Are you the type to run before breakfast in the morning? Working out on an empty stomach won't hurt you—and it may actually help depending on your goal.
Exercising before eating comes with the risk of being light-headed due to low blood sugar. You might feel tired or uneasy, and won't be able to work out as energetically as you would have. A light amount of food is important for older adults over 55—especially in the morning. But if your primary exercise goal is weight loss, exercising on an empty stomach may come with some promising benefits. There's some research to support the idea that working out in a fasted (禁食) state can burn more fat than exercising in a fed state.
Working out on an empty stomach, however, may not prove true for everyone. "Some people, young and in amazing physical shape, suggest fasted exercise," says Douglas Paddon-Jones, a muscle physiology (生理学) researcher of aging and health. "They have no health matters, and what they're eating is super-high quality and carefully regulated." On the other hand, working out in a fasted state without proper planning or professional management may run the risk of unhealthy body changes.
For people who aren't athletes, having food before a workout may be the best way to get the most fat-burning benefit. "You don't want to fill up; you just want to give your body a burst of energy to power your training period. After you exercise, drink some water—but wait 60 to 90 minutes before eating." Says Shivani Sahni, director of the nutrition (营养) program at Harvard University's Institute for Aging Research. "You're trying to take advantage of your promoted metabolic rate (代谢速率) after exercise, so if you can go an hour or an hour and a half without eating, you'll maximize (最大化) the fat-burning response," says she.
1.Who should have a little food before morning exercise?
    A.Seniors over fifty-five. B.Professional athletes.
    C.Adults over twenty-five. D.Regular runners.
2.Why do some people suggest fasted exercise?
A.To appear younger. B.To become athletic.
C.To achieve excitement. D.To burn fat at most.
3.How should young and healthy people exercise according to Douglas Paddon-Jones?
A.Improve diet quality. B.Drink water after exercise.
C.Exercise without eating. D.Do exercise regularly.
4.The author advises readers to be________when working out in a fasted state.
    A.strict B.careful C.confident D.calm

(2021·福建·长汀县新桥中学高一期中)Since graduating from middle school, this year's new 9th-grade class is adapting to (适应) the challenges of high school, a difficult process (过程) for many students. Some of the challenges the students must get used to are the increasing difficulty of schoolwork, the amount of homework, and the change in the grading system among other things.
“It's a bit harder than middle school, but that is to be expected from every ongoing year,” David Palacios, 9th-grade student, said.
Adaptation is also influenced by stories the freshmen hear before entering. These stories create a negative (消极的) idea of high school, as they are usually bad stories about classes, teachers, or other topics.
“Stories I've heard of high school are exaggerated (夸张的),” Palacios said.
The school is fighting against student fear by providing information about high school, even before they enter. This year, the 9th-grade class entered school on August 8, one day earlier than other high school students. This was done to help the freshmen by solving any doubts they could have.
“In general, they adapt well, because since middle school they have been given some information on what high school is,” Ana Isabel Garcia, high school advisor, said.
The changes faced in 9th grade are more challenging than those found in middle school. However, after experiencing the first two months of 9th grade, many 9th graders agree that 9th grade is not as hard as they thought it would be.
“It's not that different from middle school,” Palacios said.
High school is harder than other grades as it's the final step students take before they enter the real world. Students must see the important role high school plays as it teaches them many skills that will help them improve their future.
“They do well because they come in with a good attitude (态度) and wish to adapt well,” Garcia said.
5.What did Palacios think of the freshman challenges?
    A.They happened as expected.
B.They were hard to fight off.
    C.They would disappear soon.
    D.They mostly focused on grades.
6.Why did Palacios' school require the 9th graders to enter the school on August 8?
A.To show them around the campus.
B.To help them deal with their nervousness.
C.To let them experience high school life in advance.
D.To avoid them hearing bad stories about high school.
7.What kind of feeling did Garcia express in her words?
    A.Shock. B.Worry. C.Annoy. D.Satisfaction.
8.Where is this text most likely from?
A.A personal diary. B.A travel guide.
    C.A news report. D.A letter.

