“Are you listening, Simon?” Simon’s teacher asked. It was a pretty usual question.
Simon shook his head, smiling. He hardly listened or tried hard in class. Talking was so much fun. He wanted to be heard rather than listen.
“Listen, and you will learn something.” Mrs Jacobs tried every day but Simon never paid attention. That evening, his throat really hurt. The next morning, when he opened his mouth to say “Good morning”, nothing came out, but a croak (低哑声).
Simon’s mother looked at him. “Honey, you’ve lost your voice.”
“Can I stay at home?” He tried to ask, but words didn’t come out. Instead his mother checked him for a fever and decided it was good for him to go to school, even if he couldn’t talk.
When he got to school, Mrs Jacobs said “Hello” to him, and he just nodded. When his friends asked him what TV shows he watched last night, he just shrugged (耸肩). By the time the bell rang for class, almost everyone was looking at him as if he’d grown a third eye.
Penny raised her hand, “Mrs Jacobs, why isn’t Simon talking?”
“He never stops talking,” Richard said worriedly.
Everyone started talking at once. They were excited, worried and surprised.
Simon sat in class, bored. He watched them talk to each other as if the teacher wasn’t there, but he couldn’t even do that. In math class he could hold up fingers if the answer was less than 10, but that wasn’t fun. He decided to try to pay attention.
He could do his homework that night. It gave him TV and game time with his work all done.
The next day, even though his voice was coming back, he stayed quiet again. The third day, he could talk fine, but he listened and raised his hand to speak.

At noon that day, I drove back to my house after the performance. Just as I entered the living room, I heard a gentle sound coming from the bedroom upstairs — it was the sound of my favorite violin.
    “Thief (小偷)!”
I rushed upstairs. Sure enough, as expected, a boy of about 12 years old was petting (抚摸) my violin. The boy had messy hair and a thin face, his big coat seemingly filled with something. At first glance (一瞥), I found a new pair of shoes missing. It seemed that he was surely a thief.
Then, I saw his eyes full of fear and despair (绝望). My anger was immediately replaced by a smile. I asked. “Are you Mr. Ram’s nephew (侄子), Michael? I’m his housekeeper (管家). Two days ago, I heard his nephew living in the countryside will come. It must be you. You’re really like him!”
Hearing my words, the boy was first surprised but then quickly said, “Has my uncle gone out? I think I’d better first go out for a walk and visit him again in a while.”
I asked the boy who was preparing to put down the violin, “Do you like to play the violin so much?”
“Yes, but I’m so poor that I can’t afford it,” the boy replied.
“Then I give this violin to you.” The boy looked at me in surprise, but he picked up the violin. Going out to the living room, he suddenly saw on the wall my huge color photo in which I performed in the Sydney Opera House. He was so afraid and trembled for a moment and ran out without looking back.
I was sure that the boy had understood I wasn’t the housekeeper at all because no one would decorate (装饰) the living room with the housekeeper’s photo.
A few years later, at a music competition of senior high school students in Melbourne, I was invited to judge (判决) the final. Finally, a violin player called Merritt won the first prize!
After the award, Merritt ran to me holding a violin box, excited, asked, “Mr. Brian, do you still know me? You have given me a violin which I have been treasuring until today! Today, I can give back this violin to you without regret …” It turned out that he was “Mr. Ram’s nephew Michael!”
Tears welled up in my eyes.

The small town of Hay, on the River Wye, sits between England and Wales. It was a quiet place until 1961. That year, a man named Richard Booth came back from a trip to the US with a lot of secondhand books. He bought the town’s old fire station and changed it into a shop to sell them. For the next 10 years, he bought more empty shops and made them into bookshops, too. Hay became the world’s first “book town”.
With the money he made, Booth bought the town’s old castle (城堡). On April 1, 1977, he jokingly called himself King of Hay and said the town was now a country! Some local people thought he was a little crazy.
But he wasn’t crazy at all. The joke made more people come to Hay and buy secondhand books. By the 1980s, there were 1 million books on sale in the town’s over 30 bookshops. Then in 1988 the first literature (文学) festival began in the town. Writers from all over the world came to talk about their new books, along with scientists, reporters and even the President of the US! Now there are book towns in Europe, Australia, Canada and even Malaysia. No one could believe that everything started from the little town with only 1300 people.

All of us may have experienced embarrassing (令人尴尬的) moments. It could have been the time when you pronounced a simple word wrong in class or talked about someone else without realizing that they were right behind you.
Though these embarrassing moments don’t harm us a lot, they come back sometimes and make us always remember the feeling of strong embarrassment. What’s worse, these feelings may last for years. When these kinds of feelings come back, they are known as a “cringe attack (羞愧综合症)”.
Why do “cringe attacks” still appear in our daily lives though the things happened weeks, months, or even years ago? According to researchers, our brains catch feelings that can be easily noticed. The stronger the feeling is, the longer we will remember it. If you have a highly embarrassing moment, no matter what it is, your brain will try to catch it.
So how can we deal with this? Well, we can start by trying to be cool about our past. Think that you are not alone in your embarrassment — everyone fails or makes embarrassing mistakes. Instead of just trying to forget what we did, we should try to accept who we were and make changes for the better.
70.Why do we have “cringe attacks”?
A.Because we are cool about our past.
B.Because we remember our feelings for a long time.
C.Because we always have highly embarrassing moments.
D.Because our brains catch feelings that can be easily noticed.
71.How can we deal with embarrassing moments?
A.By sharing our embarrassment with others. B.By looking for others with the same feelings.
C.By accepting who we were and making changes. D.By realizing the harm of embarrassment.
72.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To help us face “cringe attack” correctly.
B.To help us forget what we did.
C.To help us avoid making embarrassing mistakes.
D.To help us describe some embarrassing moments.
