Curage is a huge theme in my life, a quality I cnstantly seek, appreciate, and analyze. The rt f“curage”is “cr,” the Latin wrd fr heart. Originally, curage meant“t speak ne’s mind by telling all ne's heart.”While curage is ften assciated with herism nwadays, I believe true curage lies in being pen and hnest abut wh we are and hw we feel.
I recently witnessed an example f true curage. During a muntain-climbing trip with my15-year-ld daughter and sme cllege students, I nticed her struggling t keep up with the grup. Despite my suggestins t rest, she persisted until she culdn't breathe prperly.
Panicked, I called ut t the frnt fr help, but there was n respnse, and we had n cellphne signal. Frtunately, tw students just came back t check ut n us. They ffered assistance and calmed us dwn. As we cntinued at a slwer pace, they shared their wn experiences, frm starting ut as beginners like my daughter t becming cnsistently amng the first t reach the peak.
“Yu knw,” ne f them said, lking at my daughter,“I was just like yu when I started. But with practice and prper pace, yu'll get there t.”
“Yeah, dn't let yur lack f experience stp yu,” the ther added. “It's kay t admit when yu're struggling r nt feeling alright. In fact, it's imprtant t speak up and ask fr help when yu need it. That's hw we imprve and grw.”
Reaching the muntain tp was a huge relief fr bth my daughter and me. Hwever, the tw students addressed the celebrating grup directly, emphasizing the imprtance f staying tgether in tugh envirnments. Their wrds led the grup t aplgize t us fr verlking ur struggle.
I was ttally amazed at their bravery, and my daughter learned that it's kay t be the least experienced in a grup. Curage, I've cme t realize, has a ripple effect. Each time we chse curage, we inspire thse arund us t be a little brave r and make the wrld a little better.
    24. Why des the authr mentin the riginal meaning f curage?
    A. T argue fr the true essence f curage.B. T questin the cmmn belief f curage.
    C. T shw the changing meaning f curage.D. T cmpare different interpretatins f curage.
    25. What did the tw students suggest the daughter d?
    A. Challenge her wn limits. B. Seek help whenever pssible.
    C. Keep t a suitable pace. D. Stick with experienced climbers.
    26. Which actin in the muntain-climbing stry is an example f true curage?
    A. The mther asked the girl t rest.B. The girl tried hard nt t fall behind.
    C. The grup celebrated the reach f the tp.D. The tw students pinted ut the grup's fault.
    27. What des the authr intend t tell us?
    A. Kindness cnnects us all.B. Being a beginner takes curage.
    C. With curage, everyne can be perfect.D. We dn't have t be a her t be brave.

“It's nt unusual fr guests t feel emtinal when they discver the stry behind ur fd,” says Patrick Navis. “Nt t mentin when they taste it. One even cried with happiness.” The setting fr these tearful scenes? Navis's restaurant in a Dutch city. Here, the wner and his team create experimental fd using herbs, rts, flwers and nuts—sme cmmn, thers less s.
Mst f these ingredients(食材) cme frm the Ketelbrek Fd Frest nearby. T the untrained eye, it's like an rdinary wd. But there's ne key difference: everything in it is edible. It was set up in 2009 by Dutch btanist and envirnmentalist Nah Eck as an experiment in slw farming, t see what wuld happen if the right cmbinatin f fd plants were left t grw tgether like a natural frest, withut chemicals.
“It's the first ‘fd frest’ f its kind in Eurpe and we’re ne f the few restaurants arund the wrld cperating in this way,”says Navis.“We have ver 400 different species f edible plants we plan ur menus arund, including sme we previusly knew little abut." He harvests the ingredients and, with his fellw chefs, wrks them int beautifully presented tasting menus, served in a dining rm hidden in the backstreets f the city,
“T us, fine dining is nt abut the fame f a restaurant, its lcatin, expensive decratin, fancy cking and wine list,”says Navis.“It's abut adding value thrugh creativity and using ingredients nbdy knws f, which are grwn with great attentin.”Hwever, he adds, luxury cking can be abut enhancing everyday ingredients, t.
“When lking at cking in this way, wh can argue that caviar(鱼子酱 ), fr example, is mre valuable than a carrt grwn with specialist knwledge?”
Experimentatin is extremely imprtant t Navis. In the next five years, he hpes t pen an utdr restaurant. But fr nw, the mst imprtant thing is t cntinue fcusing n hw plants are being grwn and the perennial system used in the Fd Frest, reducing the need fr replanting each seasn.

