    2023年高考真题

    Writing 1

2023年新高考全国Ⅰ&IIWhen I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.

So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.

I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.

What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.

When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

    Writing 1

    1.(2023·广东佛山·统考模拟预测)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Standing outside the cave entrance, Grandfather admired the green-carpeted hills, but Lin hated the cave. He had come here today only because of Grandfather.

Grandfather preferred to use guano, the waste matter of bats, to fertilize (施肥) his crops. But he was too weak to do the whole job. He could gather the guano and bring it out of the cave in the basket, but he needed Lin to carry it home in the wooden cart.

Grandfather took a shovel (铲子) and flashlight from the cart. “Change your mind and come inside with me?” he asked Lin. “It won’t happen again, Lin,” Grandfather promised. “Last time it was my mistake. We shouldn’t have waited until nearly dusk (黄昏) to go inside. I know that the bats fly out of the cave at dusk.” That was exactly what had happened on the Terrible Day of the Bats. As Lin had stood at the cave entrance, a crowd of black bats had erupted from it. Lin had been terrified.

“Bats hurt no one,” Grandfather had said. “Besides, you scared them as much as they did you.”

But nothing could make Lin forget the horror he had felt in that black cloud of bats. “I can’t go in there,” he told Grandfather now.

“OK,” Grandfather said. As he started into the cave, he called over his shoulder, “I’ll be out in no time.” Lin parked the cart and glanced at the shovel and flashlight inside it. His shovel and flashlight. He had used them before. Now they only reminded him of his fear.

Lin turned his back on the cart and walked down to the river. Grandfather would call when he was finished. Until then, Lin would put as much distance as possible between himself and the cave.

Lin watched two little birds splashing about at the edge of the river. He enjoyed the peaceful view over the vast river surface. Then Lin realized that Grandfather’s “no time” had turned into a long time.

Lin hurried up the hill toward the cave. The cart was still there. Grandfather was still inside. Something had gone wrong.

It was Christmas Eve morning, and I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Baby-Girl. As I got ready, I could hear icy rain pelting the windows. Baby-Girl was out there somewhere in the storm; I could just feel it. Sure, it had been a couple of weeks since she’d gone missing, but I still had faith. This was the season for miracles, after all.

About two weeks aga, my sweet kitty disappeared from my parents’ house in my hometown. Baby-Gil had been staying with them while I was between apartments. At the time, I lived and worked in another city. I was saying with fends until I rented my own house. Baby-Girl had gotten out of my parents’ house the day before I was set to drive back home to pick her up.

My dad and I had spent that entire visit searching for her. Dad was a “realist”, which meant he spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. “She’s either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found her,” he said. I rolled my eyes. He could do with a little more faith!

Besides, though I couldn’t explain it, I knew I’d see Baby-Girl again. She could survive all on her own. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Baby-Girl. Even after I returned to my house without her, deep down I had this undeniable feeling that we would be reunited one day.

Now, home again for the holidays, I was determined to pick up my search right where I’d left off. I grabbed Baby-Girl’s cat carrier and loaded it into the car, and then asked my dad to drive me to the shelter.

At the shelter, a staff member took us to see the cats. We walked through rows of cages. My eyes scanned cats of all colors and sizes. None of them was my Baby-Girl. Then I noticed a room farther back. I pushed ahead. “Sweetheart, that’s where they keep the cats that just came in,” Dad said. “Your cat wouldn’t be in there.”

    The chain of kindness

The rain was coming down so hard that each drop seemed to explode as it hit the roof of the car. Tom looked out into the coal-black night, struggling desperately to keep his car on the road. The rain beatdown continuously and the road was deserted except for Tom and his car.

Tom could see his wheelchair in the backseat from the rear-view mirror and quickly looked down at his thin, broken legs. He could feel a familiar wave of despair start to wash over him. Suddenly, a loud noise shook him out of his moment of hopelessness as the car began to bump down the road. “Great,” he thought, “a flat tyre.”

With a heavy sigh, Tom brought the car to as top, resting his head on the steering wheel, defeated! After a few seconds, he looked up and peered out of the window. In the distance, he could see a light twinkling in the blackness.

