    2021年高考英语二轮复习七选五专项练习五

1.Small talk is a good way to make friends. If you travel to other countries or have friends from abroad, do you know how to use small talk to make conversation?

In Britain, the best topic is the weather. British weather is changing all the time.

        (1)

Besides weather, its good to talk about gardens with British. You could say Those roses look really beautiful, dont they?     (2)    .So its also nice to start with What a lovely dog! What is his name?

In America, people like to talk about sports news ,such as American football and basketball.    (3)    So you might say Its a nice shirt! Where did you get it? Weather is a safe topic there, too.

           (4)    Dont ask people How old are you? Never ask: How much money do you make?It makes people uncomfortable. Dont ask strangers weather they are married.

         (5)    There are others in our daily life.

    A. You can start chatting by saying Its a lovely day today, isnt it?

    B. There are also a lot of topics to avoid during small talk.

    C. Friends are important to us all, but how to make friends is a problem.

    D. Americans also talk about clothes.

    E. Politics or religion is not a good topic.

    F. English people love their pets.

    G. Only a few topics are not used for small talk.

2.Body language is extremely important when it comes to making good first impressions. It's always helpful to know what body cues show you in a positive light, especially during interviews or networking when you're meeting someone for the first time.    (1)    Keep these tips in mind when you're interacting with another person.

Smile slowly. If you're too quick to come to a smile, your expression may not look genuine.Real smiles happen gradually, but remember not to do it too slowly because it can also look creepy.    (2)

        (3)    When you're nervous or excited, your voice may come out in a higher pitch.Take a deep breath and lower your pitch, because a deeper voice is considered to have more authority and confidence. In fact, even dogs respond better to deeper voices when you are trying to give them a command.

Make eye contact.    (4)    Don't go overboard and gaze without breaking eye contact, because that can make people feel uncomfortable.Spend the majority of the time making eye contact, but remember to briefly take breaks.

Lean.Move your body slightly forward toward the person you're talking to    (5)    However,if you want to show that you're relaxed, lean back a little bit.Don't overdo the leaning or it may either look like you have no idea of what personal space is if you lean forward too much or make you look uninterested and uppity if you lean too far back.

    A.Have good posture.

    B.Speak in a deeper voice.

    C.This reflects interest.

D.Do your best to imitate a natural smile by practicing in the mirror.

E.It can make a difference and even make you more likeable.

F.When talking to someone, making eye contact shows interest and also confidence.

G.It can make you look less professional and less confident and enthusiastic.

    3.Does failure really exist?

If you believe you have failed, then you have.  If you believe you dont have the ability to succeed, then you dont.     (1)    The moment you decide to give up or stop working toward your goals, failure is born.

        (2)

Most people give themselves an out without even realizing it. They are willing to work hard on reaching their goals, but only until the going gets too rough or their energy dies down.  Dont do that!     (3)    Never quit, never admit failure, and never lose heart.

Dont believe in a clear finish line for goals.

Its a good idea to set a general timeline, but remember that something will be beyond your control.    (4)    If you lock yourself into a given timeline, you might make yourself feel like a failure!  Instead, get a general idea of when youd like your goal to be completed. Then take it one day at a time and focus on making progress instead of reaching the finish line in as little time as possible.

Be sure that you dont see difficulties as failures.

Difficulties mean only one thing: its not time for your goal to be completed yet.  Thats it!  It doesnt mean you failed; it doesnt mean youre weak; it doesnt mean youll never achieve your goals.     (5)    Youve got to keep moving forward and find a way over, around, or through the difficulties.

    A. Never give up on yourself.

    B. Failure only exists in your own mind!

    C. Thats exactly how failure makes us feel.

    D. It simply means you have not done enough yet.

    E. You can never say exactly when your goal will be reached.

    F. Instead, make up your mind to make your goal happen, no matter what!

    G. Work hard towards your goal, and you will be likely to get good results.

4.In fact, before the invention of chopsticks, Chinese ancestors actually used hands to eat, but how did they eat soup and porridge?     (1)    Chinese started to use chopsticks about 3,000 years ago in Shang Dynasty.

The records of using chopsticks have been found in many written books but lack physical evidence.     (2)    One says that Jiang Ziya, an ancient wise man, created chopsticks. There also go around some other stories. But there is no exact history record about the invention. We can only say that smart ancient Chinese invented chopsticks.

Using two slim sticks to pick up food is actually not difficult. You can do it if you practice it for some time, even if you are a foreigner. The key to managing chopsticks is keeping one chopstick in position while moving the other to pick up food.

        (3)    Chopsticks are usually held in the right hand, and left-handed chopstick use is considered as improper in China. Playing with chopsticks is thought to be impolite.

         (4)    Chinese philosopher Confucius advised people to use chopsticks instead of knives because the metal knives remind people of cold weapons, which mean killing and violence.

If you are truly interested in chopsticks, you can pay a visit to the Shanghai Chopsticks Museum. The museum gathered more than 1,200 pairs of chopsticks from China, Korea, Japan and Thailand.    (5)

    5.Being Left-handed in a Right-handed World

The world is designed for right-handed people, but a tenth of the population prefer the left.     (1)    The answer to it remains a bit of a mystery. Since scientists have noticed that left-handedness tends to run in families, its assumed that left-handedness has a genetic(基因的)component to it.    (2)    In fact, identical twins, who share the same genes, can sometimes prefer to use different hands. There are also plenty of theories on what else might determine which hand you write with, but many experts believe that its kind of random.

Historically, the left side and left-handedness have been considered a negative thing by many cultures.     (3)    In some areas, the left hand became known as the unclean hand. In many religions, the right hand of God is the favored hand. For example, Jesus sits at Gods right side. Various activities and experiences become rude or even signs of bad luck when the left hand becomes involved. In some parts of Scotland, it is considered bad luck to meet a left-handed person at the start of a journey.    (4)    A person giving directions will put his left hand behind him and try to point with his right hand if necessary. In some Asian countries, eating with the left hand is considered impolite.

        (5)    People come to realize that left-handedness is natural. People even noticed that many famous people are left-handed, including Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Charlie Chaplin. Some researchers find out that lefties are more creative and can deal with abstract thinking better. The left-handedness is more easily adaptable to the right-handed world as well. Being left-handed is no longer a sad story now; instead, it is a wonderful gift or maybe it is something you should take pride in.

    A. In other words, left-handers are born that way.

    B. Left-handedness used to be regarded as a disability.

    C. The unfavorable associations of the use of the left hand among cultures are varied.

    D. Why do they prefer to use their left hand rather than their right hand for routine activities?

    E. Why do some parents force their left-handed children to become right-handed when writing?

    F. In Ghana, pointing, gesturing, giving or receiving items with the left hand is considered rude.

    G. Fortunately, nowadays most societies and cultures no longer reject left-handedness like before.
