1.Taking good notes is a time-saving skill that will help you to become a better student in several ways.     (1)    . Second, your notes are excellent materials to refer to when you are studying for a test. Third, note-taking offers variety to your study time and helps you to hold your interest.

You will want to take notes during classroom discussions and while reading a textbook or doing research for a report.     (2)    Whenever or however you take notes, keep in mind that note-taking is a selective process.     (3)

The following methods may work best for you.

Read the text quickly to find the main facts and ideas in it.

Carefully read the text and watch for words that can show main points and supporting facts.

Write your notes in your own words.

        (4)

Note any questions or ideas you may have about what was said or written.

As you take notes, you may want to use your own shorthand(速记). When you do, be sure that you understand your symbols and that you use them all the time.     (5)

    A. Use words ,not complete sentences.

    B. There are three practical note-taking methods.

    C. You must write your notes on separate paper.

    D. Otherwise, you may not be able to read your notes later.

    E. you will also want to develop your own method for taking notes.

    G. First, the simple act of writing something down makes it easier for you to understand and remember it.

    2.

    iPads vs Textbooks

What if you could have your whole backpack at the touch of your fingertips? In the first month of the Apple iPads release, 25million were sold! People all over the world use iPads for all sorts of different things, but one of their finest qualities is the ability to be a textbook.     (1)

To begin with, iPads are less expensive. Textbooks become outdated and schools have to buy new books, but with an iPad schools can update them for free.     (2)    Schools dont have to spend $500 every year for iPads because they last a while and can be updated.

        (3)    Students usually have multiple classes, which results in multiple textbooks. Heavy backpacks filled with books can cause back problem. A solution to that is an iPad, which only weighs 1.33 pounds and can hold all of a students textbooks.

Third, schools should get rid of their textbooks and get iPads because they have more capabilities. Some might think all of the apps are distracting, but the apps actually make iPads more efficient.     (4)    Textbooks cannot do those tasks, but iPads can easily do them with just a tap of the fingertip.

Lastly, iPads are a better choice for schools instead of textbooks because these devices allow students to access their learning anywhere at any time.     (5)    With iPads, they find it easier to get their homework done.

In conclusion, schools should get rid of their clumsy textbooks and switch to iPads. iPads have allowed this generation to have their entire backpack in the palm of their hands.

    A. Second, iPads cost less and are more popular.

    B. These tablets are perfect for busy students.

    C. Therefore, they can use the saved money for other programs.

    D. Moreover, in high school, textbooks have an average of 4.8 pounds each.

    E. iPads have already replaced textbooks in over 600 American counties.

    F. Schools have every reason to do away with their school books and switch to iPads.

    G. iPads absorb the need to buy calculators, dictionaries, and other items that are found within the device.

    3.Simple ways to get happy

We are not suggesting that you can reach a permanent state called happiness and remain there. But there are many ways to turn the path of anxiety, anger, and sadness into a state of happiness. Here are four ideas to get you started.    (1)

    Laugh out loud

Just expecting a happy, funny event can raise levels of pleasure-causing hormones (荷尔蒙) and lower production of stress hormones. Researchers at the University of California tested 16 men who all agreed they thought a certain videotape was funny. Half were told three days in advance they would watch it.    (2)    When they actually watched the video, their levels of stress hormones dropped greatly, while their levels of pleasure-causing hormones rose 27 percent.

Do one thing at a time

Edward Suarez, professor of medical psychology at Duck, found that people who do several things at the same time are more likely to have high blood pressure.    (3)    Instead of talking on the phone while cleaning the kitchen, sit down in a comfortable chair and turn your entire attention over to the conversation.

        (4)

Although relationships help take away stress, sometimes you need time to recharge and reflect on your own. Take yourself out to lunch or to a movie, or simply spend an afternoon reading at home, or looking through books in a bookstore.

    Practice mindfulness

        (5)    Instead of worrying about your check-up tomorrow while having dinner with your family, focus on the here and now food, the company, and the conversation.

    A. Spend time alone.

    B. Focus on the present.

    C. Take care of the soul.

    D. Take that finding seriously.

    E. Choose the ones that work for you.

    F. They started experiencing biological changes right away.

    G. Find a quiet place near your house and make it your secret place to escape.

    4.

How to pick a good book

It is not news that we spend more time texting(发短信)and surfing online than ever. But a recent study shows that more teenagers are reading good old-fashioned and ink-on-paper books. Reading is a good way to widen your knowledge and learn about yourself. You probably know how to find the best application programs for your phone.

        (1)

    Start with your interests.

Reading on your own isn’t like reading for school.    (2)     This could be ancient martial arts, readings in computers, or fashion design books. If you can name the subject, you can find books about it.

    Find your “type”

          (3)     Books of fiction, like novels or short-story collections, can transport you to another world or help you to imagine something beyond your own experience. Not all fiction is the same. Try some different types of fiction and see which one you prefer. Non-fiction books give you the “who”, “what”,

“when” and “why” of something. They tell stories suing facts, but that doesn’t mean they are dull.

    Read the “blurb(简介)”

The reviews and quotes on the back and inside covers of many books are known as  “blurbs”. These comments not only give you an idea of what the book is about, but also help you to pick out future books. If you find a book you really like, take a minute to read the blurb and see which authors praised the book.    (4)

        (5)

Your local library can provide you with a lot of great books. Explain your interests and mention any writers you like, and the librarian can point you towards books that you will like.

Finally, you’ll probably enjoy what you’re reading if you find a quiet place and make time for the book.

    A. Ask an expert

    B. Read in a quiet place

    C. Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction?

    D. You can pick something that suits your interests.

    E. But do you know how to pick a book that you will really like?

    F. It is necessary to work out what the book is mainly about before reading.

    G. Often, they will have similar styles, and you might find you like books by those authors, too.

    5.

Every animal sleeps, but the reason for this has remained foggy. When lab rats are not allowed to sleep, they die within a month.   (1)

One idea is that sleep helps us strengthen new memories.   (2)    We  know that, while awake, fresh memories are recorded by reinforcing (加强) connections between brain cells, but the memory processes that take place while we sleep have been unclear.

Support is growing for a theory that sleep evolved so that connections between neurons(神经元) in the brain can be weakened overnight, making room for fresh memories to form the next day.      (3)

Now we have the most direct evidence yet that he is right.  (4)  The synapses in the mice taken at the end of a period of sleep were 18 per cent smaller than those taken before sleep, showing that the connections between neurons weaken while sleeping.

If Tononis theory is right, it would explain why, when we miss a night`s, we find it harder the next day to concentrate and learn new information our brains may have smaller room for new experiences.

Their research also suggests how we may build lasting memories over time even though the synapses become thinner. The team discovered that some synapses seem to be protected and stayed the same size.   (5)  You keep what matters, Tononi says.

    A. We should also try to sleep well the night before.

    B. Its as if the brain is preserving its most important memories.

    C. Similarly, when people go for a few days without sleeping, they get sick.

    D. The processes take place to stop our brains becoming loaded with memories.

    E. Thats why students do better in tests if they get a chance to sleep after learning.

    F. Sleep is the price we pay for learning, says Giulio Tononi, who developed the idea.

    G. Tononis team measured the size of these connections, or synapses, in the brains of 12 mice.
