Barditch High School decided to hold an All-School Reunion. Over 600 people came to the event. There were tours of the old school building and a picnic at Confederate Park. Several former teachers were on hands to tell stories about the old days. Ms. Mabel Yates, the English teacher for fifty years, was one of them.

Some people began to talk in a low voice when Ms. Yates was about to speak. Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to walk away. They wouldn’t like to listen to an old woman who had few kind words for her students and just made them work hard.

Then Ms. Yates started to speak, “I can’t tell you how happy I am to be here. I haven’t seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed you all the way. I have a large collection of newspaper photos of my students. Although I didn’t show up in person, I went to your college graduations, weddings and even the birth of your children, in my imagination.”

Ms. Yates stopped for a little while and started crying a bit. Then she continued, “I thought that if I pushed you as hard as I could, some of you would succeed.” “There is no greater comfort for a teacher than to see the result of his or her years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride for me and I want you to know I love you all deep in my heart.”

Almost all cultures celebrate the end of the year and the beginning of another in some way. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.

In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on December 31st or January 1st. people may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal clothes like tuxedos and evening gowns, and they may drink champagne at midnight. During the first minutes of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the new year by waking up early to watch the sun rise. They welcome the new year with the first light of the sunrise.

It is also a common Western custom to make a New Year’s promise, called a resolution. New Year’s resolutions usually include promises to try something new or change a bad habit in the new year.

Many cultures also do special things to get rid of bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. The doll is filled with old newspapers and firecrackers. At midnight, these dolls are burned to show the bad things from the past year are gone and the new year can start afresh. Other common traditions to keep away bad luck in a new year include throwing things into rivers or the ocean, or saying special things on the first day of the new year.

Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the new year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year’s Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck at New Year. In the United States, some people eat black-eyed peas for good luck but to get good luck for a whole year you have to eat 365 of them.

It’s over three years since I began to learn English. I am glad that I am getting on well with it. I find English very interesting, but quite difficult. When I first started, I thought I had only to remember the new words and learn some grammar. I know little about English idioms. I thought each English word had a word with the same meaning in Chinese. When I learned to say “I see a book on the desk.”, I thought the English “see” was just like the Chinese “kan”. So one day when my teacher asked me, “What are you doing?” I answered, “I am seeing a book.” “That’s wrong,” my teacher said. “You don’t see a book. You read a book. You can’t use an English word like a Chinese one. Be sure not to make the same mistake again.

After that I began to pay more attention to the differences between Chinese and English. For example, in English we say a “high mountain”, but a “tall man”. In Chinese we use the same word “gao” for both. Again in English we say “take part in the sport meeting”, “attend a meeting” and “join the army”, while in Chinese we can use “canjia” for all the three. It’s interesting, isn’t it? So to study English doesn’t only mean hard work, it can be great fun, too! We not only have to pay attention to pronunciation, grammar, spelling and handwriting as well can be improved only in that way!

But all this is only a beginning and I still have a long way to go. I’ll try my best and work even harder than before. I must speak and listen to English more both in and out of class. I must read and write more, too. I must learn English well so that I can work well when I grow up.

    1. When the writer first started learning English, he thought ________.

    A. he knows English idioms

    B. he has read 2002 English words

    C. he had only to remember the new words and learn some grammar

    D. each English word couldn’t find a Chinese word with the same meaning

    2. “I’m seeing a book.” The writer wanted to say “_________”.

    A. I’m looking a book.    B. I’m reading a book.   C. I’m looking for a book.    D. I’m watching a book.

    3. Which is NOT true according to the passage?

    A. To study English only means hard work.

    B. We should pay attention to pronunciation and grammar.

    C. We should read and write more.

    D. We should understand some English idioms.

    4. What does the writer think of learning English?

    A. Difficult and boring.

    B. Difficult but interesting.

    C. Interesting and easy.

    D. Easy but boring.

    5. Which is the best topic of the passage?

    A. How to Study English Well  B. The Importance of English   C. English Idioms     D. Do More Reading

Most people hope to have a memory which helps them succeed in study, work and life. Can memory be improved? Luckily, hundreds of studies in the past 50 years have already given us a definite answer.

A healthy lifestyle keeps your brain young and memory sharp. First of all, it is necessary to have a healthy diet. Eating more food rich in Vitamin B and Vitamin E, such as vegetables and lean meat helps you have a better memory.

