My husband jkes with me that my midlife crisis was having my nw 11-year-ld daughter in my 40s.
I started my career as Assciate Editr at Wman’s Wrld magazine in the late 1990s. Then I was a magazine editr-in-chief fr five natinal cnsumer publicatins and als cntributed t magazines like Lngevity and New Wman.
Fur years after getting married in 2005, I eventually gave birth t my daughter, Crystal. As I wrte n Parenting.cm: “As the dctr checked her vital rgans and my husband cunted her 10 perfect fingers and tes, I realized that my bdy had prduced a wnder.”

When Crystal was 3 years ld, I wrte an essay abut watching her dance at a tddler(学步的小孩) reading grup at the library, instead f sitting dwn with the ther children. I expected her perfrmance t anny peple, but her jyful dancing attracted them and made me cnsider my wn pssibilities.
“Had I ever been that way, I wndered. If s, culd I be like that again? Culd I becme as free as a child with her whle life ahead f her, ready and willing t be the star f her wn prductin?”
As my daughter transfrmed frm a tddler int a yung girl, she cntinued t be my inspiratin. I wrte abut the new rules fr babysitting and shared research shwing that fathers wh participated in husewrk had a psitive impact n their daughter’s future success n The Washingtn Pst.
I fcused n prviding Crystal with resilience-building(韧性) when she neared her teens. I wrte abut pwerful phrases fr The Week, like “n ne is the judge f yur self-wrth”.
As my daughter cntinues t grw during this messy time, there is ne certainty: I will cntinue t tell my stries, thrugh the eyes f my midlife wisdm. I can’t wait t see her next chapter----and fr yu t read mine.

Starman, the dummy(仿真人) riding a cherry-red Tesla Radster(特斯拉敞篷车) thrugh space, has made his clsest apprach ever t Mars. The electric radster and its passenger were attached t the tp f a Falcn Heavy rcket during the SpaceX rcket’s first test launch n 6 February 2018.
Tw years later, the Falcn Heavy rcket and the vehicle at its tip are making their secnd trip arund the Sun. Mr. McDwell, a Harvard astrphysicist, fund that Starman passed 7.4 millin kilmeters frm Mars at 06:25 GMT 7 Octber, 2020.
The clsest recent apprach between the Earth and Mars was 56 millin kilmeters in 2003, thugh the planets are ften hundreds f millins f miles apart depending n where they are in their rbits. N ne can see the Falcn Heavy rcket at its current distance, but rbits ver perids f a few years are fairly straightfrward t predict, and Mr. McDwell used data abut hw the rcket was mving when it left the Earth’s gravity behind t lcate its recent mvements exactly.
Last time Starman circled the Sun, McDwell said, it crssed Mars’ rbit while the Red Planet was quite far away. But this time the crssing lined up with a fairly clse apprach, thugh still nt clse enugh t feel a strng tug frm Mars.
At this pint in time, if yu were able t g lk at the Radster, it wuld prbably lk pretty different. The strng slar radiatin envirnment between the planets wuld prbably have destryed all the expsed rganic materials.
Withut the Earth’s atmspheric and magnetic(磁场的) prtectin, even the plastics and carbn-fibre materials wuld start t break up. Over the curse f decades r centuries, the car will end up with its aluminium(铝) frame and hard glass parts----that’s assuming that nne f them get destryed in impacts with passing space rcks.
28, What can we infer frm the first tw paragraphs?
    A. Starman is nw circling arund the Earth in its rbit.
    B. Starman has set ut n its secnd trip arund the Sun.
    C. Starman has traveled 7.4 millin kilmeters after launch.
    D. Starman still has a lng way t g befre getting t Mars.
    29. Hw did McDwell manage t lcate Starman?
    A. By keeping Starman under visual bservatin.
    B. By predicting its future rbit arund the earth.
    C. By seeking prfessinal help frm SpaceX.
    D. By analyzing data abut the rcket’s mvement.
    30. The underlined wrd “tug” in Paragraph 4 is clsest in meaning t __________.
    A. pull B. drive C. resistance D. pressure
    31. What will happen t Starman in decades r centuries?
    A. It is circling arund Mars and will finally crash nt it.
    B. It will finish its missin and return t SpaceX n earth.
    C. Starman is likely reduced t at mst its frame and glass.
    D. SpaceX will try t recver it during its next space missin.
    D
Scial media is taking ver ur lives: Facebk, Instagram, Twitter and nw, TikTk. These scial media platfrms have transfrmed frm a way t stay cnnected t an industry where even kids can make mney ff their psts. While this may seem like anther pprtunistic innvatin, it’s really full f hidden false realities.
The median incme(中位收入) recrded in the United States f America was abut $63,000 in 2018. TikTkers can make anywhere frm $50,000 t $150,000 fr a TikTk brand partnership, and TikTkers with ver a millin fllwers can make up t $30,000 a mnth---$360,000 a year. They are making mre than the average persn trying t feed their family and keep a rf ver their heads, simply by psting a 15-secnd vide.
This is mad in mre ways than ne. Nt nly is it an verpaid “jb”, it prmtes undeserved admiratin frm viewers and a false sense f reality. Many f these famus TikTkers are still teens, and the effects f fame at such an early stage in life might cause issues later in life, such as mental illness. Teens between the ages f 13 and 17 make up 27% f TikTk viewers, wh can be easily influenced by what they are watching. They can put a false sense f self-value int wh they lk up t and what they represent: mney, fame, being cnsidered cnventinally attractive.
While TikTk has becme a great tl fr marketing, it’s imprtant t understand hw this cntent affects yung viewers. If we’re cnstantly cnsuming cntent that hsws us all we need t d t be successful is be cnventinally attractive and pst a 15-secnd vide featuring a new dance, it will challenge ur knwledge f what really makes smene successful and will in turn affect ur individual wrk ethics(伦理). What abut the peple wh miss birthdays and family hlidays due t their jbs and aren’t getting paid nearly as much as these TikTkers?
Richard Clyer, president and creatr f Metaphr, Inc., had his wn view n this issue.
“It sunds great that kids can make mney fr ding the latest dance mves in a 15-secnd vide, but we shuld feed the minds f kids and nt just their bank accunts. TikTk can be great if used prperly. Mney alne is nt gd, technlgy alne is nt gd and cnnectedness can be bad if it’s nly nline.”
Again, as a fellw cnsumer f TikTk, I d enjy the app when I have sme time t kill and need a gd laugh. I’m nt against smene making a living n entertainment, but what des getting famus f a 15-secnd vide teach yung peple?
    32. What des the underlined wrd “this” in Paragraph 1 refer t?
    A. Scial netwrking. B. Making mney n scial media.
    C. A jb ffered by TikTk. D. Staying cnnected t the Internet.
    33. Which is the pssible influence f TikTk n its yung users?
    A. They tend t live an adult life t sn.
    B. They are frced t pay fr certain services.
    C. They may abandn ther scial media.
    D. They are likely t develp false values.
    34. What can we infer frm Richard Clyer’s cmments?
    A. TikTk can be a psitive influence if teens emply it wisely.
    B. Yung TikTkers shuld be banned frm making mney.
    C. It is better t invlve educatin n investment in TikTk vides.
    D. Cntents f vides need checking befre their release nline.
    35. Which f the fllwing might be the best title f the passage?
    A. Say N t TikTk. B. Jin Yung TikTkers
    C. TikTk---A Mine f Mney D. A Jb vs An Entertainment

