It's a knwn fact that emissins(排放物) frm gas-pwered vehicles are harming the atmsphere. In respnse t this, Prsche, the German sprts car cmpany, began prducing e-fuels at a pilt plant in Chile last year. Currently, the fuel will be used nly in sprts cars at Prsche's perfrmance and experience centers.
E-fuels are made by passing electricity thrugh water. The electricity separates the hydrgen and xygen frm water. The hydrgen is then mixed with CO₂ t prduce a liquid e-fuel, which can be prduced using many renewable energy surces, such as slar and wind pwer. E-fuels fllw the chemical structure f gasline, making it pssible fr gas-pwered cars t run n e-fuels almst withut any change.
E-fuels can help ease the transfrm away frm gas-pwered cars, fr thse wh may nt be able t affrd electric vehicles (EV). It will als help t reduce waste by keeping gas-pwered cars in service, instead f thrwing them away prematurely. Additinally, the use f e-fuels will nt require new facility t be built unlike EVs. Existing gas statins and cars will be able t stay in use, which is already a big saving.
Despite the many benefits, pinins differ n whether e-fuels are truly ec-friendly. E-fuels are widely said t be nearly carbn neutral(碳中和), althugh an independent study indicates that e-fuels release the same amunt f CO₂ as gasline. Since e-fuels are still being develped and tested, their true impacts are still unknwn. Meanwhile, e-fuels are very expensive t prduce, partly due t energy lss during prductin. Unfrtunately, nly abut half f the energy used in prducing e-fuels is actually transfrmed int fuel. Additinally, nly abut 16% f the energy used in e-fuel prductin is actually used t pwer the car. Whereas, abut 70% f energy is preserved when pwering an EV. Even thugh the use f e-fuels will preserve existing facility, it will still take time and mney t integrate it int everyday life. Currently, the price f e-fuels is nearly duble the cst f regular fuel.
E-fuels are still a wrk in prgress. Thugh pinins are divided n e-fuels, with mre testing and develpment, they have been cnsidered anther way t help fight against the climate crisis. "There are currently mre than 1.3 billin vehicles with cmbustin(内燃)engines wrldwide. Many f these will be n the rads fr decades t cme, and e-fuels ffer the wners f existing cars a nearly carbn-neutral alternative. With the e-fuels pilt plant, Prsche is playing a leading rle in this develpment," said Michael Steiner, member f the Executive Bard fr Develpment and Research at Prsche AG.
    28. What can we learn frm this passage?
    A. E-fuels release n CO₂.
    B. E-fuels were tested in Germany at first.
    C. E-fuels are applicable t gas-pwered cars.
    D. E-fuels need t be mixed with CO₂ in actual use.
    29. The authr qutes Michael Steiner mainly t ______.
    A. draw a cnclusin'. B. present an pinin
    C. further a discussin D. prvide a slutin
    30. What is the authr's attitude twards e-fuels?
    A. Psitive. B. Dismissive. C. Dubtful. D. Objective.
    D
On Feb.21, fur students were standing n the side f Pacific Cast Highway in Malibu when a driver ging 110 miles per hur lst cntrl f his car and it crashed int the parked vehicles.12 peple were killed at the scene, including 2 drivers.
This kind f traffic death shuldn't be called an accident. In Ls Angeles, we seem t have accepted cnstant carnage(屠杀) in ur streets in exchange fr maximizing driver speed and cnvenience. The fficial respnses t prven traffic dangers are mere gestures, if even that.
Ls Angeles is a uniquely deadly city with a death rate that is fur times the natinal average. Unsurprisingly, it's als a city that has been designed with ne thing in mind: a cncept called level f service, which grades streets n hw well they serve thse in autmbiles. T many Angelens, that makes sense—t design ur streets fr car traffic, which is the way many get arund the city. Unfrtunately, we dn't recgnize that there's a trade-ff. We can either have streets bettered fr free-flwing traffic, r we can design streets fr peple t mve arund safely utside f cars.
City leaders cnsistently chse fr the easy but deadly ptin. In ne recent example, a resident asked the city's Department f Transprtatin t blck drivers frm using Cchran Avenue at Venice Bulevard as a cut-thrugh street, as they were speeding thrugh a quiet residential neighburhd. The department respnded by suggesting a "speed awareness campaign" in which neighburs put up yard signs urging drivers t slw dwn.
