At the age of 13, Alena Wicker was accepted by the University of Alabama’s Heersink School of Medicine, becoming the youngest black student to study there. As a former NASA intern, she is well on her way to achieving her dreams.
Alena’s mother is not surprised, claiming that her daughter has always been exceptional. “From childhood, Alena was gifted,” Daphne McQuarter, Alena’s mother, says. “It was just how she did things and how advanced she was. She was reading chapter books.”
McQuarter pulled her daughter from school, and homeschooled her during elementary school. Even after Alena returned to school in fifth grade, she continued studying high school subjects on the basis of a curriculum (课程) crafted by her mother.
“I was bored,” Alena explains. “The high school work was so easy for me that I ended up graduating from high school when I was 12. I love school, I love learning, and I love reading. I have a hunger and desire to learn, and that’s just always been me.”
After graduating from high school at age 12,Alena enrolled (登记) in two separate universities, earning degrees in biological sciences from both Arizona State University and Oakwood University.
And, while studying for the accelerated degrees, Alena took the time to inspire others to follow in her footsteps.
Alena started The Brown STEM Girl Foundation, in memory of Katherine Johnson, who had been a pioneering African-American mathematician at NASA. The Foundation’s goal is “to engage, empower, and educate girls of color in STEM-Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics”.
Alena promotes her Foundation on Facebook. “It feels amazing to be able to create a path for girls that look like me,” Alena shared. “It doesn’t matter how old you are. You can do it. Don’t let anybody tell you no. I would say to any little girl out there this: Never give up on yourself, and never let someone tell you that you can’t do something.”
    4. What do we know about Alena when she was in elementary school?
    A. She disliked her school schedules.
    B. She earned high scores in all courses.

Children under five must spend less time sitting watching screens or staying in prams, get better quality sleep and have more time for active play if they are to grow up healthy, according to new guidelines issued by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The new guidelines on physical activity, sedentary (久坐的) behaviour and sleep for children under 5 years of age were developed by a WHO panel of experts. They assessed the effects of inadequate (不足的) sleep on young children, and time spent sitting watching screens or restrained (被限制) in chairs and prams. They also reviewed evidence around the benefits of increased activity levels.
Failure to meet current physical activity recommendations is responsible for more than 5 million deaths globally each year across all age groups. Currently, over 23% of adults and 80% of adolescents are not sufficiently physically active. If healthy physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep habits are established early in life, this helps shape habits through childhood, adolescence and into adulthood.
“What we really need to do is bring back play for children,” says Dr Juana Willumsen, who focuses on childhood obesity and physical activity. “This is about making the shift from sedentary time to playtime, while protecting sleep.”
The pattern of overall 24-hour activity is key: replacing sedentary screen time with more active play, while making sure young children get enough good-quality sleep. Quality time spent in interactive non-screen-based activities with a caregiver, such as reading, storytelling, singing and puzzles, is very important for child development.
The important interactions between physical activity, sedentary hehaviour and adequate sleep time, and their impact on physical and mental health and well-being, were fully recognized, which called for clear guidance on physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep in young children.
Applying the recommendations in these guidelines during the first five years of life will contribute to children’s motor and cognitive development and lifelong health.
    8. What’s the purpose of the WHO issuing new guidelines?
    A. To help parents take better care of children.
    B. To make sure children grow up healthy.
    C. To reduce children’s time spent on TV.
    D. To keep children physically active.
    9. What does Dr Juana Willumsen intend to tell us?
    A. Children need more time to play and sleep.
    B. Sitting too much leads to children’s poor health.
    C. It is important for children to have healthy food.
    D. Parents should play with their children more often.
    10. Which activity may be beneficial to children’s development according to the text?
    A. Reading on their own.
    B. Watching educational TV programs.
    C. Searching for puzzles online.
    D. Joining the singing club.
    11. Which can be the best title for the text?
    A. The World Health Organization has issued new guidelines
    B. To grow up healthy children need to sit less and play more
    C. Some good habits that will lead to children’s lifelong health
    D. 5 million die globally each year because of unhealthy lifestyle