When Tom approached the house, a young girl around ten years old was standing in the doorway. He pulled up and rolled down the window. “Are your parents at home?” he shouted over the wind and rain. “I have a flat tyre and I need help.”

“Wait a minute,” the girl replied and went into the house. A few minutes later, she returned with an old man. The girl held his arm and smiled lovingly up at him.

Tom explained the problem to the old man and added, “I need help because my legs are paralyzed.” The words came out flat. But he did not know how else he could convey the fact that he needed help from this weak old man in the middle of the rainstorm. The old man simply nodded.

The old man and the little girl concentrated on their work and the rain was soaking them. Once again, Tom couldn’t help but feel he was useless. Soon the old man stepped to the window. “You’re all set,” he said. Tom handed some money to the old man, but he made no move to take it. Finally, the young girls aid, “Grandfather is blind.”

Our church congregation (集会) in Toronto has a way of assisting those who have financial difficulties without making the receiver feel shame or guilt. Money is dropped into an offering box with only the name of the receiver on the envelope. The envelopes are then distributed to those members without them knowing the name of the giver.

There came a time when my husband and I were among those in need. Both of us lost jobs at that time and there was little hope that we could be employed within a short time. Of course, out of self-esteem, we did hot talk about our financial difficulty with anyone else. The only reason our children knew was that we had to cut back on many things. Still, we hoped they were not aware of the extent of our need, nor of how much then father and I were suffering because of it. We did not want to burden them with a problem they could do nothing to solve.

With time going by, our situation wasn’t improving, and my husband and I knew that we would have to look for outside help. In that cold winter, just as we reached the point of despair, our church gave us a gift envelope that had been left in the offering box. You couldn’t imagine how overjoyed we were on receiving such a very substantial amount of money, which was enough to bring us through that desperate time. We couldn’t help but wonder who had given such a generous gift. We were extremely relieved and enormously grateful. In this way, we could survive daring this tough period with the money. Besides, we needn’t worry about our son’s university tuition, that is, he needn’t apply for any loan (贷款) because he had taken a part-time job and worked hard to earn some money since he was nine years old. He had been a paper carrier for The Toronto Star, a car washer, a dishwasher and so on. He had been careful for his small earnings so we had trusted him to leave all his wages with him instead of putting it into the bank towards his education.

A year later, our son was applying, for a student loan.

Ellie was only eight years old when a tsunami(海啸)hit her old neighborhood. She had been out of town on a school trip when disaster struck, but her parents, Jude and Rachel, were lost during the tragedy.

With her house left in complete ruin, all Ellie had left was the bag she had packed for her school trip. As the young girl had nowhere else to go, her grandmother Louisa welcomed Ellieinto her home. Louisa lived in a different state to Ellie’s hometown, which meant that Ellie needed to transfer to a new school. She felt alone and isolated, away from her old friends and in a new environment.

Ellie’s grandmother was already retired and barely had enough money to cover their needs. To make matters worse, Jude and Rachel’s belongings were destroyed in the tsunami. Louisa couldn’t afford to buy Ellie new clothes. Therefore, when Ellie’s clothes were visibly small as she grew taller, she felt very embarrassed. She didn’t want to attend class and would often hide in the bathrooms. After school, she would run home before her classmates could see her.

Ellie kept a notebook full of designs. Actually, Ellie’s mother was a seamstress (女裁缝)and taught Ellie how to sew when she was very young. Ellie often dreamed of how she would dress if she were rich.

Meanwhile, Ellie’s teacher, Mrs. Roberts, began to notice her abnormality from class. One day, she decided to get to the bottom of the situation and called Louisa. That’s when the older woman tearfully explained to Mrs. Roberts that Ellie had lost everything and felt self-conscious(难为情的). “I’ve found some of her drawings about the clothes design. I think she’s ashamed that I can’t afford to buy her new clothes for school,” Louisa explained. Mrs. Roberts had a lot of sympathy for the girl, who had already suffered due to the tsunami.

17-year-old Tammy lives on the Little Acres Farm with her family. In October, they create a successful hay maze (干草堆的迷宫) on the farm and people buy tickets to get in. However, people like to see pumpkins on Halloween, and the farm doesn’t have very good pumpkins.

