PFAS are fund in nnstick pans, water-prf fabrics and fd packaging. They’re called frever chemicals because f their ability t stick arund and nt break dwn. Nw, using a bit f heat and tw relatively cmmn cmpunds, researchers have degraded (降解) the chemical in the lab.
While sme scientists have fund relatively simple ways f breaking dwn select PFAS, mst degradatin methds require harsh prcesses using intense pressure — in sme cases ver 22 mega-pascals — r extremely high temperatures — smetimes upwards f 1,000℃ — t break the chemical bnds.
William Dichtel, frm Nrthwestern University in Evanstn, and his team experimented with tw substances fund in nearly every chemistry lab: sdium hydrxide (氢氧化钠), als knwn as lye, and a slvent (溶剂) called DMSO. The team wrked specifically n a grup f frever chemicals which cntain a large percentage f PFAS.
When the team cmbined chemicals with the lye and DMSO at 120℃ and with n extra pressure needed, the carbxylic acid (羧酸) fell ff the chemicals and became carbn dixide. “What happened next was unexpected, ” Dichtel said. The lss f the acid helped degrade the chemicals int fluride ins (氟离子) and smaller carbn-cntaining prducts, leaving behind n harmful by-prducts.
“It’s a neat methd; it’s different frm thers that have been tried,” says Chris Sales, an envirnmental engineer at Drexel University in Philadelphia wh was nt invlved in the study. “The biggest questin is hw this culd be adapted and scaled up. Understanding this mechanism is just ne step in unding frever chemicals,” Sales said.
This prcess wuldn’t wrk t deal with PFAS in the envirnment, because it requires a cncentrated amunt f the chemicals, but it culd ne day be used in wastewater treatment plants, where the pllutants culd be filtered ut f the water, cncentrated and then brken dwn.

In 2014, Bine Kramberger at the Institute fr the PCHS fund a mini ceramic bttle at an ancient site nce ccupied by peple f the Lasinja culture in arund 4350 B. C. S far, mre than 100 similar bttles have been fund.
Their purpse was unknwn, but it is thught that sme might have been children’s tys. Curiusly, mst f them have hles in their tiny handles r edges that archaelgists think peple threaded string thrugh, enabling them t be wrn arund the neck r waist. But Kramberger’s find was distinct because it cntained a slid white substance. “It was clear that it had valuable infrmatin because in such ld archaelgical sites, we rarely find cntainers that still keep remains f their frmer cntent,” he says.
Lng and thin stne tls were fund near the bttle, which culd have been used t extract the substance within. Nw, Kramberger and his clleagues have analysed the substance in the bttle and examined 13 thers frm the same perid.
The mystery material cntained a white lead mineral called cerussite, while different lead minerals were identified in tw ther bttles. The three lead-cntaining bttles als had cntents cming frm beeswax(蜂蜡) inside.
“The bttles’ cntents culd have been used fr painting,” says Kramberger. But he says it is mre likely that they were csmetics, because they cntained cmmn ingredients fr such prducts knwn frm later cultures. PFAS are fund in nnstick pans, water-prf fabrics and fd packaging. They’re called frever chemicals because f their ability t stick arund and nt break dwn. Nw, using a bit f heat and tw relatively cmmn cmpunds, researchers have degraded (降解) the chemical in the lab.
While sme scientists have fund relatively simple ways f breaking dwn select PFAS, mst degradatin methds require harsh prcesses using intense pressure — in sme cases ver 22 mega-pascals — r extremely high temperatures — smetimes upwards f 1,000℃ — t break the chemical bnds.
William Dichtel, frm Nrthwestern University in Evanstn, and his team experimented with tw substances fund in nearly every chemistry lab: sdium hydrxide (氢氧化钠), als knwn as lye, and a slvent (溶剂) called DMSO. The team wrked specifically n a grup f frever chemicals which cntain a large percentage f PFAS.
When the team cmbined chemicals with the lye and DMSO at 120℃ and with n extra pressure needed, the carbxylic acid (羧酸) fell ff the chemicals and became carbn dixide. “What happened next was unexpected, ” Dichtel said. The lss f the acid helped degrade the chemicals int fluride ins (氟离子) and smaller carbn-cntaining prducts, leaving behind n harmful by-prducts.
“It’s a neat methd; it’s different frm thers that have been tried,” says Chris Sales, an envirnmental engineer at Drexel University in Philadelphia wh was nt invlved in the study. “The biggest questin is hw this culd be adapted and scaled up. Understanding this mechanism is just ne step in unding frever chemicals,” Sales said.

But Kramberger’s find was distinct because it cntained a slid white substance. “It was clear that it had valuable infrmatin because in such ld archaelgical sites, we rarely find cntainers that still keep remains f their frmer cntent,” he says.

I had just learned English, and frm what little I culd gather frm my friends, Santa Claus wuld cme dwn ne’s chimney and put tys in ne’s stcking n Christmas Eve! What a great cuntry, I thught. After I lked up “stcking” in my Chinese-English dictinary, I knew what I had t d and always expected that day.
Finally, the big day came. On that wnderful night, after everyne went t bed, I sneaked ut f bed, tk my lngest, cleanest knee sck and attached it t a nail already n the mantel (壁炉). Obviusly, the previus wners f this huse were n strangers t this Santa character. Gazing at the sck and imagining the delicately-packed gift in it, I culdn’t help giggling (咯咯笑).
