For Kim Duffysending away her teenage daughter was the best hope for saving the girl's life. Corinne, then 17, had been struggling with bulimia (贪食症) and anorexia (厌食症) for more than five years. Duffy and her husband, Terry, found a residential facility in Virginiaand Corinne signed on for a twomonth stay in the summer of 2009.

Today, Corinne's healthy and pursuing a master's degree in Colorado. She and her parents believe the holistic (整体) approach and individualized focus were key to her recovery. And they know they had access to unique resources. “We were fortunate, ”says Duffy. “We could pay for everything.”

But many can't. According to a report released in November 2014 by the Standing Committee on the Status of Womenbetween 600,000 and one million Canadians suffer from an eating disorder. Public in patient programs often won't admit patients until they're in lifethreatening condition. Private clinics often have a long waitlists and high costs—at Homewood, in Guelph, Ont., a room is $305 to $360 per day.

The Duffys' struggle led them to connect other families with the quality of care they received in the United States. In late 2013, they founded the WaterStone Clinica private eating disorder center in Toronto.

Since the facility opened, 170 clients have received treatment. They take yoga, do art therapy and participate in meal preparation, building reallife skills with a support team. Programs run on weekdays from 8 am to 2 pm, and notably, so far WaterStone has no waiting list.

But this approach is costly: approximately $650 per day. Realizing that the price tag puts WaterStone out of reach for many, the Duffys created the WaterStone Foundation—a charity that provides aid to patients who can't afford treatment the following year. Candidates are assessed by two committees that make a decision based on clinical and financial need. Since 2014the foundation has helped 100 people.

Duffy also wants to change the public system. In June of this year, the foundation awarded $170,000 to four Ontario hospitals offering creative treatment to eating disorder patients. Yes, people need private treatment she says, but it's important to help out on a broader scaletoo.

    本文属于记叙文,介绍了一对加拿大夫妇为了帮助有厌食症和贪食症的病人而创立了私人诊所,以及为帮助贫穷患者而设立慈善机构的故事。体现了人们要互相关怀互相帮助的人文思想。

This year marks the 172th anniversary of Paul Gauguin's birth. He lived for just 54 years but he packed his brief life with activity.

The French painter spent his early childhood in Peru before returning to France. As an adult, he continued to travel a lot. Most famously, he spent much of the last decade of his life in Tahiti, an island in southern Pacific Ocean. Indeed, Gauguin is best known for his colorful paintings of Tahitians and their culture.

The restlessness of this great painter has been normal among modern artists since the middle of the 19th century. They're never satisfied for long with a certain style or way of life. Once something becomes conventional, it's turned down.

The artistic culture that Gauguin developed from was that of Impressionism (印象派). Painters like Claude Monet had wanted to paint how they saw the world, not how their teachers taught them it should be seen. Gauguin, and similar artists like his friend Vincent van Gogh, moved even further away from “respectable” art than the Impressionists. For them, it was not simply a matter of seeing the world differently, but feeling and thinking about it differently, too.

Gauguin saw, felt and thought differently from most members of European society. He thought that European culture was too fancy and not spontaneous. This is why he turned to the traditions of other parts of the world, like Africa, and, eventually, Tahiti. Artists like Gauguin used the word “primitive” for these cultures, but not as a negative term. For him, Europe, in becoming modern, industrial and scientific, seemed less natural than other parts of the world.

In truth, Gauguin's paintings may be unconventional but they are certainly not “primitive”. They are the work of a painter with great awareness of what he was doing. It was this awareness that made him such an important painter for those that came after, in the 20th century. When we look closely at the works of Gauguin we begin to understand Pablo Picasso, and especially Henri Matisse, a little better.

DTo compare Gauguin's painting style with Vincent van Gogh's.

    D

A name is more than just a word. It carries the weight of a person's whole identity. A name can represent a person's ethnicity (种族) and culture, or show respect for their ancestral roots. A selfgiven name may represent a person's beliefs or chosen identity.

Everyone has the right to have their name pronounced correctly. It is a sign of respect for a person's individuality. A person's name is to him or her the sweetest and most important sound in any language Dale Carnegie writes in his book How to Win Friends and Influence People. Behind each name is a story, and when a name is anglicized (英语化), mispronounced, or ignored, that story is dismissed.

A name mispronounced for a long time can negatively impact a person's attitude toward their own identity. It can create feelings of shame or embarrassment because they are made to feel like a burden. In the long term, this might cause someone to distance themselves from their roots. They may begin shying away from their native language, culture, and family for the sake of fitting in.

In order to avoid this, many international students living in the US choose English names. People shouldn't have to ignore their identities for the sake of someone else's convenience.

Everyone makes mistakes, and not everyone can get a name right on the first try. Mispronouncing a name repeatedly, however, shows a lack of effort. It is not okay to be comfortable with mispronouncing names, and being unfamiliar with a language is no excuse.

If you're unsure whether you're pronouncing a name correctly, just ask. Think of it as a way to expand and strengthen understanding, both personally and culturally. When meeting someone for the first time, make sure that you heard the name correctly. It doesn't take a lot to simply repeat the name back. Spell it out. Write it down. Do whatever you have to do to get the name right. Making the effort to correctly pronounce someone's name is an essential part of cultural competency (文化素养). Without this, we cannot expect to show respect and tolerance for our diverse community.

Eric was working in a selling business. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn't wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother's Day, and he usually tried to make it “back home”but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, “I know what I will do. I'll send my mother some roses.”

He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young man talking to the girl in it. “How many roses can I get for fifty dollars, Ms? ” the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with something else.

No. I have to have roses he said, “my mom was badly sick last year and I didn't get to spend much time with her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that is her favorite.” he was stubborn.

The girl in the shop looked up at Eric and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Eric was touched by the boy's voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Eric had been blessed (幸运的) in his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy's roses.

The girl looked at the young man and said, “OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.” The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran down from the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.

Eric ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have it delivered to his mother. After that, with a relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a graveyard (墓地)

    答案

    Paragraph 1

Eric stopped his car and followed the young man. The young man went up to a small monument, and knelt down. He carefully put the flowers before it and began to sob. “Dear mom, I love you. But how I regret I didn't tell it when you were with me. I knew you loved roses, but why didn't I send the flowers to you when I could still see you and talk with you? Now, you have gone to another world. How I regret I didn't tell you I love you so much! ”

    Paragraph 2

Eric went into the car in tears. His mother's home wasn't far from here, but he hadn't seen her for a long time. He didn't have a talk with her for a long time and say how much he loved her. He turned the car and drove towards the road quickly to the flower shop. He asked the girl to give back the flowers because he wanted to send them personally to his mom.
