    She had cme t the city t visit her daughter. On the way t the terminal, a thief had snatched ne f her bags. It had cntained half f the mney she’d brught with her. The ther half was rlled in a handkerchief and hidden under her bluse, s she frtunately still had sme mney left.
    The bus cnductr, driver, and ther passengers listened t her tale. After a few minutes, she stpped crying, remved sme cheese bread frm her bag, and began t eat, wrry still knitting her brw.
    An ld man in tattered clthes gt n the bus. He sat in the seat directly in frnt f the wman.
    After a few minutes, all seats were taken. The driver gt behind the wheel and started the engine. The bus cnductr cllected tickets and began asking us where we were getting ff. When he came t the ld man’s seat, he became suspicius and asked the ld man whether he had any mney. The ld man admitted that he did nt. He explained that he had spent all his mney this mrning when he’d accidentally gt n the wrng bus and nw he was trying t g hme.

But the Christmas Festival was different. The girls wre party clthes and many peple came t see them perfrm. Angelina had nly a plain gray dress that she had wrn t the event last year. And nw it was a little t shrt. Angelina appealed t her parents t buy ne fr her, a beautiful red dress in Frbes’ Stre. Her mther sighed, “Well, we cannt buy it. We have t be careful. Yu never knw when I might lse my jb.”
    All hpe was nt gne. There was a sign in the Frbes stre windw that said “layaway (分期付款)” . Angelina pulled ten wrn dllar bills frm her cat pcket. She ran t the stre and begged the salespersn, Mrs. Harding, t hld ‘her’ dress fr her. “Ok. But yu must cme back in tw weeks t pay the rest.” Angelina felt like jumping int the air. She was s happy that she tld Mrs. Harding abut the Avaln Service Club’s wrk and its Christmas party.

Sure enugh, the dlls’ dresses turned ut beautiful. She gt twenty dllars. Still, she was far frm having enugh mney fr her dress. She felt helpless as the final payment date arrived.
    She returned sadly t Frbes’ Stre, “I dn’t have enugh mney fr the dress.” Then she saw Mrs. Harding's eyes were red. She lked like she had been crying. She said the stre was clsing and she was lsing her jb.

Shaking with fear, I apprached it cautiusly and saw that it was a pigen(鸽子). It lked at me in fear, trying t pen its wings and struggling its feet, but apparently pwerless.
    S I called my grandpa and immediately set ut t give it a helping hand. Taking it in my hands, I felt a few drps f warmth n my hands. It was bld! I gently spread its wings and there were a few red feathers inside. "Dn't wrry. We'll get it ut alive," Grandpa said t me. Then he gt the first-aid kit. With sme cttn, we dried the bld, cleaned the wund and then put it under a hairdryer t dry. All went smthly, fr the pigen had n strength left t resist. There happened t be an empty birdcage at hme, s I put it in gently and added a little water and sme grains.
    Fr the next few days, the mment I gt hme frm schl, I wuld run t feed the pigen. And Grandpa helped a lt, tidying up the cage daily. Little by little, its strength returned. One evening, I fed it with the biscuit I was eating. It enjyed it! One week later, its wund almst healed; its feathers grew and it became brave. Whenever I sat at the table eating biscuits, it lked up at me, cing(咕咕地叫) cnstantly. T my jy, I culd als reach int the cage t tuch it. When I gently fingered its head, it playfully pecked at me. The camp was set up immediately as Steve knew all the tricks f an experienced wilderness camper. An afternn nap was abslutely a special treat in mid-summer. Hwever, the bys were waken up by the fierce barks f Brady. Outside, heavy smke filled the air and wind-blwn flame was skipping frm the tp f ne tree t anther. The lng dry summer turned the frest int a tinderbx. In a little while, Steve and Zach were inside their tent packing their belngings.

    A calf lay n the ice in the middle f the pnd. A cw, n dubt the calf’s mther, std nshre, shuting desperately. The calf struggled t get up but slipped and fell each time.
    The mrning sun seemed warmer. T warm. A. J. knew that the situatin was urgent. If the calf lay there t lng, she culd fall thrugh the ice and drwn. Dad eased the truck dwn the hill and stpped at the edge f the pnd. “N telling hw lng she’s been there,” he said. “The ice culd be abut t melt. I dn’t think we can risk it.” Dad shk his head, “It’s just nt safe.”

Hw much sweeter the jurney was when we made it a little smther and richer fr thers.

After all, it was Christmas time.

It was gray-white and had an range string tied t ne leg. My pigen came back! "It must be hungry," Grandpa grinned. Immediately, I fed it with grains and then tipted t the windw and clsed it, urging Grandpa t cage it. But he didn't. "Pigens need freedm," he explained t me patiently. I was hesitant but lking at the pigen wandering and pecking at the grains peacefully, I realized Grandpa was right! I turned back t the windw and pened it.
