A “Quick Response Code”, also known as QR code is a type of barcode that Denso Wave developed, a Japanese barcode developer, in 1994.
The use of technology saves people's efforts in labor. In the early 1960s, the economy of Japan entered high economic growth. During this period, supermarkets and convenience stores thrived and were selling a wide variety of goods ranging from food to clothing. To keep up with the demand for checkout counters, cash registers(收银机)were widely used. Due to the heavy workload, cashiers on the checkout counters experienced numbness on their wrists and developed a kind of disease. As a solution to the problem, the Point of Sales (POS) system was developed and included the use of barcodes.
In the long run, developers noticed the problem barcodes held. The limit of 20 alphanumeric characters was not long enough in holding a product's information and the position of how a barcode is scanned leads to scan failures. Denso Wave stepped in and invented a new type of barcode that could hold more information and could be scanned in any scanner direction. Thus, QR code was introduced in 1994 and has made history up to today.
Today, QR codes are generally used in advertising, business, health care, and education. There are two types of QR codes: Static QR codes and Dynamic QR codes. Static QR codes are QR codes that are free and permanent. This type of QR code is not modifiable (可修改的) and therefore cannot change the data stored in the QR code. Dynamic QR codes are QR codes that are modifiable in content and can store more data even after you have printed it into the paper.

    D. To introduce the development of QR codes.
    25. What does the underlined word “thrived” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Remained stable. B. Developed rapidly.
    C. Slowed down. D. Started off.
    26. What problem was POS system intended to deal with?
    A. The lack of counters. B. Barcodes' scan failures.
    C. Cashiers' physical suffering. D. The limited information in barcodes.
    27. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
    A. The types of QR codes.
    B. The importance of QR codes.
    C. The advantages of Dynamic QR codes.
    D. The characteristics of Static QR codes.
    C
In 2011, conservationists moved eight Rothschild's giraffes to Longicharo Island in Western Kenya. The scientists hoped the separated area would save the endangered animals from poachers(偷猎者)and allow their numbers to multiply. However, the heavy rainfall in August 2020 caused the lake water levels to rise sharply, cutting the area off from the mainland and reducing the once large habitat to just about eight nacres. As the island continued to become smaller, it became urgent to move the animals to a safer habitat.
While giraffes can swim, the many Lake Baringo's crocodiles meant the animals would have to be ferried across. In December 2020, the rangers teamed up with Save Giraffes Now and the Kenya Wildlife Society (KWS) to construct a barge(驳船), which was designed specially to carry tall, heavy giraffes.
Their first task was to save Asiwa, a female giraffe, who was left alone in part of the island with no food sources. However, convincing the gentle giant to get on the barge was not easy. “The giraffes don't know that you're trying to help them,” David O'Connor says, president of Save Giraffes Now. “They think you're an attacker. So they're really trying to work against you, which makes it even harder.”
After several attempts to help Asiwa aboard the barge with mangoes and other treats failed, the scientists had no choice but to anesthetize(麻醉)her. While the technique is frequently used to transport large animals, it is not the preferred method for giraffes since the change in blood pressure could damage their brains, or they could get choked. To prevent any harm, the rescuers gave the giraffe light anesthesia and then quickly guided her onto the barge. To ensure Asiwa would not panic, they covered her head with big cloth and put socks in her ears to block out sound.
“The wonderful part was watching her gently walk off the barge once the blindfold was released as if nothing had happened,” says photographer Ami Vitale who documented the rescue.
    28. What made Longicharo Island unfit for giraffes to live on?
    A. The heavy rainfall. B. The cruel poachers.
    C. The severe climate. D. The decreasing giraffe population.
    29. Why was it difficult to get giraffes on board?
    A. They were heavy. B. They were lonely.
    C. They were hungry. D. They were fearful.
    30. What can we know about Asiwa?
    A. She tried to attack the rescuers. B. She showed no interest in treats.
    C. She experienced a peaceful move. D. She was in poor health condition.
    31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. A Dangerous but Successful Move
    B. Trapped Endangered Giraffes Were Rescued
    C. Giraffes' New Life on Longicharo Island
    D. Rothschild's Giraffes Forced to Leave Home
    D
Someday it may be possible for people to deal with their food allergies(过敏)simply by brushing teeth. A New York City-based company has started a trial to test this concept in a small group of peanut-allergy sufferers. The idea is to expose users to small doses(剂量)of an allergen daily, in order to build tolerance to it
“Tying this treatment to a daily routine should help allergy sufferers keep up with regular treatment,” say researchers at Intrommune Therapeutics, which developed the toothpaste. The product may also do a better job than existing therapies(疗法). Several years ago, William Reisacher, an allergist at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City, was standing in front of a mirror brushing his teeth. “I saw all the foam(泡沫)in my mouth going into all the areas I wanted it to go,” he says. “If food proteins could be delivered as a toothpaste, that would get the treatment to the right cells and make it a routine daily habit.”
