A recent documentary produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has caused a stir in China and in the UK.
The documentary, titled Are Our Kids Tough Enough? focuses on five Chinese teachers who are sent to teach 50 UK teens at a school in Hampshire.
The teachers instruct the students for a month. The pupils are then tested, and the results are compared to the ones of those who have continued in the regular UK education system. The idea is to see if the Chinese method improves academic performance.
The Chinese teachers use their own teaching methods but receive strong resistance from the students. A clip from the documentary online shows some problems, with Chinese teachers calling their students lazy and lacking in discipline, while the students say the high pressure and harsh teachers are driving them crazy.
This has aroused a new debate in both China and the UK, with some arguing the teenagers need more regulation and discipline. Others say Chinese methods encourage rote learning (死记硬背) instead of independent thinking. For instance, Chinese language teachers should do more than pass on knowledge about words and characters. They should inspire students, helping them feel the sentiment from Chinese literature. This is a higher level of teaching.
Yang Dongping, dean of the 21st Century Education Research Institute, says, “The Chinese teaching methods are designed to strictly train the majority. Foreign teaching methods, however, are more natural and relaxing, and designed to inspire students’ interest in learning. Education methods are based on culture. That is why a successful education method in one place may not work that well when simply ‘transplanted’ into another place.”
Yang Dongping says, “The documentary does reflect some problems rooted in traditional Chinese teaching methods. Nobel prize winner, Yang Zhenning, gave a very fair comment on this issue. He said the Chinese-style education method works for most ordinary qualified students effectively, helping them reach high standards. However, it may weaken the training for high-potential outstanding students.”
1. Why are five Chinese teachers sent to teach 50 UK teens?
A. To test the intelligence of the UK teens.
B. To help the school improve their teaching efficiency.
C. To do some practical research into the UK education system.
D. To test the effectiveness of Chinese teaching methods.
2. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “harsh” in the fourth paragraph?
A. Extremely strict B. Quite friendly
C. Rather cold D. Very attractive
3. According to Yang Dongping, Chinese teaching methods ______.
A. fit all countries B. could be improved
C. are the best in the world D. are not as good as British methods
根据第三段中的“The idea is to see if the Chinese method improves academic performance.”
根据画线词前的“Chinese teachers calling their students lazy and lacking in discipline, while the students say the high pressure and”可知，中国老师说学生懒惰和缺乏纪律性，学生则说是压力太大和严厉的老师让他们发狂，由此可知画线词词义为“严厉的”，故A项正确。
根据倒数第二段“The Chinese teaching methods are designed to strictly train the majority. Foreign teaching methods, however, are more natural and relaxing, and designed to inspire students’ interest in learning. Education methods are based on culture.”
One spring day, once the flowers have begun to open, a bee will hover (盘旋) and zip through your yard and dive-bomb your picnic table. While you're thinking about avoiding an attack, that bee is focused on something else entirely: me.
A honeybee has about six weeks to live. Today, like most days, her task is to fly as many as three miles from home, stick her long, straw-like tongue into a hundred or so flowers. When the bee has had her fill, shell fly home. There the bee will deposit what she has got into the mouth of one of her co-workers, who will relay it to another, and so on for about 20 minutes, until the mixture is ready to be placed into the comb. Then she and her 50 000 or so mates will hover in the dark all night every night, flapping their wings to create hot, breezy conditions to remove the water from the mixture. Several sunrises later, they will seal me off in a golden cell of beeswax. In her lifetime, our bee may visit 4,000 flowers, and yet will produce only one-twelfth of a tea spoon of me.
The average American consumes nearly a pound and a half of me every year in tea, on toast, and beyond. If I do say so myself, I am a timeless treasure. Literally---I never go bad.
Alas, my good health is not guaranteed. The problem lies in the growth of industrial agriculture and the use of pest control chemicals, as well as changes in weather patterns, all of which reduce the number of flowers bees have to visit I'd appreciate your letting your own garden grow just a little wild My future depends on all of us fostering spring and summers wild flowers, thus helping the bees, who give so much---to you, to me---without ever asking for anything in return..
4. What does " me" refer to in the passage?
A. The flower B. The bee.
C. Water D. Honey
5. What is the 2nd paragraph mainly about?
A. Bees' special talent B. Bees' hard work.
C. Bees' living environment. D. Bees' social behavior.
6. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To appeal for help for honeybees.
