they wrk frm cffee shps, restaurants, c-wrking spaces, apartments r internet cafés — places with an Internet cnnectin.
Wrldwide, statistics shw the number f digital nmads hit 35 millin in 2021. S what is it that makes the lifestyle f digital nmads s fascinating? First and fremst, digital nmads get t live in different cuntries and cultures while they wrk, prviding them with pprtunities t have adventures and experience new things. These flks have als fund the mst flexible means f nline incmes, allwing them t head ut at a mment’ ntice and g where they please. “I’m free,” says Nimisha Walji, “I can g where the wind takes me and live any place I chse! If I feel like a change, I can pursue that in a matter f days, smetimes hurs.”
Yu may think that being a digital nmad is all sunshine and rainbws. It is nt necessarily s. Jb finding is ne f the hardest tasks fr the digital nmad, given that they have n permanent hme, n ffice address, and n ne knws them. T apply fr a jb, they need t find the emplyer and persuade him t hire them. Mst f the emplyers hire frm their wn city, and that’s why it’s s hard fr a nmad t find a jb. Access t stable Wi-Fi and adequate wrkspace can be difficult. If smene struggles t stay fcused at hme, there can’t be a wrse place than a fascinating hliday lcatin. Few peple can manage t be prductive faced with the temptatins and distractins. It seems that living the life f a digital nmad isn’t fr everyne.

Wildfires are made pssible by ht, dry weather cnditins as well as a supply f dead vegetatin that serves as fuel. As wildfires damage increasingly large areas f the planet each year, gats may ffer a way f reducing the risk. Gats are being used fr landscape management in a number f places arund the wrld.
Gats have a very tugh digestive system. Many kinds f vegetatin that are pisnus t ther animals can be easily eaten by gats. It’s nt just fully-grwn plants that gats are able t deal with: any seeds that pass thrugh a gat will nt grw. Human clearance teams have t wrry abut getting t hard-t-reach vegetatin spts; well, gats dn’t. They are skilled muntain climbers and when standing n their rear legs, can reach up t tw metres t eat shrubs and grass that humans wuld struggle t reach. Because f this, using gats can reduce bth the pssibility f wrkplace accidents and the amunt f mney spent n fire prtectin measures. Gats have been fund t clear sme areas f land fr a third f the price f human vegetatin cntrl teams.
    Questins:
    11. What enables gats t easily eat vegetatin pisnus t ther animals? (B)
    12. Hw can gats help fight the wildfires? (A)
    13. In what tw aspects d gats have clear advantages ver human clearance teams? (A)
Questins 14 thrugh 16 are based n the fllwing passage.
A new study has fund that peple are mre likely t remember cmplicated maths multiplicatins if they learn them just befre bedtime. Yu might think it’s better t study sums when yur mind is fresh in the mrning but researchers say that a gd sleep helps t nail the facts in yur brain.
The study asked 184 adults in the UK, aged frm 18 t 40, t learn cmplicated sums by heart. The sums multiplied numbers frm 22 t 33 by six, seven, eight and nine –fr example, 25 times eight. The researchers wanted t test hw quickly each adult culd remember the answer, rather than wrk it ut frm scratch.
The vlunteers first had t learn the answers befre bed, between 8pm and 10.45pm, and they were tested the next mrning. A week later, they were asked t learn answers when they wke up, between 7.30 and 10am. They were tested at the end f the day. In bth experiments, the vlunteers had abut 10 hurs between learning the sums and had t take the tests. Thse wh learned sums befre bed remembered them better, scring an average f 20.7 ut f 28; the mrning learners nly scred 18.5.
It’s already knwn that sleep can help t strengthen memries but mst research has tested hw well peple learn wrds. This study shws that the mind als saks up numbers when humans are asleep.
    Questins:
    14. What were the vlunteers asked t d in the study? (B)
    15. Wh scred higher in the test? (D)

W: OK, I’ll see what I can d. Nw, abut the trip, culd yu rganize any talks r guides fr the children?

Q What’s the best way t keep track f yur characters in a nvel?
    Amanda Rse, via email
A I’m nt sure what the best way is, but here are sme f the methds I use. Mst f my recrds are n paper. I have a huge flder, and in it are the fllwing:
    * Character sheets – ne A4 sheet fr each character with all their details: name; age; address; physical descriptin; persnality type…
    * Dialgue recrds – an extra page where I nte their favrite wrds and dialgues.
    * Phtgraphs – I use phts cut frm magazines fr inspiratins as t what they lk like.
I’m als a big fan f spreadsheets. I create ne that has the name, date f birth and age f my characters at any given time in the nvel – r nvels if it’s a series. This is particularly helpful fr cntrlling timelines, as I nly need t change ne date and the rest are set up t update autmatically.
I als use a spreadsheet fr keeping track f the plt s I knw what happens t each character in each chapter. I create the spreadsheet befre I start and fill it in as I g. It’s fr tracking nt pltting, but it culd be used fr that if yu pltted what happens in each chapter.
    Hpe this helps, Amanda.
Q Shuld I use single qutes r duble qutes fr dialgue?
    Tania Yeatman, Wimbrne
A It desn’t matter! Usually it’s a matter f huse style, s if yu are aiming at a specific publicatin, check t see what their style is fr publicatin and cpy that. If yu dn’t knw the huse style then the imprtant thing is t be cnsistent. The same applies t qutes frm interviewees and experts in yur articles.