“William told me this crazy idea he had, and I thought it was perfect,” says Michael Nelson, cofounder of Intrommune. “The newly started trial of the toothpaste will include 32 peanut-allergic adults to test how well they tolerate increasing doses. Future trials may test toothpastes that contain several different allergens.”
Other allergists support the toothpaste concept, though some worry about dose control and safety. “When there are sores in a patient's mouth or after a patient loses a tooth—allergens may have direct access to the bloodstream, which increases the risk of systemic allergic reactions,” says allergist Sakina Bajowala.“Safety is something I'm going to be watching closely,” she says. “But if they find something that can be commercialized and made accessible, and if they can prove it's safe and effective, then fantastic.”
    32. How does the new toothpaste help users deal with allergies?
    A. By transforming allergens. B. By getting them used to allergens.
    C. By preventing allergen exposure. D. By helping users identify allergens.
    33. What inspired William Reisacher to develop the new toothpaste?
    A. Other similar products. B. His own life experience.
    C. Some existing therapies. D. Allergy sufferers' concerns.
    34. What's Sakina Bajowala's attitude to the new toothpaste?
    A. Doubtful. B. Hopeful. C. Cautious. D. Opposed.
    35. What can we infer from the text?
    A. The new toothpaste proved safe and effective.
    B. Food allergy used to be an incurable problem.
    C. Adults are the major target of the new toothpaste.
    D. The new toothpaste may be able to treat various allergies.

    第二节(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a warm summer morning. I was reading the grocery specials in the paper when I found a particularly good deal—the bonus chicken packs: chicken quarters packed in family sizes. But if I drove over to the store for just one item, wouldn't the gas cost cut into the savings?
Five minutes later, I was headed to the store on my bike: helmet on my head, and old backpack on my back. As I rode the two miles to the store, I noticed the temperature seemed to have gone up a little. When I entered the store, I headed straight to the chicken counter. I picked a package weighing slightly over ten pounds, and then headed for the checkout.
After getting outside, reality set in when the air hit my face. It was really hot. I realized I didn't have the car, so the chicken would be riding on my back. I put it into my backpack and thought to myself, “It's only two miles. If I concentrate, I will be home in no time.” Actually the partially frozen chicken felt cold against my back but the rest of me was beginning to sweat.
As I approached a signal light, it turned yellow so I stopped. Suddenly, I heard a woman screaming. The light turned green but the cars didn't move. Maybe there had been an accident? I looked behind me even though I never heard any cars crash.
What I saw was a small crowd of people coming up the road towards me. I heard someone yell, “I'm a nurse.” I looked around again and still, no accident. Moving faster, this crowd of folks started talking loudly in my direction. “Are you alright? We're here to help.” “Who are they talking to?” I wondered. “Can we help you?” they all asked. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw traffic piling up. I was confused! “No!” I told the crowd. “I'm fine!”
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150 左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
It was their turn to look confused.

I pointed to the backpack as I started to laugh.

    One possible version:
A Visit to a Village Hope School
Last Sunday, a team of 14 volunteers, which consisted of teachers and students, was sent by our school to visit the Hope School in Hexi Village.
The volunteers first played games with the kids of the Hope School, through which they quickly became familiar. Besides, the volunteers donated various books to the school, hoping the kids could benefit from reading. While communicating with the volunteers, the kids shared their dreams of the future.
Both the volunteers and the kids in the Hope School learned much from the visit.
    第二节
    One possible version:
It was their turn to look confused. Someone spoke up, “You are bleeding all over! Why don't you get off your bike and check?” I got off my bike. Willing hands held my bike and helped me get my backpack off. “Were you in an accident? Were you wounded?” I was peppered with strange questions. Then I looked down at my backpack, sitting now on the white concrete line of road. There was a red ring around it! I realized my arms and legs also had blood on them.
