When most high school students complain about having to wake up extra earlythey're usually referring to a swim practice before class or the lastminute study before a test. But that was never the case for Corey Patrickwho woke up at 430 every morning last year in order to arrive on time at Tarrant High School in Alabama.

Patrick had attended Tarrant City Schools since his fourth gradebut things got difficult when his family moved to a town 14 miles away.Even though his family didn't have any forms of transportationPatrick didn't want to miss out on his senior year with friendsso he woke up at 430 every morning in order to make it to a 541 am.bus that would help him get to Tarrant on time. And just as he had done every other school day of the yearPatrick got up one morning to start the journey from his home to his high school; the only obvious difference that morning was that he was wearing his graduation gown (毕业礼服)which made that day's bus driverDeJuanna Beasleytake some photos of him.She then shared them online with these wordsYou tell me this isn't determination. He got on my bus to go to his graduationand no one was with him.Sometimes it's all in what you want out of life.I was so proud of this young man.

That was soon shared by many people onlineand it caught the attention of radio host Rickey Smileywho surprised Patrick by giving him a car later.Smiley confirmed that he would make sure that Patrick received help with getting his driver's license.A GoFundMe was also created for Patrickwhich has raised over $20,000.And Patrick has got a scholarship (奖学金) to Jacksonville Universitywhere he plans to study computer science.

1Why was Patrick different from most students when it comes to rising early?

AIt had something to do with study.

BIt was a part of daily life for him.

CHe was unwilling to get up early.

DHe spent more time in studying.

2What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

APatrick dressed poorly on his graduation day.

BIt took Patrick an hour to get to the bus stop.

CThe driver was moved by Patrick's story.

DThere was no school in Patrick's town.

3What does the underlined word “That” in the last paragraph refer to?

APatrick's request for help on the Internet.

    BThe difficulties that Patrick experienced.

    CThe information about Patrick's university.

DThe message published online by the driver.

4Who gave Patrick practical support rather than money?

    AGoFundMe.

    BRickey Smiley.

    CPatrick's high school.

    DJacksonville University.

Rickey Smiley]

Exercise is good for us.It reduces the risks of dying from all causesincluding cancer and heart disease. But many people who work all week have little time for exercise.Sothey might try to do something to increase their heart rates over the weekend—go for a long runtake a bike ride or hike in the mountains. But is it healthy to avoid exercise during the workweek and then try to fit it all in during the weekend?

A new study suggests thatyesit is healthy.Australian researchers at the University of Sydney did the study. It took place over a nineyear period.During that timethe researchers looked at the selfreported exercise habits and health examinations of more than 63,000 adults in England and Scotland. Then they connected that information to death records.

The researchers found that people who exercised only one or two days a week improved their chances of living longer than people who did not exercise at all.Even those who are fat could extend(延长)their lives by exercising a couple of days per week.

Emmanuel Stamatakis is the senior author of the study. He says that he found it very encouraging that even people who exercised as little as one or two times a week appear to lower their risk of early death. In other wordstheir health improves even if they don't meet the suggested weekly amount of physical activity.Howeverto be in the best healthStamatakis says more exercise is better.

The WHO suggests that the adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate (适度的) to intense (剧烈的) activity per week. For the best resultsthe organization suggests 75 minutes per week of intense physical activity.

Howeverif you are busy with work and family dutiesexercise as much as you can.

5In which part of a website can we find this text?

    AScience.      BNews.

    CSports. DHealth.

6What can we learn about the study?

AIt was carried out in three places.

BIt lasted for more than nine years.

CIt studied both children and adults.

DIt was led by Emmanuel Stamatakis.

根据第二段中的It took place over a nineyear period可知,B项正确,其余选项均与原文意思不符。]

    7What does the study find?

AA little exercise is better than none.

BWe'd better do exercise on weekdays.

CFat people usually live shorter than thin people.

DExercise habits have a big influence on death.

8What does Emmanuel Stamatakis suggest doing?

APaying attention to the risk of early death.

BTrying to do more exercise if we have time.

CGetting at least 150 minutes of activity a week.

DAvoiding doing much intense physical activity.

根据第四段最后一句Howeverto be in the best healthStamatakis says more exercise is better可知B项正确。]

    C

When Lenore Skenazy let her 9yearold son take the New York subway home by himself 10 years agoyou would have thought that she'd carried out a crime. Now Skenazy started the movement Free Range (放养的) Kids to bring up safe and independent children.Just this monthUtah became a freerange statechanging its law to protect parents from being charged with neglect (疏忽)for letting their kids walk aloneor wait in a car for an adult.

Skenazy argues that the risks of giving children some freedom are exaggerated (夸大)Skenazy's mother used to send her outside at 5 to walk to school. That was just normal back then. And suddenly we hear stories about parents getting punished for letting their 10yearold play outside.

We get so used to not knowing our neighborsnot letting our kids walk to schoolor play outsidethat nowadaysthe kids are either in a car or in the backyardand they don't get to know the neighborhood. In factthe world has become safer. We have the technologies to keep track of almost everything our kids do.And so you think you must control themand you think your child is something that has to be tracked like a package.

The famous case for many parents was the Etan Patz case in New York in 1979.Patz's parents gave him permission for the first time to walk to the bus stop nearby. He was killed. The story is so terrible that we remember it two generations later. And we don't allow our kids to walk alone because of one terrible thing that happened 39 years ago.But we don't sayI want to drive you to the dentistbut what if we get in a car accident? Think of those people who died in a car accident 39 years ago.I don't want to be like them.Nowe're not going. And we recognize that it would be funny to think that way.

9What do we know about Lenore Skenazy?

AShe used to have full control of her son.

BShe was in favor of Utah's previous law.

CShe suggests kids be allowed more freedom.

DShe was once punished for neglecting her son.

10Which of the following is a reason why kids are kept at home nowadays?

    APeople remain distant.

    BKids dislike outdoor activities.

    CParents know little about accidents.

DThe crime rate is slightly increasing.

根据第三段的We get so used to not knowing our neighbors...and they don't get to know the neighborhood可知,当今孩子常被留在家中的一个原因就是人与人之间关系的疏远。]

11What's the author's attitude towards parents' act of keeping track of their kids?

    AUnclear. BSupportive.

    CIndifferent. DUnfavorable.

12What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?

ATo prove accidents are like crimes.

BTo warn parents of a terrible crime.

CTo argue against some parents' worry.

DTo point out the real danger to children.
