Feelings are the emotional and physical responses to what we think about and how we react to daily events. Feelings are natural — we can’t stop them from happening. Because we are all different, we respond to feelings in various ways, sometimes positively and sometimes negatively. But if we are aware of our feelings, we can learn to respect ourselves and others.

There are many misunderstandings about feelings. For example, “ Feelings, that womanish stuff. ” Recognizing that feelings are real and natural for everyone is important. Some of us may never agree that feelings are a part of living. It may be difficult for some of us to talk about our feelings. Learning about personal feelings is important in building self-awareness and relationships with others. Most mentally healthy individuals learn to accept feelings, both good and bad.

“Feelings don’t exist, or they are dangerous. So no one should talk about them. ” Refusing to admit feelings can damage relationships. It can also build up emotions to the point when negative behaviors break out, for example, when an angry person hits the table. Not being able to talk to those we respect about our feelings may cause an emotional “shut down ” . Talking about personal feelings with your family may help. But if it doesn’t, you may need to talk about your feelings with someone else.

Instead of denying feelings, it is healthier to talk about them. One of the most important things you can do to create respect in a family is never to deny someone’s feelings. Try to spend time each day, perhaps at the dinner table or in a private chat, talking about feelings. Teach your children by example, like “ I feel afraid that you will be sleepy tomorrow if you don’t go to bed soon. ” Learn to be a good listener and show understanding.

4What is the feature of feelings?

AThey are negative. BThey happen naturally.

CThey are dangerous. DThey exist in women.

5Why does the author mention “ an angry person hits the table ” in Paragraph 3?

ATo tell a story. BTo explain an idea. CTo show a fact. DTo give a definition.

6What is the author’s attitude toward talking about feelings?

    ADoubtful. BNegative. CFavorable. DIndifferent.

7What is the last paragraph mainly about?

AWays of sharing feelings in a family. BEffects of denying someone’s feelings.

CReasons for having respect in a family. DImportance of teaching kids about feelings.

    C

The United States is a nation of car owners. Ninety-five percent of households own a car, and 85 percent of people get to work in one. This lifestyle contributes to congestion (拥堵) on our roads and damages the environment. As autonomous vehicles begin to hit the streets over the next decade or so, it’s believed that all this will change.

Autonomous vehicles will most likely decrease the number and severity of crashes, allow cars to travel more closely together and improve cooperation between vehicles, all of which tend to reduce traffic jams and increase capacity.

However, this future is not certain. To realize the full potential benefits of driverless cars, we will have to act soon to encourage a culture in which transportation is shared. Many people in the automobile industry assume that driverless vehicles will automatically be shared, but there is little evidence that this is true. Most estimates suggest that driverless cars will eventually be only slightly more expensive than traditional cars, which means they’ll be within reach of many consumers, so users are not willing to share rides.

If most people are going to buy into a shared-ride culture, they need to get a significant benefit. Saving a few dollars off the fare isn’t likely to promote the movement significantly. A better benefit would be knowing that you’re going to reach your destination more quickly. The way to make sure of quick passage is to redesign our roads to give priority to ride-sharing autonomous vehicles like building priority lanes. The cost of travel will also be varied based on how efficiently a vehicle uses the roads. Autonomous vehicles carrying more people should get higher priority than those carrying one or none at all.

Decision-makers must push for rewards that encourage the most efficient use of our limited roadway infrastructure (基础设施). The autonomous future is rapidly approaching; it is critical that we act now, while the impacts of autonomous vehicles on traffic jams and emissions are still largely within our control.

8What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?

ATo introduce the topic. BTo inform the severe traffic problem.

CTo condemn America for its huge car households. DTo show the damage of cars to the environment.

9What can we learn from the passage?

AAutonomous vehicles worsen traffic jams on roads.

BAutonomous vehicles are likely to reduce traffic jams.

CSaving some fares contributes to shared-ride significantly.

DMany people have ridden autonomous vehicles to avoid traffic jams.

10Which will be a benefit of sharing autonomous vehicles?

ATo save a large amount of money.

BTo promote the development of science and technology.

CTo redesign roads to prioritize car-shared modes.

DTo allow you to reach your destination much more quickly.

11Which is the best title for the passage?

ADriverless Cars Will Make Our Traffic Problems Worse.

BAutonomous Vehicles Will Make a Difference to Traffic.

CDecision-makers Should Take Some Measures Quickly.

DThe Current Situation of Cars in the United States is Serious.

Heat can kill. It lowers a worker’s ability to concentrate and leads to notable increases in workplace injuries, research suggests.

Yet, for reasons including financial need, workplace pressure and a lack of awareness of the health impacts of high temperatures, many people continue to work past their heat tolerance. Outdoor workers, notably those within the construction and agricultural industry, are the most affected by rising heat. Even the fittest people in the world are impressionable like the Olympic athletes collapsing in the baking heat of Tokyo.

There are some easy ways to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion (热衰竭). Optimizing work hours to avoid workers being out when the sun is at its hottest may have the greatest effect on employee health.

