As a child, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather’s farm in western Pennsylvania. Surrounded by miles of winding stone walls, the house and field provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me.
Since my first visit to the farm, I had wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stone walls
surrounding the houses. My parents would never agree because the walls were so old that some stones were loose and falling. However, my idea to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally I had all my courage to enter the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.
“I want to climb the stone walls.” I said. “Heavens, no! You’ll hurt yourself!” The response was just as I’d
expected. But before I left the room, I was stopped by my grandfather’s loud voice. “Now hold on just a minute.”I heard him say. “Let the boy climb the stone walls. He has to learn to do things for himself.”
“Go,” he said to me, “and come and see me when you get back. ”For the next two and a half hours I climbed
those old walls—and had the time of my life. Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventures. I’ll never forget what he said. “Fred,” he said, smiling, “you made this day a special day just by being yourself. Always remember, there’s only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are.”
Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,
seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains

Wind farms(风电场)and flyovers (立交桥) which block (遮挡) some of the country’s most glorious views
are the biggest threats to Britain's cultural heritage, the president of English Heritage has said. Simon Thurley said his“biggest challenge” was to find ways to stop the buildings of wind farms and other structures from blocking historic buildings and monuments.
He said, “My focus, and the focus of English Heritage, is to design ways that we can judge the effects of
wind farms and other structures. Dr Thurley said the laws to protect monuments and historic buildings were “too old”. Changes were needed to laws so that the views of the listed buildings were protected, he told the audience at the Cheltenham Literature Festival.
Thurley gave the example of Ely Cathedral(大教堂)in Cambridgeshire. He said English Heritage was
fighting plans to build a flyover that would block views of this historic cathedral. “The heritage law we have today was not designed to protect the views of Ely Cathedral.” he said, “It was designed to stop (people) pushing it down.”
Dr Thurley said his another challenge was getting the 1970's concrete (混凝土) buildings listed. “We have to
work out which ones are worth saving because there's a lot of junk,” he said. He added that for years the government ministers had refused to allow them to be listed, and viewed them as monsters, particularly Margaret Hodge, who refused to list any concrete buildings at all when she was Culture Minister.
But the current minister Ed Vaizey had recently agreed to the listing of the “concrete huge building” of
    Preston bus station.

A.there are too many wind farms and flyovers

D.many of the cultural heritages have been damaged
29.Thurley thinks the laws need to be changed to________.
    A.protect monuments and historical buildings
B.let people know more about the heritage
C.protect the views of the listed buildings
D.get used to the new time and situation
30.The underlined word “transferred” in the last paragraph means________.
    A.given B.transported C.recommended D.changed
31.Where is Dr.Thurley's second challenge mainly from?

Barred owls(大林鸮猫头鹰) are a large species native to eastern North America, but they began moving west at the start of the 20th century. By 1973, large numbers of barred owls had arrived in the western state of
Washington. Later they moved south into Oregon and California.
In parts of the Pacific Northwest, the owls are now believed to be causing a drop in the population of a smaller, less aggressive bird: the northern spotted owl. In many ways, the barred owl is the spotted owl's worst enemy. The barred owl has more babies per year and eats the same animals, like squirrels and wood rats. And their numbers are now larger in many parts of the spotted owl's traditional territory(领地).
David Wiens is a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. He and other officials are doing something
unusual to protect spotted owls: killing barred owls. It is an experimental program. More than 2,400 barred owls have already been shot.
Wiens is the son of a well-known bird expert and grew up with the fascination for birds. He has mixed
feelings about the program. "It's a little distasteful, I think, to go out killing barred owls to save another owl species," he says. But he adds, “We knew that barred owls were out competing spotted owls and their numbers were growing too fast."
To catch barred owls, officials put digital(电子的) bird callers on the ground. Then they step back and wait
as several sounds from the devices fill the air. All of this happens in the dark of night. Barred owls dislike other birds in their territory, so they will fly down and chase other owls out. That is when Wiens and his team try to shoot them.
