How do young children learn to have good values? How can parents teach their children about the importance of kindness and patience? At a time more and more parents worry about the violent images (暴力形象) their children see on TV and on the Internet. So many parents are turning to fairy tales. They want to teach their children how to behave in society by this way.

It is believed that fairy tales have a great influence on children because they describe the two sides of good and evil (邪恶) very clearly. When children hear the tales, they learn to care about others' feelings. In each tale, they can see that there are many different kinds of people in the world and that we all have a choice about what kind of person we want to be. We can choose to do good actions, rather than bad ones, in our lives.

What kind of values can children learn from fairy tales? In The Princess and the Pea, a poorly dressed girl says she is a princess. Few people believe her, so she is given a difficult test. When she passes the test, we learn that her dream comes true because she stays true to herself. In The Little Mermaid (《小美人鱼》), the mermaid, who lives under the sea, wishes to be with the humans on land. Through her experiences, we learn about the importance of living with and accepting other cultures.

Teaching values is probably the main reason for encouraging children to read fairy tales. These tales can teach children lessons about human relationships that have been accepted around the world for many centuries. This might be the reason why they have been around for so long and will not disappear any time soon.

21Why do fairy tales have a great influence on children?

ABecause fairy tales can teach them how to make a choice.

BBecause fairy tales can help them get higher scores at school.

CBecause they can learn how to avoid most difficulties in their lives.

DBecause good and evil are shown in a way they can easily understand.

It is believed that fairy tales have a great influence on children because they describe the two sides of good and evil (邪恶) very clearly.

22Mermaid may be helpful when children ________.

    Aare given a difficult test

    Bmake friends with foreigners

Cwish to be a princess or prince

Dare going to lie to their parents

Through her experiences, we learn about the importance of living with and accepting other cultures.

23The author writes the text mainly to ________.

    Aintroduce some fairy tales

Btalk about the history of fairy tales

Cdiscuss how to improve human relationships

Dshow how fairy tales help children shape values

Teaching values is probably the main reason for encouraging children to read fairy tales. These tales can teach children lessons about human relationships可知,教给孩子们价值观可能是鼓励孩子们读童话故事的主要原因。

Career success could be predicted as early as kindergarten, according to a 20year study recently published in the American journal Public Health.

Researchers from Pennsylvania State University and Duke University tracked more than 700 children from across the US between kindergarten and age 25 and found a significant connection between their social skills as kindergarteners and their success as adults two decades later.

In the research, teachers assessed how the kindergarteners interacted with each other socially using a range of criteria like whether they cooperate with their peers without being encouraged, whether they're helpful to others, whether they're good at understanding feelings, and whether they can solve problems on their own.

Researchers then kept track of whether the students go on to graduate from high school on time, get a college degree, and find and keep a fulltime job by 25. They also monitored the participants' involvement with crime, drug abuse, public assistance, and mental health issues.

The results showed that socially capable children are far more likely to earn a college degree and have a fulltime job by 25 than those with limited social skills. Those with limited social skills also have a higher chance of getting arrested, binge drinking, and applying for public housing.

This study shows that helping children develop social and emotional skills is one of the most important things we can do to prepare them for a healthy future said Kristin Schubert, program director at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which funded the research, in a release. “From an early age, these skills can determine whether a child goes to college or prison, and whether they end up employed or addicted.”

The good news, according to Damon Jones, lead author of the study, is that intervention (干预) at a young age can help improve social and emotional skills.

This research by itself doesn't prove that higher social ability can lead to better outcomes later on he said. “But when combined with other research, it is clear that helping children develop these skills increases their chances of success in school, work, and life.”

24What did the 20year study find?

ASocial skills play a key role in children's development.

BHelpful children understand others' feelings better.

CMost kindergarteners can solve problems alone.

DOutgoing children cooperate with their peers easily.

    答案:A

故选A

    25What're Paragraph 3 and 4 mainly about?

AWhen the researchers began their study.

BHow the researchers conducted the study.

CHow long it took to complete the study.

DWhat factors were studied by the researchers.

26What should parents do to help their children to succeed according to Kristin Schubert?

