    A
When Central Bucks South became one of the first Philadelphia-area high schools to close due to fear of novel coronavirus exposure in early March, 16-year-old Andrew Chen of 10th grade knew that things were not going to return to normal as quickly as some of his friends hoped.
But still the change from seeing his friends on the swim team during daily practices to learning alone at home was jarring. “I only have three years here at South, and it pains me to see one of them being wasted,” Chen said.
The coronavirus has turned everyone’s life upside down, but for students, the destruction is particularly serious. Schools closed and graduation ceremonies were canceled. Summer plans, like camps and internships(实习), are up in the air.
But right now, many students are trying to stay connected, struggling with misinformation, and figuring out the best ways they can help through online method.
For Josh Harycki, 17, a senior student at the Ship-ley School in Philadelphia, the best way to contribute was to create a “social distancing pledge(承诺)” for young people.
“I saw a lot of younger generations not paying attention,” he said. “They were still going out, hanging out with people. I thought that there had to be a way to reach younger folks, who were probably not watching the news.”
Harycki launched a call to action on social media and then built a website with a map that tracked the locations of people who’d signed the pledge. The site also shares links to accurate sources of information like the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Harycki knows that his friends are worried they can’t connect with their friends in the same way, so he created the social distancing pledge to stress that while everyone might be physically distant, they’re still connected.
“Part of what we’re highlighting is that you might feel like you’re the only one taking this seriously, but our map shows that you’re not alone,” he said.
    36. What does the underlined word “jarring” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A. natural B. necessary C. unpleasant D. reasonable
    37. Why does the author describe Andrew Chen’s experience in the text?
    A. To show the right reaction to the closure of school.
    B. To show how the coronavirus affected students’ lives.
    C. To explain what worried students most when schools closed.
    D. To present the different views of students about the coronavirus.
    38. Who does Harycki mainly want to reach out to?
    A. Friends who are worried and bored. B. Folks taking the coronavirus seriously.
    C. Younger generations trying to contribute. D. Young people who are not aware of the situation.
    39. What’s Harycki’s purpose in creating the “social distancing pledge”?
    A. To show young people that they are still connected.
    B. To order young people that they should stay at home.
    C. To follow those people infected with the coronavirus.
    D. To inform students of latest news about the coronavirus.
C 37. B 38. D 39. B

根据原文第二段中“But still, the change from seeing his friends on the swim team during daily practices to learning alone at home was jarring. “I only have three years here at South, and it pains me to see one of them being wasted,” Chen said.( 尽管如此,从每天在游泳队看到朋友,到独自在家学习,这种变化还是让他感到不适应。
根据原文第一段“16-year-old sophomore Andrew Chen knew that things were not going to return to normal as quickly as some of his peers hoped.(16岁的大二学生Andrew Chen 知道事情不会像一些同龄人所希望的那样迅速恢复正常。)”和第二段的““I only have three years here at South, and it pains me to see one of them being wasted,” Chen said.(陈说:我在巴克斯南只有三年的时间,其中一年被浪费让我很痛苦)”,结合下文“The coronavirus has turned everyone’s life upside down, but for students, the destruction is particularly serious.(新冠肺炎让每个人的生活都发生了天翻地覆的变化,但对学生来说,这种破坏尤其严重。)”
根据原文第六段的““I saw a lot of younger generations not paying attention,” he said. “They were still going out, hanging out with people. I thought that there had to be a way to reach younger folks, who were probably not watching the news.(“我看到很多年轻一代没有关注这一点,”他说。“他们仍然出去,和人们一起出去玩。我想得有个办法接触到那些可能没在看新闻的年轻人。”)”可知,Harycki对那些没有意识到这种情况的年轻人更感兴趣。故选D项。
    【39题详解】
细节理解题。根据原文倒数第二段“Harycki knows that his friends are worried they can’t connect with their friends in the same way, so he created the social distancing pledge to stress that while everyone might be physically distant, they’re still connected.

    We Are Cyborgs
RoboCop, the Bionic Woman, Darth Vader—what do these characters have in common? They are all cyborgs—humans who are made more powerful by advanced technology. You might think that cyborgs exist only in fiction, or are a possibility only in the distant future. But cyborg technology already exists.
