As the oldest of three children, I never had any hand-me-downs to wear like other poor kids. Instead, Mom got my wardrobe(全部衣物)from neighborhood mothers. Imagine the fun other kids had when they saw me wearing their used clothing.
Perhaps my biggest challenge came from Charlie. As far as I was concerned, Charlie's main fun was to make fun of me. During those years, I slowly learned to hate. I hated Charlie, but I also hated myself for not being able to change my situation.
But situations do change. That opportunity came after high school when I joined the Navy. The Navy made me a social equal for the first time in my life, and the GI Bill gave me a college education. Hard work and a few lucky career choices finally lifted me into the middle class.
One beautiful summer afternoon, my friend and I celebrated Friday in Jackson's Steak House. For the first time in almost twenty years, I saw Charlie. Not only did I see him, but he spoke to me. I could tell he didn't recognize me, but I surely recognized my childhood tormentor(折磨者). His words were short, but I'll never forget them. He said, “Sir, what kind of dressing would you like with your salad?”
The tables had turned. Charlie was calling me “Sir”. While hundreds of improper ideas raced through my mind, I could only give a two-word reply: “Blue cheese.” As much as I wanted to taste the sweet taste of revenge (复仇), I refused to do it. I wouldn't put another person through what I had gone through as a child. It was time to put childish things behind me and make use of the new opportunity that life had given me. I left him a good tip and I didn't say one word about recognizing him.
4.Where did the author usually get his clothes as a kid?

Many of the Earth's creatures die because of human choices. These choices have nothing to do with food or shelter or anything else that helps humans survive. What kills millions of animals all over the world is that humans want to make money by doing so.
People use parts of animals for everything from hats to handbags, from jewelry to ashtrays and to make powders that supposedly improve a person's life.Deciding that a species is endangered and protecting it by law are not always enough.People who kill wildlife illegally rarely get caught.
During the late 1980s, saving elephants became a popular cause.Wildlife protection groups made sure everyone saw pictures or films of elephants with their faces cut off for their ivory. These groups also proved that certain populations of elephants were decreasing. As a result, most people stopped buying objects made of ivory.Laws against poaching (偷猎) were made stronger. Many countries made importing ivory illegal.Killing elephants for their ivory became more risky and less profitable.
However, concern for certain species will become weak after a while. In the late 1970s, people protested against the killing of seal babies.Everyone was shocked to see young seals being killed in their icy habitat. The cruel activity stopped. But ten years later, the number of seal babies killed was higher than ever.
Other animal protection movements have come and gone, such as saving the whales and protecting dolphins. The whale population appears to have increased for now. And the laws are finally changed in America to protect the dolphins that swim with tuna in parts of the Pacific Ocean.
In the years to come, people's attention will probably turn to some other endangered species. Plenty of them urgently need attention. During this time, will the elephants be forgotten?
8.What leads to the disappearance of millions of wild animals?
    A.The growing human population.
B.Human's hope for making a fortune.
C.Human's too much need for wild food.
D.Not having enough laws on wildlife protection.
9.What can you infer from the text about what happened in the late 1980s?
A.Wildlife protection groups did make great efforts.
B.Importing ivory in all countries was illegal.
C.Those who killed elephants all got caught.
    D.Hunting was completely not allowed.
10.Why are seal babies mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A.To show the effort to protect seal babies.
B.To show an increasing number of seal babies.
C.To show the decrease of worries about certain species.
D.To show people's protest against the killing of seal babies.
11.What does the author mean by using the underlined sentence?
A.Humans should choose some rare animals to protect.
B.Attention must be paid to saving some endangeredwildlife.
C.Success has been achieved in quite a few cases of wildlife protection.
D.Concern and movements for animal protection should be always kept.
    D
The snowy owl (雪鸮) is a white-colored owl with many unique characteristics. This bird bears a pure white appearance (only the male), with a rounded head, and a black bill. While the male is actually a pure white individual, the female and young ones have a darker appearance with dusky spots. The female owl never attains complete whiteness in her lifetime. As young owls get older, they get whiter, losing their heavy stripes (条纹) and dark spots. This bird is between 18 to 20 inches long. Its wingspan(翼展)is 49 to 59 inches. It weighs between 3.5 to 6.5 pounds.
The snowy owl lives in the regions of Greenland, Iceland, Canada, and the northern parts of the USA. Carolus Linnaeus was the first person to classify this bird. Apart from being the heaviest owl in North America, it is also the official bird of Quebec. It is known by other names such as “the Arctic Owl” or “the Great White Owl”. The reason for this bird's adaptation to the cold temperatures of the Arctic Circle is its splendidly beautiful, white, and thick feathers. These feathers help it to survive the extreme cold and develop the perfect camouflage (保护色) in the “white” of its Arctic habitat.
The snowy owl is a very patient hunter, and it can sit in one place for hours. Gifted with great hearing and keen eyesight, it is known to be an efficient and clever hunter. It is not difficult for it to track down its prey, which might be barely visible under thick plants or snow cover. Before soaring, the bird waits patiently and identifies its potential prey. Once the prey comes within the proper range, it lays its attack with its sharp-hooked claws. It hunts both during the day and at night.
12.What can we conclude about the snowy owl from the first paragraph?
A.It is a bird with pure white feathers.
B.It is a bird which is big and heavy.
C.It has a white appearance with black spots.
D.The female owl is whiter than the male one.
13.Why can the snowy owl adapt to the cold climate of the Arctic Circle?
    A.Thanks to its living areas.
    B.Owing to its strong wings.
C.As a result of its clever mind.
    D.Because of its special feathers.
14.What does the underlined expression “track down” mean?
    A.Kill B.Find.
    C.Attract. D.Recognize.
15.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.The brief introduction of the snowy owl.
B.The snowy owl is the heaviest bird in the world.
C.The snowy owl is first classified by Carolus Linnaeus.
D.The difference between the Arctic owl and the snowy owl.