ATeach them some basic living skills.

BTell them to keep off alcohol.

    CCoach them in their lessons.

DTeach them how to cooperate with others.

This study shows that helping children develop social and emotional skills is one of the most important things we can do to prepare them for a healthy future said Kristin Schubert, program director at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which funded the research, in a release.

27According to the passage, it is probably intended for ________.

    Ateenagers Bdoctors

    Ceducators Dgeneral readers

About 6 years ago, I was on a plane next to a woman. I was tired and wanted to take a nap. But before I could go into “ignore pattern”she tapped me on the shoulder to introduce herself.

    Hi, my name is Helga

We got to talking and eventually it came up that I had started an organization in high school called RAKE (Random Acts of Kindness, Etc.). As I described what we did, Helga got very serious and told me that she admired me for that. She told me a story about the last time she had flown. She was on the way to Arizona because she had gotten sudden news that her dad's health was on the decline. Later her father's physician called to inform her that her dad had rather suddenly passed away. For the 3hour plane ride, she sat in silence around strangers.

When she arrived at the airport in Arizona, she walked to the nearest wall, sat down, and cried. And here is the part I'll never forget about Helga's story. For 2 hours she sat and wept while thousands walked to and fro in the airport. Helga looked at me and said, “Houston, not a single person stopped and asked if I was okay that day.” It was that day that I realized how much we need each other. It was that day I realized that kindness isn't normal.

Kindness isn't normal. That has stuck with me all these years especially now. I work in schools nationwide speaking about sympathy, kindness, empathy (同理心) and love. I'm reminded all the time that, for many of us, kindness is not usually our default_setting. We spend so much time worrying about our problems, our lives, our insecurity, getting to our flight so we walk by or ignore people in need of help.

So, I've made it my mission to do my part in sharing stories with students, teachers, and parents about our need for character and sympathy. I'm always be on the lookout for the little opportunities that surround me every day to do something nice.

28What impressed the author most about Helga's story?

AHelga's anxiety over her father's sudden illness.

BHelga had no one to talk to on her flight to Arizona.

CHelga was ignored by people around her when she cried.

DHelga couldn't get over her sadness over her father's death.

For 2 hours she sat and wept while thousands walked to and fro in the airport. Helga looked at me and said, Houston, not a single person stopped and asked if I was okay that day.(她坐在那里哭了两个小时,而成千上万的人在机场走来走去。

29Which can best explain the underlined part “default setting” in Paragraph 5?

    AUsual way of doing things.

    BUnexpected way to do things.

    CIgnorance to people around.

    DBiggest surprise to others.

    答案:A

We spend so much time worrying about our problems, our lives, our insecurity, getting to our flight so we walk by or ignore people in need of help. 故选A

Everybody, at some point in their lives, has experienced failure. It could be something as simple as not getting the job you wanted, or getting fewer marks even after hard work. But what makes you is not your failure, but how you get back up after being hit.

Once, a young school boy was caught in a fire accident in his school and was assumed that he would not live. His mother was told that he was sure to die, for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body. Even if he were to survive, he would be lame throughout his life.

But the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to be lame. Much to the amazement of the doctor, he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist down, he had no motor ability. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Eventually he left the hospital. But his determination to walk was unshakable. At home, when he was not in bed, he had to stay in a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the fence, raised himself up and then began dragging himself along the fence, firmly determined. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided. With his iron determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk on and off, then to walk by himself and then to run.

He began to walk to school, and then run to school, to run for the joy of running. Later in college he was on the track team.

In February 1934, in New York City's Madison Square Garden, this young man who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope to run—this determined young man, Dr Glenn Cunningham, ran the world's fastest mile.

A good example of the power of positive thinking and faith in one's self, Glenn Cunningham continues to be an inspiration for many, and his story, a brilliant evidence to how one can bounce back even when all difficulties are piled against one, to the degree that death seemed the preferable option.

    Friendship, do you value?

