It was a beautiful tribute, especially in these times f catastrphic teacher shrtages.
Spending that Sunday in the park with Mr. C was nthing shrt f magic. It was a reminder f all that is prmising and pssible in public educatin, including a teacher whse rare emtinal hnesty culd be appreciated and hnred decades later. It als brught t mind Maya Angelu’s saying “Peple will frget what yu said and did, but never frget hw yu make them feel.” He made me and thers in the park feel heard and seen.
Mr. C changed my perceptin f myself. Rather than seeing myself as a lser cheerleader wh culdn’t cmpete with the smart kids, I realized hw much I lved learning. His histry class was s interesting. In his classes abut the Persians, Greeks, and Rmans, extra credits can be earned fr creativity. During earthquake drills, we cunted n Mr. C t scream his head ff in mck terrr.
It shuld cme as little surprise that I’d value the rle f teachers in my life. Bth f my parents taught; s did my siblings, aunts, uncles and cusins. The link between eating well and gd health has lng been clear, says David Eisenberg, a nutritin specialist at the Harvard Schl f Public Health. Heart disease, which has a direct cnnectin t diet, is America’s biggest killer. Rughly tw-fifths f American adults are clinically bese, and ver 14% suffer frm diabetes. The right fd can help patients avid ging back t hspital. Yet dctrs themselves have ften been slw t recgnise the need t encurage healthy eating, says Dr Eisenberg. Mst health care remains curative, rather than preventive.
A decade ag Henry Frd Hspital in West Blmfield, utside Detrit, pened a teaching kitchen where staff culd help patients plan affrdable, healthy meals and learn hw t ck them. If yu’ve ever emerged frm the shwer r returned frm walking yur dg with a clever idea r a slutin t a prblem yu’d been struggling with, it may nt be an unusual thing.
Rather than cnstantly wearing yurself ut at a prblem r desperately seeking a flash f inspiratin, research frm the last 15 years suggests that peple may be mre likely t have creative breakthrughs r insights when they’re ding a habitual task that desn’t require much thught—an activity in which yu’re basically n autpilt. This lets yur mind wander r engage in spntaneus cgnitin r “stream f cnsciusness” thinking, which experts believe helps recllect unusual memries and generate new ideas.
“Peple always get surprised when they realize they get interesting, nvel ideas at unexpected times because ur cultural narrative tells us we shuld d it thrugh hard wrk,” says Kalina Christff, a cgnitive neurscientist at the University f British Clumbia in Vancuver. “It’s a pretty universal human experience.”
Nw we’re beginning t understand why these clever thughts ccur during mre passive activities and what’s happening in the brain, says Christff. The key, accrding t the latest research, is a pattern f brain activity—within what’s called the default mde netwrk—that ccurs while an individual is resting r perfrming habitual tasks that dn’t require much attentin.
Researchers have shwn that the default mde netwrk (DMN)—which cnnects mre than a dzen regins f the brain—becmes mre active during mind-wandering r passive tasks than when yu’re ding smething that demands fcus. Simply put, the DMN is “the state the brain returns t when yu’re nt actively engaged,” explains Rger Beaty, a cgnitive neurscientist and directr f the Cgnitive Neurscience f Creativity Lab at Penn State University. By cntrast, when yu’re trapped in a demanding task, the brain’s executive cntrl systems keep yur thinking fcused, analytical, and lgical.
A cautinary nte: While the default mde netwrk plays a key rle in the creative prcess, “it’s nt the nly imprtant netwrk,” Beaty says. “Other netwrks cme int play as far as mdifying, rejecting, r implementing ideas.” S it’s unwise t place blind faith in ideas that are generated in the shwer r during any ther perid f mind wandering.
    12. When d peple expect t get an innvative idea accrding t the research?
    A. When ding rutine wrk.
    B. When wrking attentively.
    C. When tackling tugh prblems.
    D. When desperately seeking inspiratins.
What is the cultural perceptin fr getting exciting, unusual ideas?
    Getting by gd luck.
    Getting by great effrts.
    Getting by unexpected accident.
    Getting by universal experience.
    14. Wh is mst likely t get a nvel idea?
    A. A student wh is playing ftball.
    B. A student wh is fcusing n papers.
    C. A student wh is clsely mnitring his research.
    D. A student wh is fully engaged in math questins.
    15. What des the last paragraph imply?
    A. We can get nvel ideas by the default mde netwrk.
    B. we shuld take the idea ppped in the shwer seriusly.
    C. Believe in ideas that are generated by the default mde netwrk.
    D. Think twice befre putting ideas playfully crssing yur mind int practice.

Anxius exam candidates’ prblem is the run-up r preparatin, nt the exam itself.

It therefre seems 22 surprising that thse wh wrry abut tests d systematically 23 than thse wh d nt. Unexpectedly, accrding t research in Psychlgical Science by Maria Thebald, it is nt the pressure f the exam which causes the prblem. It is the 24 pressure.
What Dr Therbald fund was that 25 n the day f the test did nt predict exam perfrmance at all. What predicted it was the level f knwledge a student 26 in the earlier learning activities and the mck (模拟) exam. Thse wh 27 well in these als did well in the real thing, 28 hw anxius they were n the day. What actually 29 students were high levels f anxiety during the weeks befre the exam tk place. The greater a student’s anxiety in the days befre the exam, the lwer his r her knwledge-gain was during that perid, leaving that student with less material t 30 during the exam itself.
This is a psitive discvery, fr it suggests the anxius might achieve better result by adjusting their 31 when revising. Dr. Thebald ntes that test-anxiety is at its wrst when students have lw 32 f success and at the same time knw that passing the exam is 33 imprtant. T reduce this anxiety, she prpses a 34 fr students t cnsider as they revise. First, they can raise their belief in their wn abilities by reminding themselves f just hw much they knw. Secnd, they can 35 the significance f the test by reminding themselves that, while it is imprtant, it is nt a life r death situatin. It really isn’t.