    The Kite Runner
    By Khaled Hosseini
As a Middle Eastern and North African Studies student, I have a great interest in books about what takes place in this area. I first read this book in high school and really enjoyed it because of its accurate language. If any of you is interested in reading this book and hasn’t yet, I highly recommend it.
    Firefly Lane
    By Kristin Hannah
This is my favorite book. It is a story about friendship, love and life lessons. The story covers the lives of two best friends, Tully and Kate, from childhood to adulthood. I learned so much about friendship and life. So, read Firefly Lane! You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and then you’ll share this book to your best friend.
    Half the Sky
    By Nicholas D.Kristof

    The Little Prince
    By Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
This children’s book is simple. It might seem like a wrong book to recommend to someone in their twenties but perhaps that’s what makes it a good choice. It sings praises to exploration and shows the importance of making friends.

(2022·新疆·乌鲁木齐市第135中学高一期中)Educators today are more and more often heard to say that computer literacy is absolutely necessary for college students. Many even argue that each incoming freshman should have his or her own microcomputer. What advantages do computers offer the college students?
Any student who has used a word processor will know one compelling reason to use a computer: to write papers. Although not all students feel comfortable posing on a word processor, most find revising and editing much easier on it. One can alter, insert, or delete just by pressing a few keys, thus ridding students of the need to rewrite or retype. Furthermore, since the revision process is less difficult, students are more likely to revise as often as is necessary to end up with the best paper possible. For these reasons, many freshman English courses require the use of a word processor.
Computers are also useful in the context of language courses, where they are used to drill students in basic skills. Software programs strengthen ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction, as well as instruction in French, German, Spanish, and other languages. By using these programs on a regular basis, students can improve their skills in a language while proceeding at their own pace.
Similarly, business and accounting students find that computer spreadsheet (电子表格) programs are all but important to many aspects of their work, while students pursuing careers in graphic arts, marketing, and public relations find that knowledge of computer graphic (绘图) is important. Education majors learn to develop grading systems using computers, while social science students use computers for analyzing and graphically displacing their research results.
It is no wonder then, that educators support the purchase and use of microcomputers by students. A useful tool, the computer can help students learn. And that is, after all, the reason for going to college.

A.Educational experts have developed grading systems.

(2022·广东·深圳市宝安第一外国语学校高一期中)For Canaan Elementary’s second grade in Patchogue, N. Y., today is speech day, and right now it’s Chris Palaez’s turn. The 8-year-old is the joker of the class. With shining dark eyes, he seems like the kind of kid who would enjoy public speaking.
But he’s nervous. “I’m here to tell you today why you should ... should ...” Chris trips on the “-ld,” pronunciation difficulty for many non-native English speakers. His teacher, Thomas Whaley, is next to him, whispering support. “... Vote for ... me ...” Except for some stumbles, Chris is doing amazingly well. When he brings his speech to a nice conclusion, Whaley invites the rest of the class to praise him.
A son of immigrants, Chris started learning English a little over three years ago. Whaley recalls how at the beginning of the year, when called upon to read, Chris would excuse himself to go to the bathroom.
Learning English as a second language can be a painful experience. What you need is a great teacher who lets you make mistakes. “It takes a lot for any student,” Whaley explains, “especially for a student who is learning English as their new language, to feel confident enough to say, ‘I don’t know, but I want to know.’ ”
Whaley got the idea of this second-grade presidential campaign project when he asked the children one day to raise their hands if they thought they could never be a president. The answer broke his heart. Whaley says the project is about more than just learning to read and speak in public. He wants these kids to learn to boast (夸耀)about themselves.
“Boasting about yourself, and your best qualities,” Whaley says, “is very difficult for a child who came into the classroom not feeling confident.”

(2022·辽宁·沈阳市第一二〇中学高一期中)I was born in a poor community on the north side of Boston, US, raised by a single mother who didn’t finish 3rd grade, lived each day on food stamps and attended what the media called “the most dysfunctional public school district”. Not many people expected much of me, so I had to expect something of myself.
On my 13th birthday, I bought a poster of Harvard to hang in my room. Being at Harvard became what I dreamt about. Even when my electricity was cut off and I woke up at 5:30 am to pitch blackness, I knew that my poster of Harvard was still hanging only two feet away from me.
Reminding myself of my goal each day made it easy to say no to the same choices I saw my peers making, because those paths wouldn’t have had me closer to my goal. Even poverty could not take away my power to decide what I choose to do with my day. The poster gave me the courage to cold email about 50 Harvard students so I could ask for feedback on my application essays; it gave me the energy to study just one more hour on my SATs when my friends were asleep; and it gave me the determination to submit just one more scholarship application when 180 others had already turned me down.
Every day I could feel myself getting closer and closer to my goal as my writing got better, my SAT score increased, and my scholarship checks started coming in. Finally, an email arrived from Harvard. The first word was “Congratulations!” A month later, Harvard flew me up to visit the campus where for the first time I stepped onto my dreaming land.
Who you are today is the result of the decisions you made yesterday, and who you will be tomorrow will be the result of the choices you make today. Who do you want to be tomorrow?

