After filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I look what I could get—a teaching job at what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was dive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteenteaching English.

School started, I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade classseventeen boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love for the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.

In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as the textbook had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. It sounds reasonable, but the text evidently ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my task master known to be the strictest most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.

My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn’t happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the room, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes he left, silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes. I felt mildly victorious that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period I had to face him.

    第二节:读后续写(满分25分)

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“Mamma,” said Susie Dean, one summer's morning, “may I go to the woods, and pick berries?”

“Yes,” replied Mrs Dean, “but you must take Rover with you.”

Susie brought her little basket and her mother put up a nice lunch for her. She tied down the cover, and fastened a tin cup to it

The little girl called Rover-a great Newfoundland dog and gave him a tin pail to carry. “If I bring it home full, mamma,” she said. “Won’t you make some berry cakes for tea?”

Away she tripped, singing as she went down the lane and across the pasture. When she got to the woods, she put her dinner basket down beside a tree, and began to pick berries.

Rover ran about, chasing a squirrel or a rabbit now and thenbut never straying (偏离)far from Susie.

The tin pail (锡桶)was not a very small one. By the time it was two thirds full, Susie began to feel hungry, and thought she would eat her lunch.

Rover came and took his place at her side as soon as she began to cat. Did she not give him some of the lunch? No, she was in a selfish mood did no such thing.

“There ’ Rover, run away! there's a good dog.” she said; but Rover staid near her, watching her steadily with his clear brown eyes.

The meat he wanted so much, was soon eaten up; and all he got of the nice dinner, was a small crust (面包皮) of gingerbread that Susie threw away.

After dinner, Susie played a while by the by the brook. She threw sticks into the water, and Rover swam in and brought them back. Then she began to pick berries again.

She did not enjoy the afternoon as she did the morning. The sunshine was as bright, the berries were as sweet and plentiful, and she was neither tired nor hungry.

But good, faithful Rover was hungry, and she had not given him even one piece of meat She tried to forget how selfish she had been; but she could not do so, and quite early she started for home.

    第二节:读后续写(满分25分)

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Jason looked out the window of the school bus. Normally, he liked to count the number of dogs he saw on the way to school. They always looked so happy on their morning walks. But today was different. Jason had a test.

Jason had never taken a test before. He had heard about them, but tests were for big kids. Though now that he was in second grade, his teacher announced that the whole class would take a spelling test. She stood in front of the whole class and told everyone at once in a loud, clear voice. She explained that to do well on the test, the students would have to memorize their spelling words and rewrite them without any mistakes.

This made Jason feel very nervous. What would happen if he made a mistake? He was pretty good at spelling, but sometimes words sounded different than they looked. He practiced all of the words five times each last night. He hoped it was enough.

When Jason got to school, he didn't feel well. His stomach hurt. Jason went straight to the nurse's office, but the nurse told Jason that he wasn't sick. "Sometimes when you're nervous or scared, it can make your stomach hurt," the nurse said. "Try taking some deep breaths to relax. And good luck on your test!" And with that, the school nurse sent Jason to class.

"Oh, good!" Jason's teacher said when he walked in the door. "I'm glad you're here. We were just about to start the test." She handed Jason a piece of paper. It was numbered one to ten, but had no other writing on it.

Jason put his name at the top like he always did. Then the teacher said "Number one: friend." The students were supposed to spell the word "friend" in the first blank space. Jason did his best.

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Several years ago I worked in an international company selling computer devices. At the time I had to travel around the country as a part of my work.I remember clearly that I was at a stage of my life where I only cared about how to earn more money.

Once,I went to the airport to take a bus to downtown as usual. The routine was as follows:get into the city, take the bus to the hotel, visit the customer, work late, take the bus back to the airport and fly back...Somehow,that day I decided to take the stairs down to a different exit, where I found a beautiful garden I had never seen before.I waited there and enjoyed the scenery until the bus came.

I was used to the seat behind the driver. However, that day I sat on a seat in the middle and a boy was seated next to me and he was carrying a great many suitcases. He turned to me suddenly and gave me one of the most sincere smiles I had ever seen from a stranger. He said warmly,"hi,the perfect day in the perfect place, isn't it?"

I remember saying to myself-this must be one of those typical people who is young and just thinks everything in the world is beautiful and easy. Why was he annoying me when I just wanted to enjoy the bus ride? But out of politeness,I answered,"Really perfect!Did your dear parents pay for you to have some vacations on the beach?""No,I don't have parents and I'm not here for vacation."He shook his head instantly,"I'm here to achieve my biggest dream.Actually,I'm on the way to the army school where my grandfather studied a long time ago."