One morning, Tammy’s father told her, “The Shelby Farm is planning a hay maze this year, which means they are going to compete with us.” “Oh no!” said Tammy, “they’ll take away our business!” “Well, we’ll just have to make ours bigger and better,” Dad suggested. “Tammy, you have good social skills. I need you to go over to the farm and see what they are up to,” Dad said. “Can I trust you to do a good job?” “Of course you can, Dad!” she said. “I’ll find out what’s going on and come back with a full report!”

Early the next morning, Tammy took her bicycle and went to find out information about the Shelby’s plan for the maze. When she got to the farm, Mr. Shelby was staring at piles of hay in front of the barn, looking confused. In his hand was a bright orange pumpkin.

“Hello, Mr. Shelby,” she smiled, “how lovely the pumpkin is!If only our farm had pumpkins like it.” “Thank you, Tammy. I’m glad you like it. Why not take it home as a gift for your family? We got a plentiful harvest of good pumpkins this year.” “Thanks, you are so kind and generous.” When Mr. Shelby handed the pumpkin to Tammy, he sighed, “How I wish my farm had a hay maze as beautiful as the pumpkin.” Looking at the pumpkin in hand and the piles of hay in front of the barn, Tammy had an idea in her mind.

When Tammy got home, she showed the pumpkin to Dad as well as her solution to the current situation.

Sara, my neighbor, and I were sitting in our yard, chatting, and frowning at the wooden house across the street.

Nobody in the neighborhood had met these two young men there yet. The two men had long hair and beards and dressed strangely. They kept to themselves. When they came outside, they never made eye contact with anyone. “They sure don’t fit into the neighborhood,” Sara said, the corners of her mouth turning down as she stared at that house.

Sara said, “What about our street parties? We’ve always included everyone. Should we invite them?” I sighed, “Try being nice, Sara.” Suddenly, Sara sat up straight and her eyes grew wide with curiosity when a government car pulled up before Mrs Swain’s house next door. We hurried over. Mrs Swain was recovering from cancer and lived alone. Sara and I tried to keep an eye on her.

The man from the car put a piece of paper on Mrs Swain’s door and hurriedly left. Mrs Swain looked old, thin, and very tired when she opened the door. We three looked at the paper. It read: “Someone complained your grass’ length is against city rules. Please cut it in five days, or you’ll be fined.”

It was a shame that nobody had cut her grass for her. However, Sara and I lived alone, and we were both pregnant. What was worse, we were on a tight budget, and the other families here were on vacation.

Sara and I comforted Mrs Swain, telling her we’d figure out a way. Mrs Swain blinked in confusion, “Who would complain? Everyone knows that my old lawn mower is broken. And I’ve been sick too.” “It may be those two guys across the street,” Sara whispered, angrily staring at that wooden house.

Just then, a voice that seemed too gentle to be coming from the strange young man behind me said, “What is going on? Is she alright?” He nodded toward Mrs Swain. Sara looked at him coldly and said, “Some guys reported her because her grass is too high.” Her eyes ran over him disapprovingly, but he didn’t seem to notice.

“BEES ARE DYING!” Doodlebug Pinkley cried, thrusting his latest copy of World of the Weird at his sister Dandelion. His favorite magazine had a lot of strange but important content. This month it was insects in danger. The number of certain bugs, including bees, was falling sharply all over the world.

“It’s terrible!” Dandelion replied, after reading the article. They were sitting on the outdoor patio (露台) of Cool Yule’s Ice Cream Shop.

“Maybe we could make a bee roof garden, too — like in this article,” Doodlebug suggested. Yule recommended making it on the patio, adding a pollinator (传粉昆虫) garden up there would attract bees — and more customers. “Brilliant!” Everyone else responded in a chorus.

Now the problem was how to get the funds. Dandelion proposed raising money by setting up a booth near the shop’s entrance to alert people and ask them to donate. The plan was a go!

The next day their friends Bog, Tomiko and Izzy met Doodlebug and Dandelion inside Yule’s. Everyone was excited. They made handouts explaining how the garden would attract pollinators, do something to help prevent flooding, and improve the air.