(2022·四川·自贡市田家炳中学高一期中)I was born in Venice, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, and studied designing at university here. Though I have also spent time away, I have always come back because it’s my home.
In Venice, there are no roads, only canals, so you have to get around on foot or by boat. I live on a canal in the Rialto area in a house that was built in 1588 for the Muti family, who were businessmen in the silk trade. In the mid-eighteenth century, it was home to the Vezzi family, who made things like plates and bowls in fine china and became rich by sending these around the world. These businessmen’s houses in Venice are like palaces. Their owners had to have space to show off their goods, but the building also had to be an office, a factory, a store and a home. My house came into our family in 1919, when it was bought by my grandfather. He died before I was born but he was the director of a museum where I often do research on old documents. On some of these, I’ve seen notes in his handwriting, so, in a way, I met him through these documents.
Sadly, the population of Venice has dropped from 120,000 in the 1950s to about 60,000 now. This doesn’t include the thousands of tourists who come to visit. I welcome the tourists but unless something is done to stop everyday shops like bakeries from disappearing, the city will die. I want people who love the city to come here to live and work and give Venice back a life that is not just about tourism.
39.What can we learn about the family who first owned the author’s home?
A.They were china dealers. B.They made plates and bowls.
C.They used to buy and sell silk. D.They helped to build the canals.
40.What does the author say about his grandfather?
A.He met his grandfather in an unusual way.
B.His grandfather taught him how to write.
C.His grandfather turned his home into a museum.
D.He found his grandfather’s handwriting hard to read.
41.What can we infer from the last paragraph about Venice?
A.It faces a difficult situation. B.It can’t feed its population.
C.It needs more modern shops. D.It has fewer tourists than before.

(2022·广西·桂林市临桂区五通中学高一期中)Have you been dreaming of taking a vacation, but wonder whether it’s better to take a solo journey, or have an adventure with friends? In my opinion, there are advantages in both travelling alone and in a group.
Group travel is generally much cheaper. You can get group rates on accommodations, certain modes of transportation, or tickets to tourist attractions. If you’re able to reduce costs, you’ll have extra money to see and do more things.
It is also safer to travel in a group. Do you remember when you were little your parents or teachers used the “buddy system”? It doesn’t only apply to children. It’s especially true when travelling, particularly in unknown places. Nobody can forecast problems or dangers on the way, such as traffic accidents and conflicts with strangers. When you travel with a friend or within a group, you have someone to watch your back.
Travelling with other people can also create shared experiences. For many people this is the best part of travelling — there’s always someone to do things with, laugh with, share stories with, and make memories with. These are just some of the reasons why travelling with friends can be more fun.
However, if you travel alone, you are the boss. There’s no one to tell you where to go or what to do, and you don’t have to make compromises. You can do things at your own pace, on your own timetable. For some people, meeting other travellers is part of the fun of travelling alone. A lot of solo travellers seem to end up in the same spots, so you have a chance to meet other people with the same interests. You can join them and spend some time together, then go your separate ways. Some people take trips alone because they want time to reflect. If you simply enjoy being on your own, or want to be with your own thoughts, without anyone else bothering you, then solo travel might be the way to go.
In general, whether you choose to travel solo or in a group mainly depends on your personality. Think of how you are in your everyday life — do you value your time alone, or do you prefer to be in the company of others? It might not seem like a big deal, but if you’re travelling for any length of time, it could mean the difference between an enjoyable, memorable vacation, and an unhappy trip.
42.What is the advantage of group travel, according to Paragraph 2?
A.You can save money by sharing a hotel room with friends.
B.You can choose what kind of transportation you want to take.
C.You can do many fun activities and laugh happily with friends.
D.You can visit a lot more places with friends for less money.
43.What does “buddy system” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.A rule you should follow at school. B.Your parents’ suggestion for making friends.
C.A way to ensure your safety when going out. D.A rule of not travelling to unknown places.
44.What advantage of solo travel is not mentioned?
A.You can decide where to go, when to go, and what to eat.
B.You can join other travellers based on your interests.
C.You can have time to reflect and think alone.
D.You can share memories with your friends after the journey.
    45.What is the author’s attitude?
A.Group travel is better than solo travel.
B.Travelling alone has more positive factors.
C.The way you like to travel depends on your personality.
D.It is not a big deal to choose to travel alone or in group.