If yu think yu’re a pessimist and there’s n hpe f ever turning it arund, then think again! Accrding t mental health experts, it is actually very pssible t turn int a glass-half-full kind f persn, and here’s what yu can d t see things in a brighter light.
36 Writing dwn yur ideas f an ptimistic tmrrw will make a huge difference when it cmes t yur verall attitude t life. Yu may als want t cnsider a serius challenge yu have in life right nw, and simply sit back and think abut all f the pssible psitive utcmes.
Chse t be ptimistic. Life is all abut chices. Yu can chse t spend the entire day reading r cleaning. Yu can make the call yu’ve been thinking abut fr a while r yu can put it ff fr anther day. What’s mre, yu can als chse t be psitive r yu can chse t simply carry n living as yu are. 37 And then carry n that way fr the rest f yur life.
Extend psitiveness t thers. Making thers feel gd abut themselves can have lasting psitive effects n yur wn life. Never frget t admire yur family, friends, and clleagues fr the gd things which they are ding in their lives, even if they dn’t directly affect yu. 38
Recgnize yur negative thught patterns. It’s fine t acknwledge that bad things in life might happen at any time. 39 Yet being verly negative can seriusly ruin yur chances f finding happiness in his life. Reframing yur awkwardly negative thughts int mre realistic patterns may be the key t helping yu maintain ptimism.
Practice gratitude. Spend sme time thinking abut all f the things yu have t be thankful fr. 40 Yu culd even chse t keep diaries, where yu can put dwn anything which makes yu smile. If nthing else, take a mment every nce in a while t stp, smile and be thankful fr the psitive things in life.
    Imagine a psitive future.
Frm the habit f keeping diaries.
Of curse, it’s als necessary t praise yurself.
Ignring reality isn’t the mst helpful methd either.
Being ptimistic starts with the decisin t be psitive.
It will ften prvide yu with an instant ptimism bst.
Take a mment t wrk ut hw realistic yur thughts really are.

It had been a few mnths since ur belved bxer Bama had passed away. He’d lived a gd, lng life. Alan and I didn’t have children. Our bxer was ur baby.
