Alexander Tsao, a keen rock climber for several years, was climbing the walls at a gym near his home in Redmond, Washington, when he noticed that the ropes were frequently being replaced with new ones. Just 16 at the time, Tsao wondered what happened to the old ropes. He asked the gym owners and found out the ropes had to be discarded regularly due to safety regulations. He was surprised to find that so many ropes were sent to landfills.

This discovery inspired him to find a solution to the environmental issue of climbing rope waste. He considered possible ideas and ways to up cycle the discarded ropes, deciding to turn them into leashes (拴狗带) for dogs.

Once he had made his plan, Tsao contacted all the climbing gyms in Washington State, introducing his idea of recycling old ropes. Some were doubtful at first, but many gyms agreed to donate their used ropes. Tsao spent months testing and designing his products and filling documents to become a nonprofit organization which he called Rocks2Dogs.

To make the leashes, Tsao and volunteers first wash and dry the ropes. They cut them into different lengths, ranging from4 to 10 feet, and then burn the ends to prevent them from fraying (磨损). They add a clip and handle to each end, and cover the leash’s hardware with shrink tape.

Because making the leashes now is a full-time job, Tsao has asked his friends, family and neighbors for help. “We have made and sold over a thousand leashes, which add up to over 10,000 feet of rope being saved from landfills,” says Tsao. The leashes come in various colors. There are also half-price leashes made from ropes with slight imperfections. These start at $7.49 while most other leashes start at $ 14.99. To date, the nonprofit has raised more than $ 35,000. Much of this money has been donated to animal shelters.

    24What did Tsao discover?

ARock climbing might do harm to health.

BThe gym didn’t obey safety regulations.

CMany old climbing ropes went to waste.

DLandfills caused damage to the environment.

    25What was Tsao’s plan?

ATo call on climbing gyms to donate ropes.

BTo transform retired ropes into dog leashes.

CTo upcycle old leashes saved from landfills.

DTo set up an environmental organization.

26What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

    AEfforts to promote the ropes.

    BReasons for starting Rocks2Dogs.

    CWays to reuse discarded waste.

    DSteps for making the leashes.

27What is the last paragraph intended to tell us?

ATsao succeeds in the leash business.

    BAnimal protection gain’s more attention.

CMore people volunteered to help Tsao.

DLeashes are very popular with pet owners.

    C

When you re grocery shopping, have you ever noticed that most grocery stores often don’t have windows and if they do they’re only at the front of the store? You might not pay much attention to the architectural features of the building you re grocery shopping in—you’re there to shop for food, not admire the layout! But that’s not just it!

“Grocery stores want to create a separate environment within the stores, where the outside world doesn’t exist,” explains Andrei Vasilescu, a shopping expert who has studied shopping behaviors and psychology. “You don’t get bothered by the rain, sunshine, or the fact that your kids are waiting in the parking lot. All your focus is on the shopping experience.” This technique also prevents shoppers from noticing that it’s getting dark out.

“Walls instead of windows can keep daylight out of grocery stores and help preserve the products, as some products can go bad faster in direct sunlight. Too much sun exposure can even cause packaging labels to fade. Furthermore, having windows in their stores would decrease the space available to showcase products,” says Margine Biswas, an architect with expertise in retail (零售) design. “Compared to windows, exterior (外部的) walls have stronger structural supports and can hold the heavier items on the shelves of those walls.”

Are some grocery stores going against this trend? In Germany, a study was conducted to test out stores with more natural light. A few stores had some bread products going bad rapidly due to the sunlight. They needed to replace the glass with specially designed panes (窗格) that help reduce the heat and radiation. This technique hasn’t caught on widely yet. A National Rewable Energy laboratory study in 2002 assessed the effects of natural light on shoppers—and it found that shoppers felt vastly more comfortable when there was more natural light around. They were also better able to identify both products and other people in the stores. It’s worth noting; though, that this study assessed natural light in all retail spaces, not just grocery stores. The challenges of adding more natural light to grocery stores remain.

28How does a grocery store without windows influence its shoppers?

AIt keeps them absorbed in shopping. BIt helps to strengthen family bonds.

CIt prevents them from shopping relaxedly. DIt misleads them to buy unnecessary goods.

29“What do Margine Biswas’s words mainly suggest about grocery stores?

ARetail design is not complex. BNatural light is available.

CWindows still have their value. DWindows barely benefit them.

30What is the author’s opinion on adding more natural light to grocery stores?

AIt can be carried out widely. BShoppers will be discouraged by it.

CIt proves less challenging. DThe stores should be cautious.

31What is the text mainly about?

APotential effects of natural light on grocery stores. BReasons why most grocery stores have no windows.

CSome tricks applied by a majority of grocery stores. DHow consumers can better enjoy grocery shopping.

    D

City parks have long been a place for urban residents to get a small amount of green. As cities increasingly feel the impacts of rising seas and temperatures, people are rethinking the roles of urban parks.

All of the dark-gray asphalt (沥青) in cities collect heat. Dallas is one of the country’s fastest-warming cities thanks in part to its extensive impervious (不透水的) surfaces, but with a new $312 million bond package, the city is hoping to change that. Using satellite data, the city is able to see what neighborhoods most need the cooling effect of green spaces.

Cities are increasingly flooding and city planners think parks can help with this issue too. A report published in February by The Nature Conservancy looked at the best ways to deal with flooding in Houston, a city with many neighborhoods built on floodplains and regularly flooded by rising waters. Offering affected homeowners buyouts and transforming homes into green spaces would save more money than installing infrastructure (基础设施) like pipes, they found.

Brendan Shane, a climate program director, says parks can create opportunities for people to exercise and play, in addition to cooling neighborhoods and absorbing floodwater. “The stronger the bonds are from neighbor to neighbor, the better they are able to react to a shock,” he says.

“Not a single solution by itself will avoid the climate crisis. We see parks as an important part of it, but there isn’t a silver bullet,” says Diane Regas, CEO of The Trust for Public Land. “Parks are an example of what we in the environmental community need to do to reach solutions that address climate change at the same time and make people’s lives better.”

32What does the city Dallas want to deal with?

AThe lack of green spaces. BThe way of collecting heat.

CThe effect of rising seas. DThe bond between neighborhoods.

33What can be inferred from the report by The Nature Conservancy?

ACities in the world are frequently flooded. BCity parks may help prevent city flooding.

CCities needn’t invest much money in infrastructure. DCity parks affect people’s choice of a neighborhood.

34What does Brendan Shane say about parks?

AThey can enable people to get over a shock. BThey can reduce air pollution effectively.

CThey can perform positive social functions. DThey can help people to keep a cool head.

35What does the underlined phrase “a sliver bullet” in Paragraph 5 mean?

AA fast and effective solution. BA successful example.

CAn immediate and clear cause. DAn impractical method.

____40____ Encouraging yourself to take the first step can be difficult due to some of society’s obsolete (被淘汰的) barriers. The truth is that you must allow yourself to achieve and show your tastes leaving aside any obstacles, especially those that are self-imposed (自己强加的). It’s never too late!
