Can plants eat people? Probably not, but there are many plants that eat meat. Some of them are big and they can eat small animals. One famous meat eating plant is the Venus flytrap（捕蝇草）.

The Venus flytrap is a very strange plant. It grows in dry parts of the United States. Its leaves are like the pages of a book, they can open and close very quickly. Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If a fly（苍蝇）touches one of the hairs, the leaves will close quickly. The fly cannot get out. In about half an hour, the leaves press the fly until it is dead. Then the plant covers the fly. Slowly the plant eats the fly.

Why do plants do it?

Most plants get what they need from the sun, the air and the ground. In some places, the ground is very poor. It doesn’t have all these important things, but animal meat has a lot of these important things. So some plants eat meat to get what they need. Tom and Mike were good friends, they began to work in a company together the same year. They both worked hard. Fraser Island is in Queensland, Australia, about 200 kilometers north of Brisbane. It is about 120 kilometers long and 240 kilometers wide. It is a very important island because it is completely made of sand. In fact, it is the largest sand island  in the world. There is no airport on the island, but there is a long beach along the east coast. Planes arrive and leave from here.

The sand makes unusual shapes. There are hills made of sand called sandblows. Nothing grows on them. They move one or two meters a year from the northwest towards the southeast of the island, getting bigger and bigger. At other places on the island, such as Rainbow Gorge, The Cathedrals and Red Canyon, the sandy rocks have different colors. Sometimes the rocks are so brown that they turn the sea brown, like coffee.

Surprisingly, the sandy island has a lot of different plants and animals. There are dark forests—eucalyptus woods, beautiful flowers and over a hundred lakes. Minoru Yamasaki was a well-known American architect. He was born in 1912 in Seattle, Washington. His parents came from Japan. Minoru went to college to study architecture. Every summer he worked in a fish factory to help pay for college. Often he worked from four o’clock in the morning till midnight. He slept in a room with 100 other men. Later in life, Yamasaki remembered these times and was always good to his workers.

Yamasaki sometimes dreamed about his work. Once he woke up at three o’clock in the morning. He remembered a building was in his dream. He got up and started to draw. He used a new design for the buildings. These buildings are now the Century Plaza Hotel, and Tower in Los Angeles, California.