Over the past decade or so, camera technology has become more and more integrated into our everyday lives. We use our phone camera to store memories and important information, and cameras help keep people safe while driving. Parallel parking is so much easier now that cars come with rearview cameras.
However, up until now, cameras have also been limited. Wide field of vision cameras have been around since 2013, but these cameras only have a 180 degree field of vision, and can be clumsy (笨拙的). They work by essentially merging images coming from two or more cameras. This can lead to distortions (失真). In addition, using the cameras underwater also leads to distortion as light refracts differently underwater.
According to Fast Company, the researchers turned to nature for inspiration. They began by studying the fiddler crab and its compound eye. Unlike humans, fiddler crabs can look in many directions at the same time, giving them a full 360 degree field of vision. In addition, fiddler crabs need to be able to see well both on land and in water.
Dr Fredo Durand, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, told Laser Focus World: “Amphibian creatures are particularly exciting because they need to operate in two environments with vastly different optical characteristics. It’s humbling to learn from nature how to address these challenges.”
The result is a little black round ball of a camera that interprets and understands light in various ways. The scientists tested the camera’s capabilities by projecting a group of images onto the camera at different angles. They also immersed the camera halfway in a tub to test its underwater capabilities. It passed with flying colors.
Though the camera is still in the early stages of its development and is not ready for commercial use, the hope is that it will eventually be used to help make cars safer by improving camera quality in general and improving camera capabilities in the rain.
    12. Which is a limitation of the wide field of vision cameras?
    A. They can only be used underwater.
    B. They occupy too much space.
    C. They consist of only two cameras.
    D. They cover a limited field of vision.
    13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A The surprising adaptability of the fiddler crab.
    B. The advantages of the fiddler crab’s compound eye.
    C. The way of carrying out research into creatures.
    D. The possibility of having a 360 degree field of vision.
    14. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “immersed” in paragraph 5?
    A. Designed. B. Repaired. C. Drowned. D. Abandoned.
    15. What is the author’s attitude towards the camera?
    A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Carefree.
    【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A
    【解析】

    【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“According to Fast Company, the researchers turned to nature for inspiration. They began by studying the fiddler crab and its compound eye. Unlike humans, fiddler crabs can look in many directions at the same time, giving them a full 360 degree field of vision. In addition, fiddler crabs need to be able to see well both on land and in water.(据Fast Company说,研究人员从大自然中寻找灵感。他们开始研究招潮蟹和它的复眼。与人类不同的是,招潮蟹可以同时看向多个方向,这让它们拥有360度的视野。此外,招潮蟹需要在陆地和水中都有很好的视力)”可知,本段主要描述了招潮蟹复眼的优点。故选B项。
    【14题详解】
词义猜测题。根据文章倒数第二段划线句“They also immersed the camera halfway in a tub to test its underwater capabilities.(他们还将相机immersed在浴缸中,以测试其水下能力)”可知,为了测试相机水下能力,要将相机浸泡在水中,immerse与drown意思相符。故选C项。
    【15题详解】

Then, what shall we do to cultivate the quality? We should first set an achievable goal and work hard towards it. During the process, we should never give up when faced with challenges. Besides, it is a good idea to use our heroes to inspire us when we suffer failure.
As the saying goes, “Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” If we always keep on trying, we will surely succeed in the end.

    47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I would like to tell you a story about myself. It was a cold January night when I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theater. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. Tired, I almost had no time to relax. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. I said to myself, “It is time to say goodbye.” City life had become too much for me. I had expected to realize my dreams in such a big city but it seemed that I was abandoned. No one noticed me and no one cared for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small. It was freezing cold with wind blowing wildly. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from some possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. In spite of this, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk. Inside the wallet was the money that I depended on to pay for the rent this month. Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. What I desperately wanted was my missing wallet, my precious wallet, without which I couldn’t cover my expenses.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

A voice from the inside of the garbage (垃圾) truck caught my attention.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】参考范文:
So I took action immediately. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. I bent down, searching the street carefully by the light of shining streetlight. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously, my wallet was nowhere to be found. “The homeless people must have picked it up,” my heart sank at the thought of it. I was stuck in a lot of depression. I was thinking of giving up the search when I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to me.
A voice from the inside of the garbage (垃圾) truck caught my attention. Then a man with an amused look in his eye came out from the truck. “Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked. It was the very wallet that I was searching for. Tears of appreciation welled up in my eyes as I accepted the wallet. Not only did I get my wallet back, but I also got back some enjoyment of life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.
