(2021年6月,浙江高考,Para.1)The pay day arrived at last.I was delighted to finally get the payment after I worked hard for two weeks. On the way home full of excitement, I thought about how to make use of the “huge” sum of money. “I needed a new football in the future. ” I whispered to myself.Approaching my house, I noticed my dad and mom standing beside the old truck of my family, looking sad. It seemed as if something wrong had happened... ...
【分析】续写第一段中的“On the way home full of excitement”表明了故事主人公心情非常好,但是当面对新的问题“my dad and mom standing beside the old truck of my family, looking sad”时,故事主人公内心开始出现冲突与疑问,这就反映在“something wrong”上面。
    “感到一阵 ……”:feel a flush of...= feel a wave of...= feel a feeling/sense of...[joy(高兴), excitement(兴奋), pride (骄傲), anger(愤怒), rage(狂怒), panic(惊慌), alarm(惊慌) , terror(恐惧), horror(恐惧), fear(恐惧), unease (不安), sorrow (悲伤), sadness(悲伤), grief(悲伤), embarrassment(尴尬), disappointment(失望), shame(羞愧), guilt(愧疚)]。
例如:She felt a wave of panic, but forced herself to leave the room calmly.
(2021年1月,浙江高考,Para.2)The video was posted online the Monday before Halloween.I looked just like a pumpkin head in it. Embarrassed and a little annoyed, I fled to my room, but Mom stopped me. “You haven’t read the comments yet.” I scrolled down the screen and marveled at the stories the viewers shared about Halloween.
(Embarrassed and a little annoyed),但当听力母亲的话之后,主人公开始阅读网上的评论,这又将主人公引向另一情境,结果主人公内心又起了变化(marveled)。
    (1)心里想: think /say to oneself
(2)害怕;恐慌:with fear /panic /terror; tremble; shiver; shake; quake; tremble with fear; be seized with panic; scream with panic/terror; freeze/shake with terror

(2021年,新高考I卷,Para.2)The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect. The children said loudly, “Happy Mother’s Day!” Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again.
    【分析】续写第二段中,当双胞胎叫醒母亲(woke their mother up)后,母亲的动作首先有“saw”和“was very surprised”,之后在双胞胎发出节日问候“Happy Mother’s Day”时,母亲的动作有“hugged”和“kissed”。
(1)常用词语:open one’s mouth; widen one’s eyes; rise to one’s feet; jump to one’s feet; shout at the top of one’s lung; reach out(伸出手)
Having passed the exam, he was so happy that he was at a loss what to do.
She opened the gift with her hands shaking slightly.
(2018年6月,浙江高考, Para.1)Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. My horse turned to the left to avoid the little rabbit as I held on tightly and tried not to fall. Then my dad turned around and shouted, “Hold on!” All of a sudden the horse began to run. My dad tried to keep up behind us. For a few minutes my horse slowed down to a trot and then stopped beside a river. I looked around and realized that we were way off the track.
But bad luck for sb, ...
She tried her best, but in vain.
Sb did sth, wondering what to do next.
Sb did sth, not knowing what to do next.
(2020年7月,浙江高考,Para.2)At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. My heart leaped with joy as I knew we were likely to be saved. Elli used pepper spray again to buy us enough time. But this time the bear became more alert. He regarded us with the merciless necessity of hunger, so we throw all the food we have. He then turned away and started devouring. As we were climbing the rope ladder, Elli prayed like thousand times to show thankfulness of being safe and sound.
(My heart leaped with joy),并且当再次遇到熊的攻击时,主人公就又有了新的想法(we throw all the food we have),这将故事的冲突与发展带到另一个情境中;此外,当获救后,主人公又开始感谢(Elli prayed like thousand times to show thankfulness of being safe and sound)。
It suddenly occurred to sb that...=It hit sb that...=It struck sb that...=It dawned on sb that...
(2017年6月,浙江高考,Para.2)A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived. They found the dangerous situation, where three men circled the wolf. Mac's friends also jumped off their bicycles and joined the fight with the wolf. More and more cars stopped. Some drivers took out the sticks from the cars, and some took out the knives, even the guns towards the wolf. In the meanwhile, the wolf might feel the people's threats around, so it began to step back slowly. Soon, it ran away off the road and disappeared in the distance.
(Mac's friends also jumped off their bicycles/ More and more cars stopped),故事中的人物有了一系列与狼对抗的动作,如“circled the wolf”“took out the sticks from the cars”“took out the knives”等,这些将故事中人狼对峙的冲突进一步推向高潮。