Peple dn't drive based n signage, but they drive n the design f the street. The trunk rads f Ls Angeles such as Venice Bulevard all need t be revised s that peple are priritized ver cars. This wuld include narrwing travel lanes(道), building bike lanes, and banning right turns at red lights. These measures wuld make drivers feel like they're in a city and nt n a highway. A recent Jhn Hpkins study says this wuld have substantial safety benefits.
With mre than 7,500 miles f streets in the city f Ls Angeles, they wn't all be rebuilt anytime sn. But with each rad cnstructin prject, r each crash, we shuld be revising streets t make them safer fr all rad users.
The slutin t traffic jam isn't t make mre space fr cars. It's t design the streets t be safe enugh fr alternatives such as biking, walking and mass transit, especially fr the 50% f trips daily in Ls Angeles that are less than three miles. The slutin t prtecting peple dining utdrs isn't crash barriers. It's a street design that frces drivers t g slwly. The prblem is carnage in the streets, and we knw the slutins.
    31. Why shuld the traffic death in Ls Angeles be called“cnstant carnage”?
    A. The traffic accidents happen quite ften.
    B. T many peple are killed in the traffic accidents.
    C. The drivers' speeding is t blame fr the traffic death.
    D. City leaders' cnsistent chice cntributes t the traffic death.
    32. What des the wrd "trade-ff" underlined in Paragraph 3 mst prbably mean?
    A. Balance. B. Guideline. C. Cnflict. D. Reslutin.
    33. Accrding t the passage, which is a likely slutin t the traffic prblem?
    A. T widen travel lanes. B. T add mre crsswalks.
    C. T arrange mre traffic plice. D. T punish speeding drivers.
    34. Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?
    A. Drivers first r walkers first? B. Traffic death r cnstant carnage?
    C. Mre warning signs r safer designs? D. Mre narrw lanes r speedy highways?

Dietary "self-mnitring" is a cmmn strategy. It invlves recrding what they cnsume, and hw much. The thery is that when thinking f what yu put in yur bdy, yu'll make healthier decisins. 36 There's n dubt that dietary self-mnitring has been shwn t help lse weight. Hwever, nt much is knwn abut hw lng this takes r hw ften it shuld be dne.
37 Recently, researchers studied bese individuals in therwise gd health wh participated in a 24-week weight cntrl prgram... They recrded their daily dietary intake using an nline prgram. The findings demnstrated that peple wh cntinued t recrd their fd intake daily fr 24 weeks lst mre weight cmpared t thse wh quit nting their intake. Peple wh lst at least 10% f their weight recrded their fd intake abut 3 times a day. 38 Researchers nted peple might have greater success with weight lss if they recrded their dietary intake abut three times a day, rather than recrding all f their meals in ne sitting.
A gd principle t fllw may be "write when yu bite". Dietary self-mnitring can be perfrmed in different ways—using an nline prgram, using a pencil r using smart-phne applicatins. 39
    A. Can it really be that easy?
    B. It is imprtant t find what wrks fr yu.
    C. Thus, lng-term weight lss takes time and effrt.

Marine's inspiratin came frm a fire that destryed a restaurant in her neighburhd during the spring f 2023. "I had never really experienced smething like that befre," she tld The Washingtn Pst abut the early mrning fire, which started in the kitchen. "They had smke detecting device(设备), and yet it still burned dwn."
After she studied fire statistics, Marine spent ver half a year develping a fire detectin system that culd have prevented the fire. Unlike traditinal smke detectrs that sense active fires frm the smke in the air, Marine's thermal(热的) imaging device is designed t stp fires frm ccurring.
With a thermal camera and a tiny cmputer, the device detects when a heat surce has been left unattended fr ten minutes and sends a text message warning. The hardest part was the prgramming. "I had tw designs, and my first design cmpletely failed. It was a really big challenge I had t g thrugh," she said. The final device utperfrms traditinal smke detectrs in speed and accuracy. Marine wants t bring the csts dwn t make it even mre cmmn than hardwired smke detectrs.
"The tp winners have , exhibited bundless pssibility," Maya Franklin, president f Sciety fr Science, said in the press release. "Their remarkable research nt nly reflects their talent but als puts a stepping stne t an exciting new future."
    40. What design wn Marine Gill the tp award in the SJIC?
    41. Frm where did Marine draw inspiratin fr the design?
    42. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
Unlike traditinal smke detectrs, Marine's thermal imaging device is designed t sense active fires frm the smke in the air.
