But if we consider the situation of the young people aged from eight to eighteen, we should think again. What we often see today is that young people juggle a larger number of electronic devices(电子产品)when they study. While working, they also surf on the Internet, send out emails, answer the telephone and listen to music on their iPods. In a word, they are spending a large amount of time in fruitless efforts(努力)as they multitask. Multitasking is even changing the relationship between family members. As young people give so much attention to their own worlds, they seem to have no time to spend with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house, nor can they eat at the family table. Multitasking also has an influence on young people’s performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their opinions of the influence of modern gadgets(器具)on their performance of tasks, many young people gave a positive reply. However, the reply from the worlds of education and business was not so positive. Educators feel that multitasking by children has a serious influence on later development of study skills. They believe that many college students now need help to improve their study skills. Similarly, employers feel that young people entering the job market need to be taught all over again, as modern gadgets have made it unnecessary for them to learn special skills to do their work. 34. What does the underlined word “ juggle ” most probably mean? A. 想买 B. 同时使用 C. 代替 D. 从……查找信息 35. In Paragraph 3, the author mentions that __________ . A. family members do not greet each other B. family members do not eat at the family table C. young people get on well with their families D. young people hardly communicate with their family members 36. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph? A. Young people must learn skills for future jobs. B. Young people learn a lot of useful skills from modern gadgets. C. Multitasking is an important skill to young people. D. Multitasking has an influence on young people’s study and work. 37. Which of the following is TRUE? A. Many young people think multitasking is good for their study and work. B. Employers think it unnecessary for young people to be taught all over again. C. Educators feel that young people don’t need to improve their study skills. D. People from the world of education believe multitasking has a good influence on children’s later study skills. C How many hours do you spend sitting in a chair every day? Eight hours in the office and three hours in front of the TV after work is the answer for many people. You probably don’t need others to tell you that sitting too much is not good for your health. What’s worse, a recent research suggests that we cannot get rid of (消除) the negative effects of sitting too much with a good diet and exercise, according to all article in The New York Times. The article reported that a 2010 study of nearly 9, 000 Australians found that for each extra hour of television a person watched a day, the risk of dying rose by 11%. Another study tracked (追踪) the health of 123,000 Americans between l992 and 2006. The death rate (死亡率) for men who spent six hours or more a day sitting was about 20% higher than those who sat for three hours or less. The death rate for women who sat for more than six hours a day was about 40%higher. In other words, sitting is killing us. So what can we do about it? Health experts suggest we spend more time standing. The BBC and the University of Chester in the UK did a simple experiment with a small group of l0 volunteers who usually spent most of the day sitting. They were asked to stand for at least three hours a day. The researchers took measurements(测量)on days when the volunteers stood, and when they sat around. They found the volunteers’ blood glucose level (血糖水平)went down much more quickly after a meal on the days when the volunteers stood compared with the days they spent in a chair. Standing also burned more calories—about 50 calories an hour. The researchers believe that even small changes in our daily life, like standing while talking on the phone, going over to talk to a colleague rather than sending an e-mail, or simply taking the stairs instead of the elevator will help. 38. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator. 41. What is the best title for this article? A. Sitting-down Habit Is Killing Us. B. Standing Bums Calories. C. Sit for 6 Hours or More. D. Most traditional toys, like building blocks, were first made of wood. Today, wooden building blocks are still used, but now there are several other types of building blocks to choose from, like plastic building blocks. Children build all kinds of things that they see in everyday life with building blocks. This gives them the chance to learn new things and life skills. Building blocks can help children to practice their language skills. Most children talk to each other as they build things with these traditional toys. This type of toy also helps develop the skills that children need in life. As they begin to join groups playing with building blocks, they learn to take turns, to share, and to solve problems with others. However, these are not the only advantages of playing with building blocks. The building blocks also help develop children’s skills in math and science. They allow children to work according to the steps of scientific discovery, which are first to watch and think, and then to test. Traditional toy building blocks also come in different shapes, colors and sizes. These types of building blocks encourage children to develop skills in dividing things. Playing with building blocks is not only fun but also very helpful. Maybe that is the reason why building blocks are still favorite today. 54.