(2022·辽宁朝阳·高一期中)All parents know exercise is important for children: It can lower heart risks, control weight and help kids do better in school. Experts have also proved that outdoor activities at an early age can help children form healthy habits for life. But don’t expect kids to understand about those things. Some kids just aren’t into exercise, but that shouldn’t mean they have to be addicted to the TV. So parents could do something to help inactive kids fall in love with physical activity.
If parents sit in front of the TV every night, kids aren’t likely to respect restrictions(限制) you set on their screen time either. So check your own behavior and serve as a role model by putting physical activity into your everyday life. Walk instead of driving if possible. Regularly join in activities that you enjoy and let your kids see how much you enjoy them. In this way, they may “do as the Romans do”. Make sure that children’s fitness is included in the family schedule as well as school, work and shopping. Then you and your children are more likely to stick to an exercise plan. And your children will begin to expect that Sunday morning usually means a hike ride, and on a couple of nights after dinner the family takes a light walk through the neighborhood.
Children who aren’t naturally good at physical activity may be worried about their lack of physical skills and even fear public failure. They need all the support and encouragement from parents. Negative comments don’t work and will only make them feel bad. Remember, focus on the effort—choosing to be active or trying to improve a skill—rather than the result.
46.What’s the second paragraph mainly about?
A.When parents can watch TV. B.What activity parents can join in.
C.Why children should enjoy exercise. D.How parents can lead children to exercise.
47.What does the text tell us?
A.It is the result that always comes first.
B.Kids can choose either exercise or the TV.
C.Exercise is necessary for healthy development.
D.Children having few physical skills should be punished.
48.For whom is the text written?
    A.Parents. B.Children. C.PE teachers. D.Experts.
49.How can we describe the author’s attitude to children’s enjoying exercise?
    A.Doubtful. B.Opposed. C.Supportive. D.Unconcerned.

根据Jiuzhaigou to Huanglong部分中“Visitors can hire a private car and the hire is around 400 yuan for a round trip.(游客可以租一辆私家车,来回费用约为400元。)”
    39.C    40.A    41.A

根据第二段中“I live on a canal in the Rialto area in a house that was built in 1588 for the Muti family, who were businessmen in the silk trade. (我住在里阿尔托地区的一条运河边,房子是1588年为穆蒂家族建造的,他们是丝绸贸易的商人)”可知,最先拥有作者房子的那个家庭过去经常买卖丝绸。故选C。
40.细节理解题。根据第二段中“On some of these, I’ve seen notes in his handwriting, so, in a way, I met him through these documents.(在其中一些文件上,我看到了他的笔迹,所以,某种程度上,我是通过这些文件认识他的)”可知,关于祖父,作者说他以一种不同寻常的方式见到了他的祖父。故选A。
根据最后一段“Sadly, the population of Venice has dropped from 120,000 in the 1950s to about 60,000 now. This doesn’t include the thousands of tourists who come to visit. I welcome the tourists but unless something is done to stop everyday shops like bakeries from disappearing, the city will die. I want people who love the city to come here to live and work and give Venice back a life that is not just about tourism.(遗憾的是,威尼斯的人口已经从20世纪50年代的12万下降到现在的6万左右。这还不包括成千上万前来参观的游客。我欢迎游客,但除非采取措施阻止面包店等日常商店消失,否则这座城市将会消亡。我希望热爱这座城市的人们来这里生活和工作,让威尼斯重新拥有一种不只是旅游的生活)”可推知,威尼斯正面临着一个困难的局面。故选A。
    42.D    43.C    44.D    45.C