Friendship is a gift of God.But it may be taken for granted in some cases and not valued. __36__ Say one has no child even after many years of marriage and the other has many children, more than they can manage. What do you think? Will the couple with many children value the children as much as the couple who has none? Everything is relative in life.We value what we don't have and give less value to what is freely available to us. __37__

Why should we value friendships? What qualities does a good friend bring to our relationship that makes the friendship so valuable? Let's examine some of these.

Judgment—A good friend is rarely judgmental. We can be open in our behavior with our good friends because we know that they will not judge us. __38__ With other people our actions and behavior are always calculated and guarded and that takes away lots of pleasure from our life.

Share sorrow and losses—A friend can be depended upon to share all our problems and sorrows. __39__ Once I saw the image of a man left alone in a village after an earthquake. The whole village got killed except this man. With whom, will this man share his sorrow? A friend gives us this gift.

Hope—During our times of trouble, only a friend comes forward and gives us encouragement and hope. __40__

AThis sharing may not reduce the loss but helps us unburden ourselves.

BThis is no small gift of friendship.

CSome of us are blessed with good friends.

    DFriendship is one such relationship.

EIt is similar to a case of two couples.

FWe can enjoy this freedom only with friends.

GWith that inspiration, we regain confidence in ourselves.

With other people our actions and behavior are always calculated and guarded and that takes away lots of pleasure from our life.(和其他人在一起我们的行动和行为总是被评价,这带走了我们生活中的很多乐趣)提到和其他人之间没有那么多乐趣,因此可得知选项FWe can enjoy this freedom only with friends.

Share sorrow and losses—A friend can be depended upon to share all our problems and sorrows. This sharing may not reduce the loss but helps us unburden ourselves.(这种分享或许不能减少损失,但是可以帮助我们摆脱负担)切题。故选A

Dannis was waiting at the airline ticket counter when he first noticed the young woman with shiny black hair pulled tightly into a knot. She wore black boots of soft leather. Dannis struggled to see her face, for she was ahead of him in line, but it was not until she bought her ticket and turned to walk away that he realized her beauty, which was fairskinned and bigeyed. She seemed aware that he was staring at her and lowered her gaze abruptly.

His flight was leaving in an hour. To kill time, Dannis stepped into an airport bar and ordered a Scotch. While sipping it, he watched the flow of travelers through the terminal (航站楼) until he caught sight of the blackhaired girl in the leather coat again, deep in conversation with a blonde girl (金发女孩). Invite her for a drink Dannis hesitated. In another instant, the two women separated, neither of whose directions was toward him.

When next he saw her, Dannis was buying a magazine and became aware someone was pushing him. At first, he was startled (受惊吓的) that anyone would be so close as to touch him, but when he saw who it was, he smiled.

    Busy place Dannis said.

She looked up at him and blushed. Wordlessly, she moved away and joined the crowds in the terminal.

Dannis was at the counter with his magazine, but when he reached into his pocket for his wallet, the pocket was empty. Where could I have left it? His mind was racing, the credit cards, the cash, the identification card...His stomach stirred with something very like fear. The girl who was so near to me he said to himself. All at once he understood she had picked his pocket. What shall he do?

First, find a policeman, tell him what has happened. He would probably never see his wallet again. Dannis gritted his teeth. When glancing around for the police, suddenly, he spotted the blackhaired girl, seated against a front window of the terminal. She seemed absorbed in a book.

    答案

    Paragraph 1

A seat beside her was empty, and Dannis occupied it. He felt a wave of anger swept over him. Where is my wallet he yelled. The blackhaired girl glanced up from her reading, with a confused look on her face.Dannis stood up, glared at her and shouted, You stole my wallet The crowds began to gossip. The girl turned deadly pale, looking so restless that words failed her. A strange silence hung in the air. Abruptly, she leaped from the seat.

    Paragraph 2

The girl ran and Dannis ran after her. After a while, Dannis finally grabbed her by the arm. At exactly that moment, a policeman approached them and asked about what happened. Dannis hastened to explain it while the girl frowned with a shake of her head. After further enquiries, the policeman took out a wallet and handed it to Dannis, adding that someone had found it in the toilet. What a mistake he had made! Overwhelmed by guilt, Dannis made an apology to the girl.
