It was a ht July day in Philadelphia. The five bys I was with had been sick f playing marbles and burning hles in dry leaves. I lnged t be brave and active, like them, but I’d been a sickly child mst f my eight years and I actually wasn’t as strng as the ther bys.
“Cme n!”Called Jerry, my best friend. “Just being sick is n reasn t be a cward(胆小鬼).” “I’m cming!” I yelled, and ran alng after them. Thrugh the park and int the wds we went, finally we std beneath the near vertical(垂直的)wall f the cliff, abut 60 feet high. T me it lked like the very symbl f the Frbidden and Impssible.
One by ne, the ther bys climbed upward, finding handhlds and tehlds n rcks. I hung back until the thers were partway up; then trembling and sweating, I began t climb. A hand here, a ft there, my heart punding in my skinny chest, I made my way up and up. At sme pint, I lked back and was hrrified. The grund at the base f the cliff seemed very far belw; ne slip and I wuld fall. But the bys were talking ludly and happily abve me. In a few minutes they started up t the tp while I still struggled and crawled, far behind.
“Hey, wait,” I begged. Sadly, they ignred my request and cntinued their way t the tp, frm where they wuld walk hme by an easier rute. Befre they left, they glanced dwn at me. “Yu can stay if yu want t”, teased Ned. Jerry lked cncerned, but he went with the thers.
I lked dwn and was vercme by dizziness; a nameless frce seemed t be dragging me t fall ff. I grasped the rck as the wrld spun arund. I culd never climb back dwn. It was much t far t g, t dangerus.

That’s when he saw tw wmen and a girl helpless and heartbrken n their drway.
“The baby’s in there!” ne f the wmen cried. Thugh the fire department had been called, Michael, then 64, immediately ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-ld Tiara, the wman’s granddaughter and a playmate f Michael’s three yungest kids.
Entering the burning huse was like “running int a bucket f black paint”. The thick smke caused Michael t stumble blindly arund, burned his eyes, and made it impssible t breathe. The cnditins wuld have been dangerus fr anyne, but fr Michael, wh has severe lung disease, they were life-threatening.
After a few minutes in the smke-filled huse, he retreated utside t catch his breath. “Where is Tiara?” he asked desperately.
“The secnd flr,” her aunt shuted back.
Michael knew he culdn’t hld his breath fr lng. Hwever, taking a deep breath, he went in a secnd time. The darkness was verwhelming. Yet because the huse had a similar design t his, he made it t the secnd flr. He turned t the right and was met by intense heat. He was already ut f breath.
    “Baby girl, where are yu?”
His thrat and lungs burned as if he’d inhaled fire instead f the smke in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he culd hear was the crackling and ppping f burning wd. Then a sft but distinct man emerged. Still unable t see, Michael fell t his knees n the ht wd flr. He crawled tward the sund, feeling arund fr any sign f the girl. After what seemed ages,it gave up,turned arund, and disappeared int the wds, With his heart still in his thrat. Clin hugged his life-saver and thanked him again and again. Perhaps, he wuld never frget the life-risking experience fr the rest f his life.
    练习(二)
Hwever the way up t the tp was even wrse—higher, steeper, mre challenging. I wuld never make it. I heard smene sbbing and maning; I wndered wh it was and realized that it was I. The ther bys must have been hme. Time dragged. And with each passing minute, my legs and arms grew sre/numb. Smething rlled dwn my cheeks. It was tears r sweat, r bth. The shadws gradually lengthened, the sun disappeared frm the treetps beynd the clearing belw, and dusk began t gather. The grund belw the cliff became dim. Can yu imagine hw desperate I was at that time?
I didn’t knw hw lng it had passed until a familiar vice came belw. I glanced dwn! It was my dad with a flashlight. But what culd he d? It was impssible fr him t climb up here and carry me dwn. “Cme n dwn, my brave by. Dinner is ready.” His cmfrting tne seemed t have a magic pwer. Smehw, fllwing his light, I struggled t inch ver ne step. And then anther. That’s hw it went. Finally I tk the last step dwn nt the bttm and int my father’s strng arms, sbbing a little, and then, surprisingly, feeling a sense f immense accmplishment and smething like pride.

Michael spent ver a week in the hspital. Tiara was released frm the hspital after a few days. The fire sickened Michael’s lung disease, and he feels the effects even tw years later. “It’s a small price t pay,” he always replies. “I’d d it again in a heartbeat. Wuldn’t give it a secnd thught.”