The word “cyborg” was first used in 1960 and defined as an organism(有机体) “to which external parts have been added for the purpose of adapting to new environments”. According to this definition, an astronaut in a spacesuit is an example of cyborg, as the spacesuit helps the astronaut adapt to a new environment—space. More recently, the word has evolved(进化)to refer to human beings who have mechanical body parts that make them more than human.
Although super-humans like RoboCop are not yet a reality, advances in real-life cyborg technology allow some people to compensate(弥补)for abilities they have lost, and give other people new and unusual abilities. An example is filmmaker Rob Spence and his bionic eye. Spence injured one of his eyes in an accident. A camera was implanted(移植)in his prosthetic eye. The eye is not connected to his brain or optic nerve(视神经), but it can record what he sees. Spence has used his camera eye to record interviews for a documentary about people with bionic body parts.
Some types of cyborg technology replace a lost ability by connecting directly to a person’s nerves. Michael Chorost completely and suddenly lost his ability to hear in July of 2001. Two months later, doctors placed a cochlear(耳蜗)implant, a kind of computer, inside his skull. This type of implant connects to auditory nerves and allows a deaf person to hear again. Around the world, over 300,000 people have now been fitted with cochlear implants.
These examples of cyborg technology have enabled people to enhance or change their abilities and improve their lives. But does everyone want to use cyborg technology? It might be too late to decide. Cyborg scientist Amber Case argues that most of us are already cyborgs. Anyone who uses a computer or a smartphone, Case claims, is a cyborg. Consider the data that you have in your smartphone. It keeps information for you so you don’t have to remember it: notes, phone numbers, email addresses, messages. It also allows you to communicate with friends and family via telephone, text messages, email, and social networks.
The potential benefits of cyborg technology are evident, but can this new technology be harmful, too? Could we become too dependent on cyborg technology—and become less than human? These still remain questions.
    40. According to the passage, the cyborg ________.
    A. is similar to human beings B. took root in fiction characters
    C. first appeared in space industry D. has some device attached to the body
    41. Among the following, which one can be considered as an “evolved cyborg”?

    Chernobyl’s Strange Charm
1 The film festival is frozen for lockdown (隔离), so how are independent filmmakers to do their business? Cultures of Resistance Films has released this documentary, which deserves a lot of attention.
2 The film Stalking Chernobyl (切尔诺贝利) is exciting and sensitive exploration of how ordinary people are reclaiming (改造) the site of the world’s worst nuclear accident.
3 In 1970, near the Ukraine-Belarus border, ground was broken for the Chernobyl nuclear complex and the neighboring workers’ city of Pripyat. Chernobyl was constructed in a worrying rush, but Pripyat was appreciated by many who lived there. It was a comfortable, well-designed and familyfriendly city full of trees and roses. It had good public transport, a river to walk in, excellent day care and schools, and so on.
4 On 26 April 1986, Chernobyl’s No. 4 reactor (核反应堆) exploded. People escaped from Pripyat and a 30-kilometer-radius exclusion zone (禁区) was established while people fought — and died — to prevent a further disaster.
5 The zone is still in place, but it can be visited. I got to walk around inside of it four years ago, during the depths of winter. Guides showed us the main sites under snow, fed us in Chernobyl’s very large and empty canteen, and led us through Pripyat, already half-covered by surrounding forest. It was lonely and cold. There were wolves.
6 Since then, the number of visitors to the exclusion zone has doubled each year. That’s 40,000 people, now walking about the place aimlessly.
7 With them come problems and annoyances. Visitors build fires at night with local wood, not realizing how much radiation they are releasing. Tourists dressed up the sites to get better photos. The dolls you find littering an abandoned school are dropped there by tourists and so are half the books.
8 Stalking Chernobyl’s great strength is that it doesn’t rush to judgment. Isn’t leaving a doll here a little like living a wreath (花环)? Since when was it wrong to want to explore?
9 Old citizens in the zone complain about the cluelessness (无知) of visitors who go into the site secretly. Yet everyone — even the mayor of Pripyat whose job is to keep the zone secure — understands what brings them here.
10 Meeting communities of tourists and guides, we discover that the groups flow into each other. A tourist wants to become a guide, an ex-guide says she will return as a tourist. Several interviewees say the zone is a special place, one that will punish them in some way if they mistreat it.