I pointed to the backpack as I started to laugh. “It's my chicken,” I told the frightened group of people. They opened my backpack not knowing what to expect. And they found ten pounds of chicken parts, the ice of which had seriously melted. The mixture of water and blood ran through my backpack and all over me. I looked like an accident victim. Suddenly, everyone was laughing out of relief. All of a sudden I realized how hot it was! All this for cheap chicken!
    听力文本
    Text 1
W: Why are you so late? Too much traffic again?
M: Actually, the traffic was held up by a taxi which was on fire, so I got off the bus and took the subway.
    Text 2
W: Look at the new bag I bought you. It's only $ 68.
M: It's a real bargain. But I already have one that's similar in color and design.
    Text 3
M: Excuse me, do you mind my opening the window? It feels hot here.
W: Can you wait for a minute? I' m leaving in fifteen minutes.
    Text4
M: I'm going to the market. Do you need something from it?
W: Can you buy me a bag of dog food? The market does have dog food, but the brand I want is only sold in the pet store next to the pet clinic.
M: No problem, just send me its location.
    Text 5
M: It's such a pity that Jenny has failed in the exam.
W: Indeed, she had worked pretty hard. But just on the morning of the test day, she accompanied her roommate home, whose father fell ill suddenly.
M: So she gave up the first part of the test?
W: No, but she was late for it.
    Text 6
M: Can I invite my friends over to have a party?
W: Of course, Louis. When do you plan to hold it?
M: Is Saturday afternoon OK? We have no classes at that time.
W: But don't you remember that your dad said we would be visiting Grandma at that time? Can you have it the following day?
M: Some of them have Sunday classes. I think I'd better put it off until a week later.
    Text 7
W: OK, you have Room 305, and here's your room card.
M: Thanks. By the way, what kinds of restaurants are there near the hotel?
W: There are three restaurants around here: a Chinese restaurant, a Japanese restaurant and a Western one.
    M: Where are they?
W: Well, the Chinese restaurant is just opposite us. The Japanese one and the Western one are a little farther. They are in the Future Mall on the street corner. Walk along the street to the east. It takes at most ten minutes to walk there.
M: I appreciate your introduction. I think I'll try the nearest one first tonight.
    Text 8
    M: It's 3:30 now. I don't want to be late.
W: Honey, don't go too fast. I must look at the map.
M: I think it's better to follow the GPS on the smartphone. It's more accurate.
W: OK. We need to leave the freeway at the next exit.
M: Where does that lead to?
W: Toward Seattle. After that we'll pass Tacoma and later see a sign saying Olympia. That's exactly where we are heading, Maria's house.
M: It sounds really far. Can we make it there before dusk?
W: Don't worry. The GPS says we'll get there at around 5 o'clock.
    Text 9
W: I'm considering applying to an international company for a job. Can you give me some suggestions on the English interview?
M: Well, first impression is of vital importance. You really need to have a good start. Before introducing yourself, greet the interviewers with a smile. Keep eye contact with them, especially when you are listening. Both are good ways to make a good first impression.
W: Body language is really important, isn't it?
M: Yes, it is. The second thing is to have confidence. You get confidence from being prepared. You should do some research about the company before the interview.
W: OK, I'll try. I never thought about that before. But, Frank, what if I can't remember an English word when answering a question?
M: In that case, instead of trying to think out that word, you can explain what you want to express. For example, if you forget the word “manufacturing”, you can say “making a product”.
W: Thanks, Frank. These are practical and easy to follow. You are very helpful.
    M: You're welcome. Good luck.
    Text 10
M: Welcome to Live a Beautiful Life. Today I'll share with you how to make life beautiful by gardening. Sunflowers are native American plants with many uses. Their oil is used for cooking oil, and their seeds can make tasty snacks. A sunflower also makes a bright and happy addition to any sunny window or balcony. Growing a sunflower in a pot is an easy project that even small children can enjoy.
You can buy sunflower seeds from your local nursery or garden center, or you can order them online. If you want rare varieties, you may have better luck online.
Choose the size of your container based on the height of the flower you want to plant, as well as how many flowers you want in each container. Push each seed about I inch deep into the soil. If you're planting more than one seed in your container, put the seeds 4 to 5 inches apart.
Sunflowers need more water than most plants as they are growing. Sunflowers that don't get enough water during those early stages will have thin, weak stems that are unable to hold the heavy flower head upright.
So much for today. We'll be back on air tomorrow morning at 7.