“We should have a bee mascot (吉祥物),” Izzy suggested. Doodlebug recalled the old bee costume that his Mom wore for Halloween once. Over the enthusiastic uproar, Dandelion shouted, “And you’ll be the bee, Doodlebug!” “WILL NOT!” Doodlebug shot back. “Too big. We need to stuff some grownup into that costume.” But who, then? For ten mad minutes the kids debated loudly.

“Silence, you little noisy kids!” someone suddenly roared. “I’m trying to read about bees in danger!” The whole crew turned in shock. There sat Doodlebug’s horrible teacher, Mrs. Noodleknocker. Doodlebug had discovered long ago that she was a World of the Weird fan, but that didn’t make her any nicer. “Bees and butterflies need help!” Mrs. Noodleknocker cried. “But a person can’t even worry about them peacefully!”

There was a time when my favorite thing to do in the entire world was to play in the woods near our house. A river ran through them, so not only could I climb branches, but I could turn over rocks on the riverbank and find baby eels (鳗鱼).

My favorite book was called Guide to Reptiles (爬行动物). My father had given it to me for my birthday, and I read every page over and over, looking at the pictures of colorful animals. Some of the snakes were the most beautiful creatures I had ever seen, and some were described as poisonous, but still an important part of the ecosystem.

Little did I know that my book would end up saving a life.

My family moved to Virginia, into a new house. The houses were so new that no one had lived in them before. In fact, woods had been there first, and almost all the trees had been cut down to make room for houses and driveways. Inside our new house, everything smelled like fresh paint. Outside, no lawns had been planted, but my father tossed out grass seed and baby seedlings grew. My brother Patrick and I could not walk on them. We had to play in the driveway.

All the same, I liked our new house. One of the best things about living near the woods were the animals that would come into our yard. Rabbits and turtles came over every night. It seemed as if they were only trying to go home, and instead, what they had found was a big new land where their old homes used to be.

Besides playing in the driveway, we spent time in a sandbox, which my father built right next to the driveway. One day before dinner, I ran to the sandbox to build a castle but found there in the sandbox was a snake.

It was lying very still, and it was beautiful. The snake had rings of color around it-red, then white, then yellow, then black. I had seen a picture just like it in my reptile book, and I remembered that it was one of the prettiest snakes in it. It said in the book that the poisonous snake looked very much like it. I was scared and ran inside.

Para 1: “Dad! Dad! There’s a snake in the sandbox!” I yelled.

From the moment my husband brought home a box of six chicks from Tractor Supply Company, our nine-year-old, Sophie, didn’t let them out of her sight. She named them Trixie, Beauty, Sweet Pea, Speedie, Captain Flint, and Adrian (we were reading Treasure Island and watching Rocky at the time).

Sophie made a promise that she would take good care of them and took at least one chicken everywhere we let her. We were content with this; after all, it was a good way to make her dutiful and responsible. So when we wouldn’t let them sleep in her bed, she was very upset. She, actually, argued about this issue again and again, claiming that it is Duty NO.1 to company her baby chickens to sleep. Later, we made a compromise that we’ve allowed one inside at a time if Sophie immediately cleans up after the visit.

On a special festival, she dressed as a chicken and convinced us it was the turn of Trixie and Sweet to come with her to get candies from the neighbors — that’s Duty NO.2 to company her baby to have fun. The reactions from neighbors were quite amusing. “Wait, are these real chickens you’re holding?” “Of course! They’re my babies, and I am the mother.” Sophie answered excitedly. Trixie and Sweet cooed (咕咕叫) the whole time, seeming to make response.

One hot day, I buried myself in piles of work when Sophie rushed into the room, asking “Mommy, can I take Captain Flint to the pond?” To be frank, I didn’t quite catch what she said but still nodded, even without taking my eyes off the screen. She jumped to cheer. “Captain Flint, let’s head for the pond now!” “Coo, coo.” Then they rushed out of the room.

Several minutes later, I suddenly realized that Sophie just went to the pond with a chicken! Could Sophie swim? No!!! Could chickens swim? No!!! Could anything unexpected happen?
