At its centre was the principle(原则) that all the learning materials shuld be child-sized and designed t appeal t all the senses. In additin, each child shuld a s be allwed t mve and act freely, and use their creativity and prblem-slving skills. Teachers tk the rle f guides, supprting the children withut press r cntrl.
Mntessri pened her first Children’s Huse in 1907. When the Fascists(法西斯主义者) first came int pwer in Italy in 1922, they welcmed her mvement at the beginning. But they sn came t ppse the emphasis n the children’s freedm f expressin. Mntessri s values had always been abut human respect and the rights f children and wmen, but the Fascists wanted t use her wrk and her fame
Things reached a breaking pint when the Fascist tried t influence the schls’ educatinal cntent, and in 1934 Mntessri and her sn decided t leave Italy. She didn’t return t her hmeland until 1947, and she cntinued t write abut and develp her methd until her death in 1952, at the age f 81.

Even nw, I have vivid memries f my last day f high schl. In my mind’s eye, I’m cleaning ut my lcker, and then staring at the emptiness fr a few extra beats befre slamming it shut fr the last time. I’m wandering in the halls with my best friend, blissfully ignring the bells ging ff every 50 minutes n schedule because, just tday, we’re allwed t break the rules. I’m sitting n my desk, swinging my feet, and chatting with my English teacher, Mr. Carr, in a way that makes me feel almst grwn up.
It was maybe my favrite day f the whle year. Like the final layer f waterclr, the freedm and lightness I feel seeps (渗透) int the rest f my memries f that day and turns them just a shade rsier.
If the schl year hasn’t yet ended fr yu, cnsider what yu can d t make the ending cunt. Why? Because when it cmes t human memry, nt all mments are created equal. Instead, ur remembered experiences are disprprtinately(不成比例地) influenced by peaks(the best mments as well as the wrst) and endings(the last mments) .Nbel Prizewinner Danny Kahneman, wh discvered this phenmenn, called this the peak-end rule. It suggests that ur judgment f a past experience is largely based n its mst extreme pint and its endpint.
I tk advantage f the peak-end rule years ag, when my girls were yung enugh t want a bedtime stry each night. I remember thinking that whatever truble and stress had ccurred that day, I culd make the last mments cunt. I culd end n a nte f calm and act like the patient mm I hadn’t quite managed t be just hurs befre.
Dn’t mistake all mments as equal insignificance. There’s a reasn why yga classes end with savasana (挺卧式). There’s a reasn we eat dessert last. D rganize endings carefully. As Pete Carrll might say: Finish strng. Last impressins are especially lasting.
    28. What des the underlined wrd in paragraph 1 mean?
    A. Happily.B. Surprisingly.C. Guiltily.D. Curiusly.
    29. Which statement is true abut the peak-end rule?
    A. The last mments matter the mst in ur memries
    B. Peaks in life can be remembered better than endings.
    C. The peaks and ends f experiences are easier t remember.
    D. Our judgment f the past is determined by first impressins.
    30. What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
    A. Why the authr read stries t her kids.
    B. What challenges the authr faced in life.
    C. Hw the authr applied the rule t daily life.
    D. When the authr accmpanied her daughters.
    31. Why are Pete Carrll’s wrds mentined in the last paragraph?
    A. T shw the imprtance f every mment.
    B. T encurage readers t enjy the endings.
    C. T explain why last impressins are lasting.
    D. T prve the peak-end rule can be used in sprts.
    D
Like many peple ver the past few years, I have fund myself turning t audibks as my main means f reading literature. I find it far mre cmfrtable t “read with m years” while my eyes are resting. My cnsumptin f new bks has dubled as a result-but a recent paper makes me wnder if this will cme at the price f my understanding.
The study cmes frm Baz Keysar and Janet Geipel, bth at the University f Chicag, and it draws frm the “duble prcess mdel” f mental prcessing. Accrding t this view, we have tw ways f assessing infrmatin. System 1 is intuitive(直觉的), relying n natural ability and feeling. It is quick, but likely expsed t misinfrmatin. System 2 is analytical invlving the use f lgic reasning. It is men ally demanding. When it is engaged, we think ur way thrugh the material step by step.
Fr decades, psychlgists have designed varius tests t determine which f these tw systems a persn is using. As ne example, cnsider the fllwing questin:Hw many animals f each kind did Mses take n the Ark (方舟) ?If yu answered tw, yu were prbably nly cnsidering the cre f the questin, which is System I thinking. T get t the right answer-zer, yu need t think mre carefully abut the wrding, which wuld allw yu t remember it was Nah wh built the Ark, nt Mses. That is the kind f analytical prcess.
Keysar and Geipe’s brilliant idea was t investigate whether the sensry frm—seeing vs. hearing—f the infrmatin wuld make a difference. They fund that it did: when answer g these kinds f simple questins, participants were mre likely t make errrs when the sentences were spken ut lud, rather than written.
A greater reliance n ur feelings culd be a prblem if we are cnsuming infrmatin that needs lgical study. Fr this reasn, I will return t reading nn-fictin with my eyes rather than my cars. But I wn’t stp listening t nvels. I am quite happy t g with the flw f my mtins while my critical mind takes a break.
    32. What des the authr think f listening t audibks?
    A. It is relaxing.B. It is demanding.
    C. It is time-cnsuming.D. It is ecnmical.
    33. Which f the fllwing best describes System 2 mdel?
    A. Fairly reliable.B. Fully autmatic.
    C. Questin-centered.D. Emtin-invlved.
    34. The authr talked abut the Ark in paragraph 3in rder t .
    A. intrduce a tpicB. draw a cnclusin
    C. present a factD. illustrate a view
    35. What des the authr intend t tell us?
    A. Reading nn-fictin bks benefits B. Listening t bks cmes at a price.
    C. Critical thinking is a must in reading.D. Ways f receiving infrmatin differ.
