Consumer electronics once again topped the list of the most wanted gifts this holiday season.

“Seventy-six percent of consumers who plan to buy holiday gifts say that they will spend money or buy at least one technology product; definitely a solid vote of confidence for technology.”

Steve Koenig is with the Consumer Electronics Association. He says the group’s latest research also shows that Americans this year are spending more on technology products. “Here in 2012, $252 on average——the technology spend for consumers th is year.”

From tablet computers to smart phones, American shoppers have been lining up to get the newest and coolest electronic devices on the market. There are more choices today than ever before. "It's kind of hard to make a decision."

Tablet computers are one of the best-selling products this year. Brian Tong is Senior Editor of CNET.com. The website reports on tech news and examines the latest electronic products. He says the Apple iPad Mini is one of the most popular tablets. Its starting price is $329. One of Apple’s biggest competitors is the Google Nexus 7. It starts at $199.

“Its hardware is more powerful than what’s in the iPad Mini, but also it offers you a lot of things like maps that work better than Apple’s maps.

But Brian Tong says there is one reason why people may like the iPad Mini more than the Nexus 7. “If you just want to read books and surf the Internet, you don’t really need to get an iPad Mini, but if you want the largest robust group of apps (应用软件) that’s where the iPad and Apple’s ecosystem shines the most.”

Elman Chacon is with the electronics store Best Buy. He says another hot product this season is smart cameras. They connect to the Internet through WiFi. This makes it easy for users to email or upload photographs directly from the camera.

“You can literally take a picture and upload it into your Facebook in a matter of seconds. These things are pretty cool because they do a lot of things.”

Streaming media boxes also connect to the Internet. People are able to watch web content such as movies and YouTube videos on their televisions. Another popular item is wireless speaker systems. The newest ones work with any device that has Bluetooth technology, including smart phones, laptops and tablets.

      28. According to Brian Tong, why may people prefer the iPad Mini to the Google Nexus 7?

      A. Because it is cheaper.

      B. Because it has more functions.

      C. Because you can read books and surf the Internet with it.

    D. Because it offers you a lot of things like maps that work better than Apple’s maps.

Batteries can power anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri(MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.

“To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density(密度)”said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. “The radioisotope(放射性同位素) battery can provide power density that is much higher than chemical batteries.”

Kwon and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, presently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro systems (M/NEMS). Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe.

“People hear the word ‘nuclear’ and think of something very dangerous,” he said, “However, nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems.”

His new idea is not only in the battery’s size, but also in its semiconductor(半导体). Kwon’s battery uses a liquid semi conduct or rather than a solid semiconductor.

“The key part of using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure(晶体结构) of the solid semiconductor,” Kwon said, “By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”

Together with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery. In the future, they hope to increase the battery’s power, shrink i ts size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that battery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair.

      32. Which of the following is true of Jae Kwon?

    A. He teaches chemistry at MU.

    B. He developed a chemical battery.

      C. He is working on a nuclear energy source.

    D. He made a breakthrough in computer engineering.

    【答案】C

【解析】细节理解题。根据第一段的University of Missouri(MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient及第三段的叙述可知,Kwon在研究一种核能电池,所以C项正确。

      33. Jae Kwon gave examples in Paragraph 4_________.

      A. to show chemical batteries are widely applied.

      B. to introduce nuclear batteries can be safely used.

      C. to describe a nuclear-powered system.

    D. to introduce various energy sources.

    【答案】B

       【解析】细节理解题。根据文章第四段可知Kwon举例的目的是为了说明核能电池是安全性。

      34. Liquid semiconductor is used to _________.

      A. get rid of the radioactive waste

      B. test the power of nuclear batteries.

      C. decrease the size of nuclear batteries

    D. reduce the damage to lattice structure.

    【答案】D

【解析】 细节理解题。根据part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure(晶体结构) of the solid semiconductor,”“By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”可知,通过使用液态半导体材料,可减少对晶体结构的破坏。

      35. The text is most probably a ________.

      A. science news report B. book review

      C. newspaper ad D. science fiction story

    【答案】A

     【解析】推理判断题。本文讲述了Kwon的原子能电池的有关情况,文章体裁应属于科普文章,所以A项正确。

    第二节  书面表达(满分25)

    你校将开展禁毒宣传, 请你根据下面的要点写一篇短文。短文内容需包括青少年吸毒原因分析、毒品危害,并给同学们提出建议,以便让同学们懂得如何远离毒品。

    1. 毒品交易日益泛滥,每年浪费8000亿美元;

    2.严重危害健康,加速死亡,导致和诱发犯罪。
    3 远离毒品的建议

    考纲点评:本文紧扣日常生活中,既考查孩子们英语表达能力,又通过作文为孩子们树立正确的人生观和价值观;写作时注意文章布局,理清文章思路,在尽量表达自己观点的同时,多使用好词好句。

    参考范文:

In modern society, drugs are becoming a more and more serious problem in the world. The trade of drugs is widespread, which costs up to $800 billion every year.

As we all know, drugs do great harm to our health, not only causing people to die at an early age,but also directly contributing to the happening of crimes. As is shown on the chart above, 30% of the teenagers taking drugs are cheated into doing it, and 50% are driven by curiosity. Another 15% just seek excitements or try to get rid of their anxieties, and the rest try it for some other reasons.

In my opinion, in order to protect us students from drugs, we should be careful to make friends and stay away from those who always behave badly. Also, it's very important for us to lead a healthy lifestyle and hold positive attitudes towards life.