    第二节读后续写(满分25分)

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!

After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester worked.

Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.

Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log (原木)from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.

The snow had stopped, but some time later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed (倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.

    参考答案

    浙江省义乌中学2021-2022学年高二上学期期中考试英语试题

    【答案】Para 1:

After class, I walked to his office, took a deep breath, and opened the door. My boss was sitting in his chair with a hardened face, gazing at me long and hard. Anxious and ashamed, I said nothing, wondering if he would fire me right away. He handed me an envelope, which definitely added more anxiety to me at that moment. However, my eyes went wide open when I opened it and read the letter. It was not an unemployment letter but a letter with several suggestions about my teaching, one of which was highlighted in red: An educator should respect students, feelings. Almost immediately, a warm glow of emotion rose inside me. As I went out of the office, I made up my mind to change my attitude.

    Para 2:

Inspired by his advice, I walked towards the classroom, determined to make a change. As the bell rang, I stood on the platform, eyes wandering across the classroom. The students seemed to expecting another boring and dull English lesson, some dropping their eyes and some whispering in the back rows. I cleared my throat and announced, “Boys and girls, let’s begin with your voice about my literature lesson.” Suddenly, a complete silence fell over. Each lifted his heads and cast me a puzzled look. Flashing a smile, I encouraged, “Anything you’d like to say!” At this, the students got stirred up. The class soon amazingly came to life thanks to their brilliant voices, which brought me to what my strictest boss enlightened me: respecting the students instead of ignoring them will make a difference.

When she was nearly out of the woods, a rustling in the underbrush attracted her attention. "I cannot wait to figure out whether a bird or other animals?" she said to herself. "If I can catch it, how glad I shall be!" she attempted to make her way quietly through the underbrush; much to her funk, she saw a large snake coiling up before her. She was so much frightened that she could not move; but brave Rover saw the snake, springing forward and chasing after it, seized it by the neck and killed it.

When the faithful dog came and rubbed his head against her hand, Susie put her arms around his neck, and burst into tears. "O Rover," she cried, "you dear, good dog! Please forgive my selfishness!" Rover understood the tone of her voice, if he did not understand her words, and capered about in great glee, barking all the time. You may be sure that he enjoyed a delicious dinner that evening. Susie never forget the lesson of that day. She soon learned to be on her guard against a selfish spirit, and became a happier and more lovable little girl.

He hoped that he didn't mix up the “i” and the “e” in the word “friend”. Having carefully checked the word, he was fully convinced that there would be no mistake. A little bit delighted as he felt, a sense of nervousness swiftly seized him. He was anxious about the spellings of the remaining words. What if he failed in the following parts? Would his classmates pour scornful looks onto him? His stomach hurt again. All of a sudden, he remembered the advice of the nurse. Taking a few deep breaths, Jason managed to calm himself and began to listen to his teacher attentively. Miraculously, all the spellings streamed into his mind one after another.

Before long, it was over. Jason’s stomach didn’t hurt any more either. After handing in the paper, he couldn’t wait to open his book and surprisingly, he found all his spellings correct. Several minutes later, his teacher announced the result of the test. No doubt he ranked No. 1. On hearing it, he jumped with joy, waves of pride running through his body. His hard practice paid off. On the bus home, he saw those lovely dogs again. As usual, he began to count them happily.

He told me that for 8 years,he had only one thing in his mind to join the army school like his grandfather."My grandpa was a great general of the army and he left me this,"he said proudly, showing me a golden knife."I have been following my dream these years and I'm happy every day." When the bus reached his stop,he rose from his seat and took all his suitcases, saying goodbye with a big smile. From then on,I always try to do everything with my best smile on my face.

    第二节

Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our difficult situation. Our campsite was in the deep of the forest, really far away from the highway. We were in the middle of nowhere, wearing only underwear, with our supplies burnt into ashes, including our tent and cellphones. Even Steve was unsure what to do next. The only thing we could do was just sitting in the cold wind, tired and frightened, wondering how to get out of the forest.

Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. Anxiously we listened and stared into the darkness. A jeep appeared. A forester had spotted the light from the fire and had come to have a check. We jumped into the warm vehicle and the forester drove us to the ranger station, where we were given clothes and were able to call our parents. Steve and I had many more camping adventures from then on, but it was on this trip that Steve began to treat me more like a friend and equal, rather than a younger cousin. Our friendship continues to this day.