Proper exercise provides much needed oxygen for the brain. Running, riding a bike, swimming and even walking two or three times a week are helpful. Moreover, getting enough sleep is important. Only when your brain gets a good rest, can it work well. The healthier your lifestyle is, the better your memory will become, but do not expect a sudden change -- it takes a long time to make a difference.

Memory skills help you remember things better. The following three are the most widely used. Chunking is a way of remembering a piece of information by cutting it into smaller ones. For example, to memorize a ten-digit telephone number 2127983630, you can divide the digits into three groups: first 212, then 798, and lastly 3630. This method is far more effective than remembering a string of 10 digits. Organization means organizing information into groups of the same kind. For example, trees, grass and flowers are plants; tigers, pandas, horses and cows are animals. Imagery is remembering newly learnt information by using your imagination and connecting it with something that you are familiar with.

However, memory skills will hardly work if you don’t understand the information. What’s more, only a regular review can make the memory last long. That is why students are always advised to go over what they have learnt after one day and then after three days, and then use it as regularly as possible.

Human brains are like muscles that need nutrients and exercise to become stronger. If you make a few lifestyle changes and try some memory skills, you can certainly improve your memory.

    1. How many ways of keeping a healthy lifestyle are mentioned in the passage?

    A. Two           B. Three           C. Four         D. Five
    2. Which of the following examples is the use of the skill “organization”?

    A. Remembering the word “happy” by putting it into the group of “feeling”.

    B. Remembering the meaning of the word “red” by connecting it with fire.

    C. Remembering a long and difficult passage by understanding its meaning.

    D. Remembering the post number 0708691 by diving it into 070 and 8691.

    3. According to the passage, why should we review what we’ve learnt?

    A. To use it better every day

    B. To understand it in a better way

    C. To improve memory skills

    D. To remember it for a longer time.

    4. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 means __________.

    A. Imagination

    B. Imagery

    C. Information

    D. memory

    5. What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. Not everyone has a good memory.

    B. Memory skills are not difficult to learn.

    C. Memory can be improved in some ways.

    D. It is important to have a healthy lifestyle.

Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa. It is also the second largest lake in the world. It is an important lake because it is one of the sources for the longest river in the world, the Nile River. Lake Victoria provides a source of water, food, and power for several African countries. Lake Victoria is a big part of African life.
Unfortunately, Lake Victoria has a problem. It is shrinking. There are several power stations at Lake Victoria in Uganda. These are on the Nile River, and besides producing power, they keep the water of the lake at a certain level. For the past forty years, that level has been 11.9 meters. Over the last several years, the water level has dropped by about 2.5 meters. There seem to be several reasons for this drop.

One possible reason is drought. Drought has been very bad in the area since 2000. Lake Victoria gets all of its water from rain, so the drought means less water in the lake.
However, some environmentalists believe that the real problem is the power plants(factories) on Lake Victoria. Uganda depends on those power plants for most of its power, and they made the power plants larger in 2000. Many people believe the power plants have been taking too much water off Lake Victoria. As a result, they have been asked to use less water until Lake Victoria goes back to its old level.
Whether the low water level is caused by drought or power plants, the result is the same. This is already a poor area of Africa, where many people live a really hard life. People, animals and plants around Lake Victoria will suffer even more from low water levels on the lake. Many people need Lake Victoria for fishing or growing food. Fish need the water to live, and animals need it for water.

    1. Lake Victoria is __________.
      A. an important lake in Africa.                            B. the largest lake in the world.
      C. the source of water, food and power for America.         D. the only source for the Nile River.
    2. What does the underlined sentence “It is shrinking” most probably mean?
      A. It is becoming larger.                                B. It is becoming more beautiful.
      C. It is becoming smaller.                               D. It is becoming more useful.
    3. The water level of Lake Victoria is now __________.
      A. 2.5 meters        B. 11.9 meters        C. 14.4 meters        D. 9.4 meters
    4. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
      A. Rain water is the only source for the lake.
      B. There has been little rain in the lake area since 2000.
      C. The power plants in Uganda provide water for the lake.
      D. The power plants in Uganda were made larger in 2000.
    5. According to the passage, how can we solve the problems around Lake Victoria?
      A. People must build more power plants.

    B. More sources of water must be found.
    C. Every country should offer some money to Africa.

    D. All the people living in the area should move to another place.         答:ACDCB