根据第二段“Group travel is generally much cheaper. You can get group rates on accommodations, certain modes of transportation, or tickets to tourist attractions. If you’re able to reduce costs, you’ll have extra money to see and do more things.(跟团旅行通常要便宜得多。你可以获得住宿、某些交通方式或旅游景点门票的团体价格。如果你能降低成本,你就会有额外的钱去看和做更多的事情)”可知,跟团旅游的好处是你可以花更少的钱和朋友去更多的地方。故选D。
43.词句猜测题。根据第三段“Do you remember when you were little your parents or teachers used the “buddy system”? It doesn’t only apply to children. It’s especially true when travelling, particularly in unknown places. Nobody can forecast problems or dangers on the way, such as traffic accidents and conflicts with strangers. When you travel with a friend or within a group, you have someone to watch your back.(你还记得你小的时候,你的父母或老师使用的“伙伴制度”吗?这不仅适用于儿童。旅行时尤其如此,尤其是在未知的地方。没有人能够预测路上的问题或危险,例如交通事故和与陌生人的冲突。当你和朋友或团队一起旅行时,你会有人在背后保护你)”可知,“伙伴制度”意思是“一种外出时确保安全的方法”。故选C。
44.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“However, if you travel alone, you are the boss. If you simply enjoy being on your own, or want to be with your own thoughts, without anyone else bothering you, then solo travel might be the way to go.(然而,如果你独自旅行,你就是老板。
根据最后一段中“In general, whether you choose to travel solo or in a group mainly depends on your personality.(一般来说,你选择独自旅行还是结伴旅行主要取决于你的个性)”可知,作者的态度是你喜欢的旅行方式取决于你的个性。故选C。
    46.D    47.C    48.A    49.C

根据第二段“If parents sit in front of the TV every night, kids aren’t likely to respect restrictions(限制) you set on their screen time either. So check your own behavior and serve as a role model by putting physical activity into your everyday life.”(如果父母每晚都坐在电视机前,孩子们也不太可能遵守你在他们的屏幕时间上设置的限制。
根据第一段“All parents know exercise is important for children: It can lower heart risks, control weight and help kids do better in school. Experts have also proved that outdoor activities at an early age can help children form healthy habits for life.”(所有父母都知道锻炼对孩子很重要:它可以降低心脏病风险、控制体重并帮助孩子在学校做得更好。
根据第二段“If parents sit in front of the TV every night, kids aren’t likely to respect restrictions(限制) you set on their screen time either. So check your own behavior and serve as a role model by putting physical activity into your everyday life.”(如果父母每晚都坐在电视机前,孩子们也不太可能遵守你在他们的屏幕时间上设置的限制。 以及下文中“Then you and your children are more likely to stick to an exercise plan.”(然后你和你的孩子更有可能坚持锻炼计划。) 故选A项。
根据第一段“So parents could do something to help inactive kids fall in love with physical activity.”(所以父母可以做一些事情来帮助不活跃的孩子爱上体育活动。)
    50.B    51.A    52.C    53.D

根据第二段“She grew up and still lives in the United States, but in June 2019 she made the “quite difficult” decision to compete for China.(她在美国长大,现在仍然生活在美国,但在2019年6月,她做出了一个“相当艰难”的决定,为中国比赛。)”
根据第四段“It is reported that She scored 1, 580 points out of a maximum 1,600 in the SAT (美国大学人学考试), and has been offered a place at Stanford.(据报道,她在SAT考试中获得了1580分(满分1600分),并被斯坦福大学录取。)”可知,谷爱凌成绩优异,是一个很聪明的学生;根据最后一段““My goal is to win Olympic gold.” she told the official Olympic website. “It’s the top achievement. And that would be rewarding for all the work that I’ve done to achieve greatness in the sport.”(“我的目标是赢得奥运金牌,”她告诉奥运会官方网站。“这是最高的成就。这将是对我在这项运动中取得伟大成就所做的所有工作的回报。”)”可知,谷爱凌以奥运金牌作为自己的目标,可推断她是一个有雄心有抱负的人,因此可用clever和 ambitious来描述谷爱凌。故选A。
根据第五段“Gu started on the snow at the age of 3, was competing in national competitions at 9 and won her first World Cup event at 15. She won two gold medals and a silver for China at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, Switzerland. On Jan. 30th, 2021. Gu made her debut (首次亮相) at the X Games in Aspen, Colorado and won two golds and a bronze.(谷爱凌3岁就开始在雪地上比赛,9岁就开始参加全国比赛,15岁时首次赢得世界杯冠军。在瑞士洛桑举行的2020年青年奥运会上,她为中国赢得了两枚金牌和一枚银牌。2021年1月30日。在科罗拉多州阿斯彭举行的极限运动会上,谷首次亮相,并赢得了两枚金牌和一枚铜牌。)”可知本段主要介绍了谷爱凌作为自由式滑雪运动员所取得的成就,故选C。
53.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段的“Born in California and representing the United States before switching to China, teenager Gu Ailing will be most likely to be one of the faces of the 2022Beijing Winter Olympics.(谷爱凌出生在加州,在转投中国之前代表美国参赛,她最有可能成为2022年北京冬奥会的面孔之一。)”
