Prtugal’s white strks (鹳) were nce a migratry bird (候鸟), knwn t leave the area each winter t travel t Africa’s warmer climate, but recently they have been staying put.
Surprisingly, thugh, the strks’ number has actually been n the rise. There are nw thught t be mre than 14,000 birds in Prtugal in winter — a ten-time increase ver the last 20 years. Any unusual change f an animal’s natural behavir ften has negative influences.
It has been thught that their increase has a clse relatinship with a grwing number f landfill sites (垃圾填埋场) in the area, prviding the birds with a supply f fatty and dirty rubbish t eat, including junk fd. Was it the junk fd that stpped them migrating, r is Eurpe’s warming climate t criticize? Researchers sught t figure ut exactly why their natural behavir had changed in this way. T understand, a team kept an eye n 48 white strks by equipping them with small GPS cmputers, which recrded their mvements five times a day, checking hw ften they traveled t landfill sites as well as hw fast they flew.
The cnclusins were shcking. The birds als established mre hmes next t landfill sites — the team said that 80% f white strks were spending mst f their time by the rubbish all year rund, accrding t the results. The strks eat almst anything. “Every time after a truck with rubbish came, they cllected what they culd,” says Aldina Franc f the University f East Anglia in the UK. The strks have even been knwn t eat plastic, including ld cmputer parts. “Really what they are trying t get at is rubbish that we thrw away... like hamburgers, burnt meat and fish,” said Franc.
This rich and clrful supply f fd will sn becme hard t find, thugh, as new laws frm Eurpean Unin (EU) rder that waste fd be recycled. Open-air landfills will als be replaced by cvered equipment, which birds will nt be able t eat.
The white strks therefre face an uncertain future. Will they migrate t Africa as they had dne fr hundreds f years befre, r will they stay put? N ne knws. “I wnder what the Prtuguese strks will d nce the landfill sites are all clsed, and we are ging t cntinue t watch these strks and see hw they will respnd t the changes,” said Aldina Franc.
    8. What d yu knw abut the team’s research?
    A. Researchers equipped 48 small cmputers n white strks.
    B. The GPS cmputers were used t recrd white strks’ mvements.
    C. The cnclusins the team gt were the same as they predicted.
    D. Researchers fund Eurpe’s warming climate accunted fr strks’ staying put.
    9. What can be inferred frm paragraph 4?
    A. The landfill made the strks lse their hmes.
    B. The landfill helped increase the number f strks.
    C. Open-air landfills will be replaced and strks will die ut.
    D. The landfill gave the strks fd and in turn, influenced where they lived.
    10. What can we learn frm what Aldina Franc said?
    A. He will cntinue t d research n white strks.
    B. The Prtuguese strks can eat whatever we thrw away.
    C. Peple shuld prepare mre healthy fd fr white strks.

    Fact r Fictin?
Nn-fictin can be brken dwn int many categries. One categry is literary nn-fictin, which is still based in fact but emplys sme f the strytelling elements that fictin uses. Literary nn-fictin includes a type f autbigraphy(自传) called memir. Memir mst ften fcuses n a certain perid f the authr’s life. It is, by definitin, rted in truth. Still, peple smetimes questin whether memir shuld be categrized as nn-fictin at all.
As nn-fictin, memir is intended t be factual. Is this really the case, thugh, cnsidering memir relies n human memry? One classic study, led by psychlgist Elizabeth Lftus, shwed hw easily an interviewer’s chice f wrding can influence an eyewitness’s accunt f a traffic accident. It is therefre reasnable t wnder whether memir shuld cntinue t be branded as nn-fictin.
Certainly, human memry can be unreliable. Hwever, a memir authr is undubtedly writing abut significant and impactful life events. Memries f such events are actually mre reliable than thers. Studies shw that the mre influential an event is, the mre accurately peple recall the details. As an emtinally charged event unflds, the brain activity changes in a way that amplifies small details. This activity helps build a mre precise and accurate memry.
Of curse the brain is nt a camera that can “save” any memry with perfect accuracy. But if memir is questinable due t the imperfectins f the human mind, then critics will have t tackle nn-fictin mre bradly. All writers are using their memries when they create, and mrever, they are relying n the memries f thers. Jurnalists cnduct interviews t tell a news stry and histry writers depend n the accuracy f accunts frm lng ag. Yet they all rightfully fall under the umbrella f nn-fictin.
Sme peple may dubt memir nt because they mistrust human memry, but because they mistrust the authr’s mrality. Critics may suspect an authr f making up events. Hwever, there is n reasn t be suspicius f memir authr’s intentins. Writing a factual memir that appeals t readers has the ptential t be prfitable fr the authr, and there is n mtivatin fr a memir writer t knwingly change r beautify the truth.
Lking beynd the authr’s wn life events, memir can infrm readers abut the wrld in the same way that ther nn-fictin can. Memir has a way f relaying facts abut anything frm an ccupatin t brief fashin trends, all f it meaningful t the authr.
    12. The authr intrduces the tpic in Paragraph 1 by _____ .
    A. illustrating why it is imprtant t talk abut memir
    B. listing sme interesting facts and features f memir
    C. defining key terms that are discussed later in the passage
    D. making a cmparisn between autbigraphy and memir
    13. What des the underlined wrd “amplifies” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
    A. Cllects.B. Ignres.
    C. Enlarges.D. Absrbs.
    14. We can learn frm the passage that _____.
    A. critics argue that a news stry by a jurnalist is fictin
    B. a memir authr’s memry can be influenced by the interviewees
    C. memir can’t shw readers facts abut what an authr experienced
    D. emtinal mments can cause the creatin f mre detailed memries
    15. Accrding t the passage, the authr believes _____.
    A. the mst prfitable memirs are thse shwn t be the mst factual
    B. many authrs are untrustwrthy, althugh many memirs are fact-based
    C. memir is rightfully categrized under the umbrella f literary nn-fictin
    D. memry is t unreliable fr memir t be cnsidered a type f nn-fictin