    (1)鼓起勇气 (做某事):take /gather /one’s courage (to do sth)
    (2)毫不犹豫/选择:without a second thought/without delay/without hesitation/having no choice

(2022年1月,浙江卷, Para.2)One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease. I felt so sorry to hear that and I thought I should visit him in any case. He was a little surprised to see me when I stepped into his ward with some flowers and fruits. I offered to do the rest work of our project and he invited me to share my ideas to perfect it. We began to work as a fine team and finally finished our project on time. Our hard work paid off and Dr. Henderson’s was very satisfied with our wonderful findings. From this project, we also learned the significance of teammates. Just as the saying goes, one person can go far, but a group of persons can travel farther.
(We began to work as a fine team and finally finished our project on time),这引发了主人公的反响,并且主人公的这种体验不断地深入(从“we also learned the significance of teammates”到“a group of persons can travel farther”),充分展现了主人公内心的矛盾冲突从不断激化到出现转机、再到一步步迎刃而解的过程。

    Random Acts of Kindness
I was driving along Clarendon Street in South Melbourne on my way to Castlemaine to visit my parents. As I stopped at a traffic light, I noticed a man lying on a bench seat on the footpath beside the road. It was early evening and his rough appearance and the fact that he was holding a bottle wrapped in newspaper confirmed my immediate suspicions — he was a drunk.
As soon as I saw him, I felt a strong feeling of sympathy for him. But like so many other people, I had other places to be and other things to do. As I watched, I saw two policemen approach and instantly I felt relieved. After all, it was their responsibility to clean up the streets and make sure men like him got a chance to be somewhere safe for the night. As I sat waiting for the traffic lights to turn green, I couldn’t believe what I saw. The two police walked around and when they reached the man, both of whom turned their heads the other way, as if not to see, and walked right past. Suddenly, a firm belief streamed through my mind, “Life is never so busy that there is no time to serve.”
Right then I looked up and the traffic lights turned green — and I had a decision to make. I knew that if I drove off, I would have no peace, so I turned left, drove around the block, parked the car and walked back to the man. As I approached him, I felt completely unconfident to deal with the situation and even a little foolish. What was I going to say? What was I going to do? At the very least I could drive him home — if he had a home. I found him sleeping soundly and at first, he didn’t respond to me at all, so I reached out and gently shook him awake.

At first, Michael Surrell didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors’ home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house in Allentown, Pennsylvania, when they got a call from one of his daughters, “The house next door is on fire!” He went to investigate. That’s when he saw two women and a girl hysterical (歇斯底里的) on their porch.
“The baby’s in there!” one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, instinctively ran inside. The baby was 8-year-old Tiara Roberts, the woman’s granddaughter and a playmate of Surrell’s three youngest kids, then 8, 10, and 12. The other two on the porch were Tiara’s aunt and cousin.
Entering the burning house was like “running into a bucket of black paint” Surrell says. The thick smoke caused him to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been hazardous for anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (慢性阻塞性肺疾病), they were life-threatening. He was the last person who should have run into a burning building—he has lung disease. But that didn’t stop him.
After a few minutes in the smoke filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath. “Where is Tiara?” he asked desperately. “The second floor.” her aunt shouted back.
Surrell knew he couldn’t hold his breath for long. So he uttered a little prayer, “Well, Lord, this is it. You gotta help me, because I’m not coming out without that little girl.” Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time.
The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar layout to his, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath.
“Baby girl, where are you?” His throat and lungs burned as if he’d breathed in fire instead of the smoke and soot (烟灰) in the air. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a weak but distinct voice emerged. Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl. An ominous thought crossed his mind: I’m probably gonna die up here.

