    I. Teaching aims and learning objectives

    By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

    1. rewrite some adverbial clauses in simple sentences;

    2. rewrite some object clauses in simple sentences;

    3. rewrite some defining relative clauses in simple sentences;

     

    II. Teaching contents

    1. New words and phrases: circle, agreement, possibility, stranger, aware, distance, alien, outer space, as tasty as, remind sb that/of sth, be sure that/about sth, thin air, indoor playgrounds

    2. New structures: Are they sure about the fast speed of space travel?

                   It takes Mars about two Earth years to circle around the Sun once.

     

    III. Focus of the lesson

    Change compound sentences into simple sentences.

     

    IV. Teaching procedures

    A  Using adverbial clauses or simple sentences

    Step 1 Presentation

    1. Change adverbial clauses of time with prepositional phrases

      Neil Armstrong received his student pilot’s licence when he was 16.

    Neil Armstrong received his student pilot’s licence at the age of 16.

    2. Change adverbial clauses of reason with prepositional phrases

    People might float in space because the gravity is low.

     People might float in space because of the low gravity.

    3. Change adverbial clauses of condition with prepositional phrases.

      Humans cannot survive if there is no food, air or oxygen.

      Humans cannot survive without food, air or oxygen.

    Step 2 Practice

    1. I could swim when I was eight years old.

     I could swim at the age of eight.

    2. He went home after he finished his work.

    He went home after finishing his work.

     

    3. He was late for school because it rained heavily.

    He was late for school because of the heavy rain.

    4. You cannot enter the cinema if you don’t have a ticket.

    You cannot enter the cinema without a ticket.

    【设计意图:分别举例、归纳,启发学生如何将含有从句的复合句改写成简单句。】

     

    Step 3 Learning about outer space

    1. Neil Armstrong took his first flight at the age of six.

    2. Yuri Gagarin became the first man to go into outer space when he was 27.

    3. People might move to another planet in the future because of the rapidly increasing population

      on the Earth.

    4. Without fresh food, meals will not be as tasty as they are today.

    5. It would be funny to play football on Mars because the gravity is low.

    6. If there is no special boots, you cannot walk on Mars.

    Step 4 Extension

    1. He got up early so that he could catch the early bus.

    He got up early in order to/so as to catch the early bus.

    2. This hall is so large that it can hold 2000 people.

    This hall is large enough to hold 2000 people.

    B  Using object clauses or simple sentences

    Step 1 Presentation

    1. The smell of the pills reminds them that food on the Earth is tasty.

      The smell of the pills reminds them of the tasty food on the Earth.

    2. Are they sure that space travel will be very fast?

    Are they sure about the fast speed of space travel?

    We can change compound sentences into simple sentences with prepositions like of and about.

    Step 2 Practice

    Change the sentences into simple sentences.

    1. Are you certain that Tom is satisfied with the plan?

    Are you certain about Tom’s satisfaction with the plan?

    I don’t know which one to buy.

    3. I heard she was singing in English.

    I heard her singing in English.

    4. The photos remind me that I have travelled to the UK.

    The photos remind me of my trip to the UK.

    5. Do you understand what I said?

    Step 3 About the planet Mars

    1. Are you aware of the distance between Mars and the sun?

    2. Do scientists agree with the possibility of living on Mars for humans in the future?

    3. Have they thought about the problem of the low gravity on Mars?

    4. Are you aware of the transport on Mars?

    5. I wonder about the number of people who would like to move to Mars?

    6. I think people should know the differences between life on Mars and that on the earth.

    C  Using defining relative clauses or simple sentences

    Step 1 Presentation

    1. People might live in houses which have huge comfortable rooms.

      People might live in houses with huge comfortable rooms.

    2. On Mars you might see people who wear special boots.

      On Mars you might see people in special boots.

    We can change compound sentences into simple sentences with prepositions like with and in.

    Step 2 Curious about Mars

    1. Mars is a planet that has/with an environment similar to that of the Earth.

    2. Astronauts who wear/in space suits and helmets might stay on Mars for hours.

    3. It is difficult to breathe on a planet that has/with much thinner air than that on the Earth.

    4. On Mars there might be people who carry/with air tanks on their backs.

    Step 3 Practice

    1. Change the sentences into simple sentences

    (1) The girl who is wearing a hat is Lucy King.

    The girl with a hat is Lucy King.

    (2) I prefer to stay in a hotel room which has a sea view.

    I prefer to stay in a hotel room with a sea view.

    (3) The man who wears a blue shirt is our English teacher.

    The man in a blue shirt is our English teacher.

    (4) Do you know the girl who is holding two books in her hand?

    Do you know the girl with two books in her hand?

    (5) We saw the glasses that were on the table fall off onto the floor.

    We saw the glasses on the table fall off onto the floor.

    2. Finish Part C2

    T: Replace each of the underlined parts with another expression.