    30. What is the key element f fine dining accrding t Navis?
    A. Cnvenient lcatins. B. Expensive ingredients.
    C. Innvative menus. D. Fancy cking techniques.

My father started learning French at 57, drawn by the ptential benefits f bilingualism in delaying dementia (失智症). Nw,20 years later, he's n his third teacher. Many peple like my father have attempted t pick up a new language. But can this really bst brain health?
Accrding t experts, regularly using a new language brings cgnitive(认知的) benefits. If yu're trying t recall the right wrds in anther language, yur brain is frced t inhibit yur mther tngue. This prcess, called cgnitive inhibitin, helps imprve yur brain functin. Repeating this prcess makes yur brain mre resistant t diseases like dementia. The mre yu challenge yur brain, the better it functins, even if yur brain health starts t decline.
Hwever, evidence fr the benefits f learning a secnd language in yur 60s is weaker. Research by Dr. Le Antniu fund that lder Italians wh tk English lessns fr fur mnths didn't see any difference in their cgnitin scres, but peple wh didn't saw their scres decline. Prf. Diana Smith's 2023 studies fund similar results.
Researchers ffered a few ptential explanatins fr their disappinting results. One is that the participants were highly mtivated vlunteers, prbably f high cgnitive level fr their age, making it hard t see any imprvements. “When chsing participants, we have t be careful, are they really representative f the ppulatin?” said Dr. Judith Ware. Anther is that the language interventins were perhaps t shrt. These studies have used language lessns that “were very different in their length and frequency,” said Prf. Laura Grssman.
T Dr. Antniu, the limited findings are nt entirely surprising. N ne wuld say that learning a new language fr six mnths wuld be the same as having used tw languages fr yur entire life. But he des think that language lessns can prvide cgnitive benefits by being cgnitively stimulating.
Perhaps mre imprtant, Prf. Grssman said, learning anther language ffers ther ptential advantages, like traveling r cnnecting with new cmmunities. My father, fr example, has remained pen friends with his first teacher and traveled t France numerus times.
And at 76, he's as sharp as ever.
    32. What happens in the prcess f “cgnitive inhibitin” ?
    A. Memry imprves. B. Native language is held back.
    C. Dementia is cured. D. Brain health wrsens.
    33. Which is a pssible explanatin fr the disappinting research results?
    A. The interventin f the first language.B. The great length f the language curse.
    C. The pr chice f research participants.D. The age difference f the research subjects.
    34. Whse pinin des the authr supprt by mentining his father's experience?
    A. Le Antniu's. B. Diana Smith's. C. Judith Ware's. D. Laura Grssman's.
    35. Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Is it never t late t learn a new language?
    B. Can learning a new language delay dementia?
    C. Why des my father start learning a new language?
    D. Hw des learning a new language benefit aging brain?

The next Mnday , I signed up fr the camp . As I handed in my registratin frm , the initial disappintment I felt gradually gave way t a thrilling sense f anticipatin , fueled by the cuntless pssibilities awaiting me . Thrughut the camp , I immersed myself in interactive wrkshps , eagerly absrbing new techniques and cnnecting with fellw art enthusiasts like me . It turned ut that the strangers I was initially afraid f were already my friends . Frm this experience , I realized that embracing unfamiliarity and cnquering fears can pave the way fr remarkable persnal grwth and pprtunities . The twering pine tree in the Westns ' yard serves as a cnstant reminder that the strngest grwth ften springs frm venturing int the unknwn wrld .