Neesha, an 8-year-old golden retriever, is a lucky dog. After spending a fortnight on her own without food or real shelter, the tough dog was accidentally spotted by a couple, who in spite of the cold weather, were hiking the range and came across her.
Two weeks earlier, Neesha’s owners had taken her and their other dog, a German shepherd named Harley, for some outdoor exercise. Frightened by a deer, both dogs ram away. Harley found his way back to the parking lot the next day, but Neesha did not.
The family made a thorough search. They left a laundry basket of unwashed clothing near the spot where they’d last seen Neesha in the hope that she’d head straight towards the familiar smell marker. They even turned to the Internet for help in finding Neesha—but there was still no sign of her.
“We posted our experience on social media. Then a weekend later, we were still looking for her. We were starting to give up hope,” said the pet’s owner Erina O’Shea Goetelen told The Irish Times.
Eventually, the family began to accept that Neesha might not be coming home. “We just thought she is 8, and it’s been two weeks. There was no way she could survive.“
Doctors Ciara Nolan and Jean Francois Bonnet must truly be crazy hikers. They braved the elements on the freezing day when the couple decided to reach one of Wicklow’s peaks. As they neared the top, Nolan was shocked to see a dog shaking in the snow.
“She was frightened, freezing cold. She didn’t have enough energy to bark or stand, ”Bonnet said in an interview. “We tried to get her to walk, but she couldn’t stand. So we covered her with our spare clothes and gave her some food.”

My family’s house was close to a road. And on the far end of the road stood a big tree. My parents, together with me, often crossed the road to the big tree to have fun with our neighbors. But I wasn’t allowed to cross the road to go there by myself for my safety.
One day, for some reason, the big tree would be cut down. It was just before dinner time. A large crowd of neighbors gathered at the far end of the road to watch the falling of this tree. I watched from my house as the tree, tied with ropes, was lowered down. Soon, the huge tree fell safely to the ground with a big sound. But the kids and grown - ups didn’t leave. They moved closer to stay around this wonderful old tree.
Like them, I wanted to touch the tree with my hands and say good - bye. But I was only five years old and wasn’t allowed to cross the busy road alone. But as I became sadder when watching the tree nearly disappear, I thought to myself, “What’s the worst thing that could happen?” I didn’t see any cars coming, so I ran across the road to say good - bye to the fallen tree.
After standing around and talking with some of the neighbors, I realized that I had stayed there too long. “I am late for dinner, and I’m in trouble.”I told myself. Without even thinking, and without seeing if there were any cars coming, I dashed out between two parked cars and raced toward the other side of the road.
I didn’t see a car rushing forward from the other end of the road. And the driver didn’t expect I’d cross the road at that moment. When spotting me, he tried to stop his car, whose tires produced loud and unpleasant noises. But it was too late.

It’s hard to talk to dads sometimes. The roles we often expect our fathers to play—protector, provider—can make them difficult to understand. That’s how it was with my dad. He came to Canada at the age of ten and settled in an immigrant community. He was never much of a talker. He rarely drank. He didn’t tell stories about himself at the dinner table or when we went for walks in the park. He was a private person and seemed to want to stay that way.
It seemed impossible to ask him questions about his early life before I was born—his early hopes and dreams, his loves and heartbreaks, let alone share my own feelings with him. I didn’t want to threaten the integrity (完整) of his hard shell. I had gotten used to it, and it made me feel secure.
But when my relationship with my wife and career took a hit a year ago, things had to change. I was facing serious problems about my own nature, and I wanted to know whether he had faced them too, and I desperately needed to know how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine.
In a severe moment of desperation, it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key. An email can be crafted slowly and carefully. He’d be up in his office-a comfortable place filled with bookshelves, dusty CD-ROMs and piles of old newspapers. I’d be at my desk in an apartment 20 minutes away. So I could speak at a comfortable distance and give him room to adjust.
So I wrote to him. I told him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer, if he felt like it, and to share something about himself, something that would give me much-needed perspective on my life, especially on relationship and career.
Two weeks later, his response showed up in my email box.

I closed the email and started to cry.

