They've cme up with a type f measurement which will allw them t figure ut what's knwn as the "age distributin fingerprint" f the mineral zircn, which is fund within sand. The researchers believe this culd prvide them with new infrmatin n hw the Earth's surface has changed ver the last few thusand millin years.
Sme minerals, like zircn, have std the test f time, and are thught t carry clues f Earth's histry. By studying the zircn fund in grains f sand frm rivers and rcks, the scientists are able t wrk ut previusly hidden details abut the Earth's past. Lip-reading invlves tracking facial mvements t determine what smene is saying. Many lip-reading devices pint a camera at the user's face. Others rely n sensrs stuck arund the speaker's muth. Neither apprach is suitable fr daily use, says Ruidng Zhang f Crnell University in Ithaca, NY. His team built a new lip-reading tech n a pair f eyeglasses, which uses acustics—sund—t recgnize silent speech. Zhang presented this wrk n April 19, 2023 at the ACM Cnference in Hamburg, Germany.
"Imagine the snar system whales use, " says Zhang. They send a sund int their envirnment and listen fr eches(回声). Frm thse eches, they lcate bjects in their surrundings. "Our apprach is similar, but nt exactly the same," Zhang explains. "We're nt just interested in lcating smething. Instead, we're trying t track mving patterns."
Zhang calls the new tech EchSpeech, cnsisting f tw small speakers under ne lens f a pair f glasses, tw small micrphnes under the ther lens, and a circuit bard attached t ne f the side arms. When EchSpeech is switched n, its speakers play high-pitched sunds. Peple can't hear them. The sund waves mve in every directin. Sme travel arund the user's lips and muth. While speaking, the user's facial mvements change the paths f thse sund waves. That, in turn, changes the ech patterns picked up by the micrphnes. These patterns are sent t the wearer's smartphne ver Bluetth. Using AI, an EchSpeech app then interprets the ech patterns. It matches each pattern t cmmands the smartphne then fllws.
EchSpeech currently recgnizes 31 vice cmmands and recgnizes numbers that are three t six digits lng. Accrding t Zhang, future versins culd recgnize a much larger vcabulary.