11 The film doesn’t leave much room to get into the pros and cons (利弊) of nuclear power. To my mind though, director Iara Lee has made something more valuable, and certainly more unusual. She has shown how ordinary people — police officers, base jumpers and festival organizers — are showing love and care, each in their own way, to one of the saddest places on the planet.
12 Stalking Chernobyl had me trusting much more than usual in the ability of people to make the best of their society’s most terrible mistakes
    44. Pripyat was once a city that ________.
    A. was lonely and cold when forests were removed B. travelers love to frequent for its friendliness
    C. offered convenient public transport D. was built in a very short time
    45. From Para. 9 and Para. 10, we can infer that ________.
    A. people would love to revisit the place B. the visitors polluted the area on purpose
    C. everyone understands the charm of Chernobyl D. tourists believe the zone has some magic power
    46. One outstanding feature of Stalking Chernobyl is that it ________.
    A. talk about the pros and cons of the nuclear power
    B. compares the past and the present of this tragic city
    C. blames visitors’ irresponsibility for littering the place
    D. gives viewers enough room to make their own judgment
    47. The author’s purpose of writing this article is to ________.
    A. remind people of the tragedy in Chernobyl
    B. attract the readers’ attention to the new documentary
    C. warn visitors of the potential risk of nuclear radiation
    D. persuade local people to protect their living conditions
C 45. A 46. D 47. B

第十段第一句和第二句“Meeting communities of tourists and guides, we discover that the groups flow into each other. A tourist wants to become a guide, an ex-guide says she will return as a tourist.”(在与游客和导游团体的会面中,我们发现这些团体彼此交融。 故选A。
根据第八段“Stalking Chernobyl’s great strength is that it doesn’t rush to judgment. Isn`t leaving a doll here a little like living a wreath (花环)? Since when was it wrong to want to explore?”(《跟踪切尔诺贝利》的最大优点是它不急于做出判断。
根据第一段最后一句“Cultures of Resistance Films has released this documentary, which deserves a lot of attention.”(文化抵抗电影公司推出了这部纪录片,值得大量关注。)
    Thank You, Ma’m
    by Langston Hughes
She was a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it but hammer and nails. It had a long strap (带子), and she carried it hung across her shoulder. It was about eleven o’clock at night, and she was walking alone, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse. The strap broke with the single tug the boy gave it from behind. But the boy`s weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance so, instead of taking off full blast (尽全力) as he had hoped, the boy fell on his back on the sidewalk, and his legs flew up. The large woman simply turned around and kicked him right square in his blue-jeaned sitter. Then she reached down, picked the boy up by his shirt front, and shook him until his teeth rattled.
After that the woman said, “Pick up my pocketbook, boy, and give it here.” She still held him. But she bent down enough to permit him to stoop and pick up her purse. Then she said, “Now ain’t you ashamed of yourself?”
Firmly gripped by his shirt front, the boy said, “Yes’m.”
The woman said, “What did you want to do it for?”
The boy said, “I didn’t aim to.”
    She said, “You a lie!”
By that time two or three people passed, stopped, turned to look, and some stood watching.
“If I turn you loose, will you run?” asked the woman.
    “Yes’m,” said the boy.
“Then I won’t turn you loose,” said the woman. She did not release him.
“I’m very sorry lady, I’m sorry,” whispered the boy.
“Um-hum! And your face is dirty. I got a great mind to wash your face for you. Ain’t you got nobody home to tell you to wash your face?”
    “No’m,” said the boy.
“Then it will get washed this evening,” said the large woman starting up the street, dragging the frightened boy behind her.
He looked as if he were fourteen or fifteen, frail and willow-wild, in tennis shoes and blue jeans.
The woman said, “You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. Least I can do right now is to wash your face. Are you hungry?”
“No’m,” said the being dragged boy. “I just want you to turn me loose.”
“Was I bothering you when I turned that corner?” asked the woman.
    “No’m.”
“But you put yourself in contact with me,” said the woman. “If you think that that contact is not going to last a while, you got another thought coming. When I get through with you, sir, you are going to remember Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones.”
Sweat popped out on the boy`s face and he began to struggle. Mrs. Jones stopped, jerked (猛拉) him around in front of her, put a half-nelson about his neck, and continued to drag him up the street. When she got to her door, she dragged the boy inside, down a hall, and into a large kitchenettefurnished room at the rear of the house. She switched on the light and left the door open. The boy could hear other roomers laughing and talking in the large house. Some of their doors were open, too, so he knew he and the woman were not alone. The woman still had him by the neck in the middle of her room.