He woke up, staring at me angrily. The smell of alcohol on his breath was overwhelming and I stepped back. I can’t remember exactly what I said to him — probably something no better than, “Mate, are you OK?” Still lying on the bench seat, the man went quiet, looked up and fixed his eyes on mine. Then his eyes filled with tears and he said to me, “God sent you, didn’t he?” A little surprised, the only reply I could think of was, “Well... yes, he asked me to take you home”.
Much to my relief, the man agreed to get into my car. While driving him home, he wept and poured out the sorrows of his heart. Suffering multiple tragedies, he turned to the only source of comfort he knew: the bottle. I patiently comforted him that everyone would encounter various kinds of difficulties. If we faced them positively, all the difficulties would disappear. At his door, he thanked me sincerely and promised not to drink again. From the steady look in his eyes, I learnt a lesson: If life becomes hard, soften it with random acts of kindness.

Finally he touched something. A shoe, then an ankle. He finally came to her. He pulled Tiara toward him gently but quickly. She had already passed out and wasn’t breathing. He took her into his arms and managed to stand up. He felt the heat of the flames on his cheeks. Turning around, he fought through the smoke and ran blindly into the blackness. The next thing he knew, he was at the front door, then outside. Surrell put Tiara down on the porch.
A voice told him, “You have to breathe for her.” He started CPR—the first time he’d ever done so though he knew a little about it. The women stood behind him, praying anxiously. Soon a soot-filled cough came from Tiara’s throat. Surrell gave five more breaths. She coughed again. Her eyelids moved a bit. He gave one final breath. She opened her eyes and took a breath on her own. Their eyes met. Surrell hugged her tight and said, “Uncle’s got you.” Though exhausted, he smiled with relief.

Bonnet lifted Neesha onto his back for the long path down the mountain. After the dog and the man fell several times, Bonnet thought of a good way to hold Neesha. He wrapped her in a scarf. As soon as they reached level ground, the couple took the dog to an animal rescue shelter. The dog lost a great deal of weight and was very weak, but surprisingly except for a few cuts and scrapes, the tough dog was in good condition. The couple contacted her owner via the information on the Internet.
Neesha’s owners could hardly believe it when they learned their dog had been found alive. “We had thought we would have lost her forever and were very sad. But now, we are so relieved and happy,“ Erina said. “Thousands of words can’t express our gratitude to them for their great efforts to bring Neesha back home. “They are so nice. Neesha is really a lucky dog,” said the excited woman. A random act of love may make the world a warmer place.

Before knowing what had happened, I was struck down. At the moment I was knocked down, I let out an instinctive scream. My neighbors heard me screaming, and people ran around me. My parents came, too, very worried about me, but they didn’t dare move me. When the driver got out of the car, he kept apologizing to me. I lay weak on the ground and just wanted to rest, so I said nothing. Someone called the police and an ambulance came and rushed me to the hospital.
At the hospital, it was discovered that luckily I was not seriously injured. During the days when I was in hospital, my parents stayed with me every day. My kindergarten classmates often came to play games with me. The driver who knocked me down sent me an apology card, flowers and my favorite snack. The driver said, “I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to do it. Please forgive me.” I told the driver it was my fault, too. I didn’t see what was going on in the road and ran out. That’s why I got hit.” The driver thanked me for forgiving him.

Two weeks later; his response showed up in my email box. It was a scanned document. Apparently, my dad had carefully considered my message, reached back into his memory and crafted a response. In the letter, he shared his history of love, longing, self-doubt, fears and struggles in life. He also offered me some practical suggestions on how to handle my relationship and career. While reading, I got the sense that it must have been really tough for my dad to settle down in a new country at an early age. I was also impressed by the great perseverance he showed in the face of difficulty.
I closed the email and started to cry. I cried because I wished I had opened up earlier but was grateful it wasn’t too late. I cried because in the midst of my own struggles, his letter instantly put me at ease. And I cried because in the end, it was so simple: I just had to hit “Send”. We’ve since had many exchanges. My problems haven’t been magically solved, but getting to know my dad better—and learning to love him more—has made the tough stuff more manageable and life sweeter. It’s hard to talk to dads sometimes, but I’m glad that I found a way to talk to mine.