Individualized, wearable sensors could be a useful tool for determining likely heat exhaustion. Early adoption of these devices would be a win-win, according to Dr Jennifer Runkle, an environmental epidemiologist (流行病学家): boosting productivity and reducing injury “while ensuring the health and safety of an ageing workforce and reducing the risk of heat exhaustion”.

Wider take-up of wearable heat sensors by employees, employers and healthcare providers would also help overcome gaps in heat awareness.

“One important finding we discovered in our research with outdoor workers is that there was a mismatch between workers ability to sense heat risk and their actual exposure to extreme heat gained by wearables” , said Dr Runkle.

Another aid could be wearable cooling technology, but such devices are limited in availability. One such device is Sony’s Reon Pocket 2, which it launched in April. A wearable cooling or warming device worn inside clothing, it uses electrical conductors that transfer (转移) heat when electricity is run through them.

There are promising examples of companies taking more responsibility for protecting workers from extreme heat, such as managers of bus drivers in Jinan, China. Responsible employers should be providing drinks and shaded rest areas to outdoor workers.

12What does the underlined word “impressionable” in paragraph 2 mean?

AHighly impressive. BSlightly sensible. CEasily influenced. DHardly evaluated.

13What did Dr Runkle find out?

    AThe workforce was ageing rapidly.

BWearable heat sensors lacked great accuracy.

CEmployers attached little importance to heat exhaustion.

DWorkers’ heat awareness and actual heat were different.

14Why are bus drivers in Jinan mentioned in the last paragraph?

ATo stress the popularity of Reon Pocket 2.

BTo show their employers are responsible.

CTo reveal they are very tolerant of extreme heat.

DTo describe their unbearable pressure of work.

15What can be the best title for the text?

AAdjustments to Work Hours Can Be Life-saving.

BCampaigners Are Calling for Workplace Protection.

CHow Can New Technology Protect Outdoor Workers?

DHow Were Body Temperature Monitors Invented?

    第二节(满分25 分)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My granddaughter Elizabeth lives in Washington state. When she was a rather naive 12 year old,she had spent the summer visiting her father near Atlanta,Georgia. Elizabeth's school was to start in about three weeks,so it was decided that she could stop and visit with us in Texas before returning to Washington just in time to start school.

Our visit would be rather short, but Elizabeth is such a joy that we enjoy every moment that we can share with her.

I can't imagine what the travel agent in Georgia was thinking when she scheduled 12-year-old Lizzy's flights. First, she was to fly from Atlanta to Houston William Hobby Airport, arriving about 9:00 p.m. Then she was to depart for San Antonio about 11:00 p.m. from Houston's George H.W. Bush Inter. Continental Airport. However,Bush is some 25 miles across town from Houston Hobby Airport, and there was no ground transportation available between the two.

The lady who sat next to Liz on the plane learned of the situation and, sensing Liz's worry, gave her a phone card and $10. 00. When Elizabeth called us and explained her situation,we advised her to contact a police officer there at the terminal.

She did. He put her in touch with Ms Joy Fears,a Continental gate agent. Initially,Ms Fears was going to put Elizabeth in a taxi to make the cross-town trip. Liz had $20. 00 or so that her dad had given her upon leaving Atlanta Hartsfield Airport, plus the $10. 00 that her seatmate had given her—enough for the taxi fare to Bush Airport. However,no doubt considering Liz's age and the late hour,Ms Fears decided to show her kindness by taking an enjoyable“do it yourself”approach.

First Ms Fears got a meal voucher(代金券) and got Lizzy fed. Then she proceeded to round up Liz's baggage, then put both the luggage and our granddaughter in her private vehicle. She went so far as to personally deliver Liz to the Continental gate at Bush, and saw to it that she was properly checked in and on her way for the 55 minute flight from Houston to San Antonio.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

We feel very grateful to Liz's seat-mate, the Houston police officer.

    46Dear David,

The students in our class are going to have a climbing this Saturday. We sincerely invite you to join us. We will gather together at the school gate at 8 p. m. Please bring along what you need, for example, food, water and camera. It is expected that we will come back at 2 p. m.

Of course there are lots of benefits from climbing. First of all, everyone can keep in shape as long as he often practices. What's more, you can certainly relax yourself when you are sweating during the climbing. The pain in body can relieve your tense nerves.

    Look forward to your reply.

    Yours

    Li Hua

    47One possible version

We feel very grateful to Liz's seat-mate, the Houston police officer. I especially want to show my appreciation to Ms Joy Fears for seeing that our lovely Elizabeth got to us unharmed. I sent my thanks to Ms Fears, and my daughter contacted Continental Airlines with an “Atta-Girl” for her. My daughter also gave the Houston Police Department an “Atta-Boy” for the officer who assisted Liz that night.

There are many helpful folks who don't get recognition for their kindness. Doing good deeds for other people lets them know that they are important, and the assistance they provide helps people get through their lives in a more enjoyable way. In our family,if each person gets to cultivate his or her strengths,we can work together for the greater benefit of the family. So I would like the world to bear about the generous actions of Ms Joy Fears.