She said, “What is your name?”
    “Roger,” answered the boy.
“Then, Roger, you go to that sink and wash your face,” said the woman, and then she turned him loose—at last. Roger looked at the door—looked at the woman—looked at the door—and went to the sink.
Let the water run until it gets warm,” she said. “Here’s a clean towel.”
“You gonna take me to jail?” asked the boy, bending over the sink.
“Not with that face, I would not take you nowhere,” said the woman. “Here I am trying to get home to cook me a bite to eat and you snatch my pocketbook! Maybe, you ain’t been to your supper either, late as it be. Have you?”
“There’s nobody home at my house,” said the boy.
“Then we’ll eat,” said the woman, “I believe you’re hungry—or been hungry—to try to snatch my pocketbook.”
“I wanted a pair of blue suede shoes,” said the boy.
“Well, you didn’t have to snatch my pocketbook to get some suede shoes,” said Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. “You could have asked me.”
    “M’am? ”
The water dripping from his face, the boy looked at her. There was a long pause. A very long pause. After he had dried his face and not knowing what else to do dried it again, the boy turned around, wondering what next. The door was open. He could make a dash for it down the hall. He could run, run, run, run, run!
The woman was sitting on the day-bed. After a while she said, “I were young once and I wanted things I could not get.”
There was another long pause. The boy’s mouth opened. Then he frowned, but not knowing he frowned.
The woman said, “Um-hum! You thought I was going to say but, didn’t you? You thought I was going to say, but I didn’t snatch people’s pocketbooks. Well, I wasn’t going to say that.” Pause. Silence. “I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, son—neither tell God, if he didn’t already know. So you set down while I fix us something to eat. You might run that comb through your hair so you will look presentable.”
In another corner of the room behind a screen was a gas plate and an icebox. Mrs. Jones got up and went behind the screen. The woman did not watch the boy to see if he was going to run now, nor did she watch her purse which she left behind her on the day-bed. But the boy took care to sit on the far side of the room where he thought she could easily see him out of the corner of her eye, if she wanted to. He did not trust the woman not to trust him. And he did not want to be mistrusted now.
“Do you need somebody to go to the store,” asked the boy, “maybe to get some milk or something?”
“Don’t believe I do,” said the woman, “unless you just want sweet milk yourself. I was going to make cocoa out of this canned milk I got here.”
“That will be fine,” said the boy.
She heated some lima beans and ham she had in the icebox, made the cocoa, and set the table. The woman did not ask the boy anything about where he lived, or his folks, or anything else that would embarrass him. Instead, as they ate, she told him about her job in a hotel beauty-shop that stayed open late, what the work was like, and how all kinds of women came in and out, blondes, redheads, and Spanish. Then she cut him a half of her ten-cent cake.
“Eat some more, son,” she said.
When they were finished eating she got up and said, “Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes. And next time, do not make the mistake of latching onto my pocketbook nor nobody else’s—because shoes come by devilish (邪恶的) like that will burn your feet. I got to get my rest now. But I wish you would behave yourself, son, from here on in.”
She led him down the hall to the front door and opened it. “Good-night! Behave yourself, boy!” she said, looking out into the street. The boy wanted to say something else other than "Thank you, ma’am” to Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, but he couldn’t. In fact, he barely managed to say “Thank you” before she shut the door. And he never saw her again.

故填that。
故填which/that。
故填to express。

    Yours,
    Li Hua
Dear Jim,
Learning you are spending this Saturday with my family for a homestay to expand your understanding of Chinese culture, I’m writing to sincerely tell you the arrangement of the day
Guided by my father, a distinguished art teacher, you will drink in the beauty of various elegant Chinese painting styles online in the morning. More importantly, you will embrace the opportunity of mastering some Chinese painting skills. Additionally, with the help of my mother and grandmother, you will get involved in the process of making traditional Chinese food — dumpling — for lunch, which is the best way to get more exposure to Chinese culture and learn Chinese efficiently. What’s worth mentioning is that my mother can really do well in paper-cutting. As a consequence, you are bound to experience an entirely new taste of Chinese culture in the afternoon.
We are looking forward to your coming. I guarantee it will never fail to be a worthy experience.
    Looking forward to your reply.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