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp.” And then she walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but the forest and, far beyond, a snow-capped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
    “Tom!” she cried. “Help!”
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hoped it would lead her to the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard the sound of a helicopter. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them down if they came back again.
    Paragraph 1:

根据文中Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park下的PopUp picnics in the park return for the fourth summer in a row, taking place on Thursdays.
根据文中The Crow's Nest下的After the sun sets, the fun begins with dancing to the best live music of local bands.
Tickets can be gotten online.
跳舞 4.be designed to被设计用作
    B
As the oldest of three children,...Mom got my wardrobe(全部衣物)from neighborhood mothers.(作为三个孩子中最大的一个,我从来没有任何像其他穷孩子一样的旧衣服穿。
Imagine the fun other kids had when they saw me wearing their used clothing.(想象一下其他孩子看到我穿着他们的旧衣服时有多开心。) During those years, I slowly learned to hate...for not being able to change my situation.(在那些年里,我慢慢地学会了恨。
He said, “Sir, what kind of dressing would you like with your salad?”(他说:“先生,您的沙拉要用什么调料?”)
I hated Charlie, but I also hated myself for not being able to change my situation. As much as I wanted to taste the sweet taste of revenge(复仇), I refused to do it...I left him a good tip and I didn't say one word about recognizing him.
别人穿过的旧衣服 2.make fun of 嘲弄,取笑 3.situation n.
What kills millions of animals all over the world is that humans want to make money by doing so.
However, concern for certain species will become weak after a while.
Other animal protection movements have come and gone和最后一段第一句In the years to come, people's attention will probably turn to some other endangered species.
1.have nothing to do with与……无关 2.risky adj.冒险的 3.protest v.抗议 4.rarely很少,罕有地 5.the number of...……
What kills millions of animals all over the world is that humans want to make money by doing so.
What kills millions of animals all over the world为What引导的主语从句,that humans want to make money by doing so为that引导的表语从句。