B. To talk about the history of a treasure.
C. To put forward techniques for gardeners.
D. To argue against the control of chemicals.
根据me前的“While you're thinking about avoiding an attack, that bee is focused on something else entirely”可知，当你在想如何避免蜜蜂的攻击时，其实蜜蜂完全专注于其他的东西——蜜，由此可知me指的就是蜜，故D项正确。
根据最后一段中的“thus helping the bees, who give so much---to you, to me---without ever asking for anything in return.”
Your colleague’s sharp comment keeps replaying in your mind. Two of your students are trapped in a “he said/she said” battle. When you reflect on your emotional reactions, you sometimes get caught up in cycles of negative feelings, which can make you feel even worse. If so, the answer may lie in a skill called “self-distancing”，the ability to take a step back and view yourself more objectively. According to a research, when people adopt self-distancing while discussing a difficult event, they make better sense of their reactions, experience less emotional suffering, and display fewer signs of stress.
But what might self-distancing look like in action? Consider a typical “he said/she said” student conflict where they are each focusing on their own feelings. One is thinking，“I can’t believe he did that to me.” And another insists, “She really hurt my feelings.” However, if you ask them to take the self-distancing, they might step outside of themselves and ask broader questions: “Why was he so hurt in this situation?” or “How did her anger affect him?”
Although this approach may sound too simple to be effective, studies indicate that a change in point of view can have a powerful effect on the way people think, feel, and behave. Here are several different techniques you can try.
First，consider how a thoughtful friend might respond after quietly observing their situation. Besides, avoid using the pronoun “I”. Focus on using third-person pronouns, he, she, they, and they were able to see the stressful event as challenging rather than threatening. Finally, ask yourself, “How would I feel about this one week from now or ten years from now?” This form of mental time travel may be effective because our attention is directed away from our immediate, concrete circumstances.
7. What is self-distancing?
A. Getting stuck in negative emotions. B. A stressful situation.
C. A study on relieving emotional stress. D. Reflecting on yourself objectively.
8. Paragraph 2 is developed by____.
A. example B. definition
C. classification D. process
9. Which of the following statement uses the techniques of self-distancing?
A. I’m angry with him.
B. How I wish I could go back to the past!
C. How did these two people get to this point?
D. He grabbed my notes, and then, and then
10. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Why Self-distancing Matters
B. The Application of Self-distancing
C. Breaking the Cycle of Negative Reflection
D. Ways to Reflect on Emotional Reactions
D 8. A 9. C 10. C
根据第一段中的“the ability to take a step back and view yourself more objectively”可知，自我疏远指的是客观地反思自己，故D项正确。
根据第二段中的“Consider a typical “he said/she said” student conflict where they are each focusing on their own feelings.”及“However, if you ask them to take the self-distancing, they might step outside of themselves and ask broader questions: “Why was he so hurt in this situation?” or “How did her anger affect him?””
根据最后一段中的“Besides, avoid using the pronoun “I”. Focus on using third-person pronouns, he, she, they,”可知，避免使用代词“我”，专注于使用第三人称代词他、她或他们，故C项（这两个人是怎么走到这一步的？）
根据第一段中的“When you reflect on your emotional reactions, you sometimes get caught up in cycles of negative feelings, which can make you feel even worse. If so, the answer may lie in a skill called “self-distancing””可知，当你反思自己的情绪反应时，你有时会陷入消极情绪的循环，如果是这样，答案可能是一种叫自我疏远的技巧，由此可知本文介绍的是打破消极循环的技巧——自我疏远，故C项正确。
【点睛】说明文的主旨大意题的难度较大，抓住文章第一段是关键，例如本篇第4题，根据第一段中的“When you reflect on your emotional reactions, you sometimes get caught up in cycles of negative feelings, which can make you feel even worse. If so, the answer may lie in a skill called “self-distancing””可知，当你反思自己的情绪反应时，你有时会陷入消极情绪的循环，如果是这样，答案可能是一种叫自我疏远的技巧，由此可知本文介绍的是打破消极循环的技巧——自我疏远，而不是自我疏远的应用或自我疏远的重要性。
Fun Writing Activities for Struggling Writers
There are dozens of reasons kids struggle with writing. They may have difficulty getting their thoughts down on paper._____11_____Perhaps grammar and language barriers are blocking their progress. Whatever the reason, adding a little fun can be a great way to get the creative juices flowing.
Sometimes writers get stuck because they simply don’t know where to start. For a child you can try things that are geared(合适)toward their interests, like My Favorite Toy, or What I Like to Do in the Summer. Remember, it' s important to support and guide their ideas, not to discourage thoughts or judge them.
Develop a story map
A great activity to help struggling writers is to build a story map. Write down ideas for the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Or put the topic in the middle of the paper and draw lines out like a wheel for who, what where, and why. _____13_____ This is helpful, because it takes stress out of the writing process.
Make writing relevant
Children are more apt to write if they can identify with the purpose of writing. Writing a letter to a friend or relative can better engage a struggling writer. Or maybe your child has some suggestions for books that the library should have. _____14_____ If writing becomes a more meaningful activity to the child, it can help to make it an easier process.
Make writing enjoyable
You could consider making different writing supplies available like colored pens and pencils, notebooks, etc. Or you could provide a word bank of common words for your kid to use and spell. ___15___ Afterwards, reward your child’s good performance. These all set the stage and invite kids to get excited to write.
A. Inspire ideas
B. Develop an interest.
C. Use the map to guide the writing.
D. Make the process into more of a game.
E. Maybe they lack experiences to write about

根据本段小标题及本空前的“Or put the topic in the middle of the paper and draw lines out like a wheel for who, what where, and why.”
根据本空前的“Or maybe your child has some suggestions for books that the library should have.”
根据本段小标题及本空前的“Or you could provide a word bank of common words for your kid to use and spell.”

I always prided myself on being a wise shopper and having a good nose for bargains. So when I came across a sporting goods store with a sign “Going Out of Business Sale”, I marched into the crowded store. Up and down the aisles (通道), I wandered, humming to myself and enjoying the energy and excitement of a sale.
All of a sudden, there, at the back of the store sat acanoe(轻舟) exactly like my husband’s dream Supremo Numero-Uno,whose picture had been stuck on the bathroom mirror for years. My heart beat wildly. I pushed my way through the crowds, and nearly fell into the canoe looking for the price tag. There it was, with the manufacturer’s suggested price at $6,750 plus tax crossed out and a handwritten TO CLEAR $750 AS IS. Must be a mistake. $6000 off? Salesman. I had to talk to a salesman. I spotted a young fellow with a “Hi. I’m Mathew”. “Mathew. Tell me about this El Supremo canoe. What’s wrong with it? Why is it only $750?”
“Oh. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s brand new. We’re closing the store. It’s on clearance like everything else. I’ll go check.” A few minutes later he came back and said, “I’m sorry ma’am. Someone made a mistake on the sale tag. It should be $4,750 for the whole package.”
I felt tears well up in my eyes. “Oh well”, I said sadly. “Of course, it was too good to be true. This is exactly like my husband’s dreamboat. I guess I started to dream myself when I saw that price tag. He’s going to be 62 years old Friday. Had to retire early for his health. It’s been hard on just the pension but the stubborn old fool has been saving $10 every week for years to buy one just like this. I promise I won’t buy anything, but it’s just an old man’s silly dream, you know. Always said he wanted to fish in a canoe after he retired,” my voice lowered and I turned and walked away.
I was already at the mall door when Mathew caught up with me. “Do you have $750 plus $25 for delivery, ma’am?”
“Ma’am. There’s something you should know. This store was my Grandpa’s and the canoe had been ordered by him.
I was already at the mall door when Mathew caught up with me. “Do you have $750 plus $25 for delivery, ma’am?” “Yes. Yes. That's about all I have,” “Well then, you just have your husband sitting at the front gate on Friday morning around 10 o’clock so he can be there when my Dad and I come to unload his new canoe. We’ll even put a bow on it for his birthday.” I started to cry. My old hand shook as I wrote out my cheque.
“Ma’am. There’s something you should know. This store was my Grandpa’s and the canoe had been ordered by him. He always promised to retire one day. Said he wanted to spend time relaxing and out fishing in a canoe.” He swallowed hard. “My Grandpa died, sudden-like, just last week. He was only 68 years old. I think he’d be mighty happy that your husband will get this canoe. You just have to make sure he uses it a lot, okay? Promise?” “I promise,” I said as I dashed off to look for my dear sweet husband.