This bird is between 18 to 20 inches long. Its wingspan(翼展) is 49 to 59 inches. It weighs between 3.5 to 6.5 pounds.(这种鸟有18到20英寸长。 Apart from being the heaviest owl in North America, it is also the official bird of Quebec.(除了是北美最重的鸮之外,它还是魁北克省的官方鸟类。)
The reason for this bird's adaptation to the cold temperatures of the Arctic Circle is its splendidly beautiful, white, and thick feathers. These feathers...in the “white” of its Arctic habitat.(这种鸟能适应北极圈的寒冷温度的原因是它美丽的、雪白的、厚实的羽毛。
The snowy owl is a very patient hunter...it is known to be an efficient and clever hunter.(雪鸮是非常有耐心的猎手,它可以在一个地方停落几个小时。 及画线短语后its prey, which might be barely visible under thick plants or snow cover(猎物在厚厚的植物或积雪下可能几乎看不见)可推知,对于高效聪明的猎手雪鸮来说,找到隐藏在厚厚的植物或积雪下的猎物并不困难。
根据第一段中The snowy owl (雪鸮) is a white-colored owl with many unique characteristics.(雪鸮是一种白色的猫头鹰,有许多独有的特征。)

But when the water came and washed away his castle可知,用沙子建造的城堡会被水冲走(washed away)。take apart拆开;clear up解决;dig out挖出。
根据空后to do as he liked and let him see what would happen可知,作者想让儿子明白(understand)。
根据空后的when the first wave destroyed可知,儿子的作品被海浪毁掉可能会让他沮丧(upset)。
My three-year-old son Nathan was digging the sand to build a castle.
Nathan was digging the sand to build a castle可知,此处是信息词castle的词汇复现。
根据下文were washed away by a giant wave called Family Life可知,作者想起家庭生活(life)。
Nothing I did lasted beyond the moment.
I mopped floors only to see someone可知,此处指把拖过的地板弄脏(dirty)。
根据上文washed away by a giant wave called Family Life. Nothing I did lasted beyond the moment.和下文I wondered if...
My three-year-old son Nathan was digging the sand to build a castle.
根据that will last forever可知,作者意识到自己做的事情是重要的(important)。
    5.consume v.
    7.matter v.
Although I warned him it'd be washed away, he insisted on building it in the path of every single wave that would crash on the shore.
Although引导让步状语从句;it'd be washed away为宾语从句,作动词warned的宾语;that引导定语从句,修饰先行词wave。

4.can't wait to do sth.

    One possible version:
    Dear Peter,
How is everything going? I am very glad to learn that you are coming to China this winter holiday. Now let me tell you something about how to learn Chinese well.
Learning Chinese is just like learning any other foreign language, so you should not be shy and speak Chinese whenever you can, which are very important. The more you use Chinese, the better you will learn it. You'd better speak slowly, listen to the tape and repeat the phrases. If others can't understand you, you can use pictures or body language to help you. I hope these tips can help you.
    Best wishes!
    Yours,
    Li Hua

    Time
    one weekend in July
    Place
    in the forest
    Character
    Jane, Tom
    Reason
Jane had a quarrel with her husband, Tom, so she walked away.
    Conflict
Jane was lost in the forest.
Paragraph 1:But no more helicopters came and it was dark.
But no more helicopters came and it was dark.(但是再没有直升机来了,而且天黑了。)
It was daybreak when Jane woke up.(Jane醒来时天已破晓。)
Paragraph 2:It was daybreak when Jane woke up.
It was daybreak when Jane woke up.(Jane醒来时天已破晓。)
    One possible version:
    Paragraph 1:
But no more helicopters came and it was dark. Immediately, absolute darkness ruled the forest. Jane, exhausted and scared, lay down near a stone, missing her family at a distance. All the fantastic memories crowded in and she couldn't help crying, “Hadn't I quarreled with Tom, walked away and climbed to the high place, I wouldn't be trapped in this awful place and confronted with the danger of dying.” She regretted her behaviour with endless anxieties, and then became asleep with tears in her eyes.
    Paragraph 2:
It was daybreak when Jane woke up. Weak as she was, she struggled to her feet, continuing searching for assistance. To her great joy, a helicopter was flying overhead again. Eager and excited, she waved her yellow blouse and spared no effort to yell so as to attract its attention. Fortunately, she was eventually noticed and brought into the helicopter. There she saw her husband, a man staring at her, wearing an expression of relief. As tightly as possible, she hugged him and was too thrilled to say anything. Besides, they agreed never to quarrel again, determining to live the life to the fullest.
